Chapter 1 - I'm just a side character

Reading books is the most enjoyable way to spend my time. I learn new things everyday about politics, history, science, and even how to cook! No matter what type of book it is, there is no way I'm going to miss out on it.

My love for reading goes beyond this world which is probably why I'm living the life of "Jeanette Don Ve Anasia"

Yeah, I know it's a long name, but thanks to the character's platinum blonde hair, they call me "Vanilla"

It's not a problem for me to have the chance to live again after dying so unexpectedly in my previous life, but to think I was reincarnated as a character that I read from a book, this is crazy! Not to mention, she's a freaking side character who serves as a villain to make the self-esteem of the protagonist go down!

If I remember correctly, Vanilla only appeared a few pages in the book. She was titled as the most beautiful woman in the empire, but her jealousy for the protagonist led to her death.

Let's start this over. First of all, I'm currently in a novel titled as "The Love Story of Margaret Kadinsky" it is about a sweet and innocent lady who enters the cruel world of high society and encounters three men that will attempt to steal her heart. Three handsome men with their own unique personality, but they do share one thing in common and that is their crazy love for the protagonist.

I don't exactly know what happened since I didn't finish the story. In fact, for a simple plot such as this novel, it sure has a lot of pages. I wish I had finished the novel before I died, so I could at least know what will happen in the future. Unfortunately, god seems to enjoy seeing mortals like me suffer.

In order to avoid my death, I tried to change the course of this story by making the male protagonist fall for me or maybe become friends, but no matter how long I search I cannot seem to find or encounter them. Therefore, I simply gave up and allowed things to flow naturally. If fate is so against me from meeting the men, then I can just refrain from bullying the protagonist and hide this beauty of Vanilla, so that way, I can live my life peacefully in this world.

Yup, I should do that.

Eventually, a year passed in a blink of an eye and an invitation letter was sent out to every eighteen year old girl to join the coming-of-age party. If my memory serves me well, this is the beginning of the story where Margaret, the female lead, meets the first and second love candidate for the first time, which would be the prince of the empire and the infamous knight of the red army.

The prince, son of the emperor, was favored due to his political knowledge and amazing way to deal with problems, even during the toughest situations. Before he reached the age of eighteen, the prince was the one who handled the prevention of drought.

Meanwhile, the knight is the eldest son of a duke family, so he too, has a respectable background. It's only to be expected of the male leads, everything about them is perfect.

"Come on my lady! Close your eyes or you will be late for the evening party!" my personal maid, Sasha, tried her best to make me shine, but I insisted on not to. Besides, I'm just a side character. I've given up long ago when the book forbade me to make the love candidates fall for me.

Sasha and I argued about the dress, but in the end, I convinced her to give me something relaxing yet glamourous enough that doesn't attract too much attention. In exchange, she wanted to do a full face make up. Of course, I allowed her but I took it all off during my ride to the party.

However, when I arrived at the event, many beautiful ladies at my age elegantly conversed with each other, trying to improve political relations. I guess in this kind of world, our dresses acts as an armor. I can already hear other nobles gossiping about others.

"This place really makes you feel like you're in a Cinderella story, except, I'm probably playing as one of the step sisters" I tell myself, making my way towards the table filled with food. Seeing as people preffered to chat more than eat, it was almost as if the food served only acted as a decoration. Are these people okay? Can't they at least taste the food?

I grabbed a plate and took plentiful of food, enough to fill my stomach for the night, then I quietly strolled around the ballroom, examining the people. Then, a man possesing such a bright blonde hair made his way down the grand stairs, wearing a white suit befitting for a prince, "Ah. He must me the first love candidate, John," I mumbled to myself.

Suddenly, a petite girl bumped into the prince by accident, "Ah! I'm so sorry, your highness!" Margaret falls on the floor dramatically and bows her head multiple times.

Looking at her closely, she's adorably small and she's oozing that pure aura around her. I can see why the love candidates fell for her, "Watch where you're going next time," John glared at Margaret, but she wasn't aware of the animosity he was emitting considering how dense the author made the protagonist, thus the prince smirked by her indifferent reaction and grew interested at her.

Just seeing such a weird scene straight from the book made me cringe, so I went out to breath some fresh air, "It's extremely cold out here, my lady" Margaret appeared out of nowhere, talking to me.

She's done flirting with the prince already?! I swear, it's like the scene just switched over, as if everything else that happened in there was of irrelevance.

Wait... Come to think of it, this is where Keith, the captain of the red knight army, will meet Margaret for the first time. OH NO! I don't want to get mixed up in their cringe scenes, I need to hurry and escape.

"It's cold out here, my lady," the man with red hair and golden eyes appeared as he takes off his coat and places them over Margaret. It's weird that he repeated what she just said to me.

Well, this dude is a flirt, even in the book. According to what the novel had said, this man standing before me is the biggest flirt in the entire nation, after the prince, but at the same time he's quite scary and that red hair of his compliments that fact, but even so, I can't deny his good looks.

"Would you like to take this chance to dance with me, lovely fairy of the night?" Keith held out his hand while I stare at them in disbelief.

I mean really? am I nonexistent to you guys? I'm right here, hello?

Seriously, is this how side characters are being ignored? It's pitiful. Well, at least I don't hold any sort of feelings for any of them or else I would be hopeless.

Since they were ignoring my presence, I left the balcony even though I was there first. I mean, did that scene really have to occur to where I was? There's like, eight other balcony and they want to do it where I'M at?

I ate a few more plates while perfectly concealing my presence to other nobles and left the party earlier than usual. Besides, there's no reason for me to be here.

I'm just a side character.
