I paused in the kitchen doorway, glancing back at Jason. "I'll stay and look after Jennifer. She needs someone right now."
He shook his head gently, a hint of concern in his eyes. "Marie, you need to be taking care of yourself too."
I wanted to argue, but before I could, the new girl spoke up quietly from the bunk. "I can help,I don't mind."
Jason and I both turned toward her, surprised by the sudden offer.
"Oh, um… my name's Karla Davidson," she said, cheeks coloring slightly. "I'll be Jennifer's roommate. And, well, I don't mind looking after both of you."
Her small smile was sincere, warm in a way that made the room feel less tense.
Jason looked back at me, his voice soft but firm. "If you need anything, call me right away."
I nodded, feeling the weight of the moment—appreciation, uncertainty, and maybe a little relief.
He turned to leave, then paused at the doorway and glanced back with a small, reassuring smile.
