Jason's hand lingers near my cheek for a moment longer before he drops it to his side, stepping back like he knows he's dangerously close to tipping me over some invisible line.
I don't move.
Neither of us does.
The silence stretches, not awkward, not tense, just heavy. Weighted with everything we almost said and everything we did.
Finally, he sighs, dragging a hand through his hair again. "Okay," he says softly, like he's anchoring himself with that one word. "I'll give you space."
I nod, grateful and disappointed at the same time. "Thank you."
He turns to leave, but then pauses in the doorway like he wants to say something else. I can feel it, thick in the air. But instead, he just glances back at me over his shoulder with something like longing in his eyes.
"I'll be in my room… if you need me."
Then he disappears.
