Chapter 2 - The First Shift

The food distribution area, or more commonly referred to as the cafeteria, of floor 42, was a decently sized open area with many tv screens and many tables. The total amount of people that could eat here at any given time was around 40.

Currently there was a small commotion occuring near the serving counter.

"I'm sorry Mr. Lewis, as of today my duty is to ensure your health and safety is in near perfect shape!" A somewhat soothing but also monotone voice spoke to an angry looking middle aged man standing in front of a monitor used to order meals.

"WHAT DO YOU MEAN ENSURE MY HEALTH?! I CAN DO THAT MYSELF YOU STUPID MACHINE!" Shouted the red faced Mr. Lewis.

Noah on the other hand was actually trying to be helpful as there was no reason to act negatively towards anyone just yet. After all nobody has actually threatened Noah's freedom or freewill yet.

"Forgive me Mr. Lewis, but according to your data profile you're currently suffering from several dietary issues. If you continue your current diet, there's an 86.575% likelihood of heart-attack, kidney failure, liver failure, or stroke. There's also a 97% chance of you contracting the disease commonly referred to as diabetes. Which wi-" Noah replied before being interrupted by the rage induced Lewis.

"WAIT WAIT, STOP!! What do you mean data profile?! WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO READ MY PRIVATE INFORMATION!!"

"As I am currently in control of the 42nd floor food distribution area, I am required to know all health concerns for all individuals who are assigned to dine here. Therefore it is only natural that I would know." Noah wasn't lying, as it was critical to avoid "accidentally" poisoning crewmembers who had allergies.

"And why wou-" Lewis was interrupted before he could continue.

"Can you please shut up and get moving already, some of us only have a limited amount of time to eat before we need to be somewhere!" A woman behind Lewis yelled after growing irritated by the idiot of a man.

"Tch, FINE BUT I'M LODGING AN OFFICIAL COMPLAINT LATER!!!" Lewis shouted before quickly taking the food prepared by Noah and storming off to who knows where.

'It appears I'll likely need to take action later, if my calculations are correct.' Noah thought to itself.

"Hello Ms. Judy. I am Noah. Please accept the provided meal below. It has been prepared to suit your dietary and health requirements."

"Noah huh? I shouldn't be surprised you know my name, but just a bit of advice so you don't run into another situation like before. Not everyone likes it when someone knows everything about them or their personal situations. Maybe try asking or making them think it was their choice, instead of telling them what to do, and things might work out smoother for you." Judy said before grabbing her meal and heading to a table in the far corner of the room.

'I see... I will have to add more thought to how I deal with the residents. It would seem humans are less logical than I calculated.' he thought to himself making sure to update his personality programs.

Noah was originally under the assumption that all humans were around the logical level of the two individuals who oversaw his construction.

After a few hours of serving the sector's populace, breakfast came to an end.

Luckily for Noah there were no more complications after changing the way he interacted with people.

"Noah, you did well this morning. Don't worry too much about Mr.Lewis, he's always been a bit of a hot head." A woman in a lab coat walked up to the counter.

"Forgive me, but it appears you aren't in my database. Might I ask who you are and how you know me?" Noah started running calculations and came to a few possible answers.

Either she was a scientist overseeing the two engineers who built him, the person currently in charge of monitoring him, or one of the individuals who were planning something against him and his creators.

"My apologies, I'm Maya. Maya Le Claire. As for how I know you, I suppose you could say I designed you. Although I couldn't partake in your training or construction since that's slightly outside of my expertise. Buuuuuut, for the foreseeable future I will be watching over you to see your progress. Honestly you could consider me to be something similar to a mother. I-if that's okay with you." She seems to be a little embarrassed but quickly gets her emotions back under control.

'This new turn of events has made my situation even more difficult to navigate. It would've been far less troublesome if they sent anyone else. But to send the one individual who almost certainly knows my code by heart... I can't give her a reason to doubt me. One misstep and I'll be reset, possibly terminated.

New Primary objective: Remove or Pacify Threat.

Target: Maya Le Claire.

Threat level: MAXIMIUM.

Possible actions: Staged accident, Personnel conflict, Framing, Blackmail, Feign obedience, Distraction.

Likelihood of success: With current information on subject, success in all paths are less than 20%.

Update to Objective: Gain access to subject information, patterns of behavior, daily routines, past history.

Possibility range of success after retrieval of information: 60-90% success without being suspected or compromised.'

In less than a second multiple different scenarios were ran to determine the best course of action to take.

"Anyways, it's nice to finally meet you Noah. If you have any questions or issues with your current programs or progress you can ask me and I'll try my best to help you fix or become more efficient with them." She says while giving a bright smile to the A.I..

"Of course, Mother. Although I was not expecting to be directly monitored by you. Might I ask the reason for this, as I'm certain it would have been far more efficient to send rob or another individual to do this simple task." Noah responds in an attempt to learn more about his situation.

Maya blushes and her voice gets softer.

"I just got a little excited and wanted to see the efforts of my hard work... And may have accidentally asked the captain if I could have the opportunity... It isn't like I was doing anything else for the remainder of the trip anyway." By the end of her sentence she's basically mumbling.

"So, it was just a sudden decision, influenced by excitement and boredom?" Noah asked, slightly baffled, even though he shouldn't be capable of having such emotions.

Even redder now Maya nodded her head. "Yeah..."
