Chapter 13 - Emotional Stakes

Kay sat on her bed, legs crossed, staring blankly at the mirror. Her reflection smirked back like a stranger. She had already told Miss Dora that her parents supported her decision, that they were completely on board with her marrying David.

But the truth?

She hadn't even told them yet.

Another lie added to the pile, she thought bitterly, chewing her lip. But what else could I do? Sympathy always works. And Miss Dora... she's soft. Soft people are easy to twist.

But even as she comforted herself with that thought, unease gnawed at her. Her parents—Mr. and Mrs. Micawber—were anything but what she had painted them to be. They were kind, honest, upright villagers with deeply rooted values. The kind of people who still said prayers before meals and helped neighbors without expecting anything in return.

And she had dragged their names into her web of deceit.

Worse—she had dumped her son, Kevin, on them like a chore.

They were the only ones who knew her real story—the one she made sure no one in David's world ever heard.

Because if Miss Dora or David ever came to know the truth… it would be over.

Kay's lies had levels. And one of the biggest ones was her first marriage.

She had told everyone her ex-husband was a monster. A psycho who beat her. A man who had tormented her and harassed her into near madness.

But the truth? The truth was far more inconvenient.

Flashback – 7 years ago

He was her cousin. Stefan. A decent, soft-spoken man with kind eyes and an ambitious heart. He came to the village from the city in search of a job. The Micawbers gave him shelter—her parents believed in helping family, even if they barely had enough for themselves.

Stefan wasn't wealthy. Not even close. He worked long hours, accepting whatever job came his way. But he was determined. That quiet kind of man who let his actions speak.

And in between all that hardship… he fell in love with Kay.

But she? She barely noticed him. She found him dull. Poor. Pathetic. His love was invisible to her—until he started rising.

Six months of hard work and Stefan landed a decent job. Not long after, he began investing. Little by little, his savings turned into returns. His small business began to grow. And with it—Kay's interest.

Suddenly, her coldness melted into sweet smiles. Her rudeness transformed into charm.

Stefan, blind in love, couldn't see the difference. All he saw was the girl he had always dreamed of… finally falling for him.

And so, he proposed.

She said yes.

The Micawbers, decent people that they were, supported the marriage wholeheartedly. Stefan was like a son to them.

The wedding was simple. But for Stefan, it was perfect. He treated Kay like a queen—fulfilled her every demand, spoiled her senseless. But beneath her smile was a hollow heart, and in her mind, one thing mattered:

Money.

As Stefan's business flourished, Kay's true self emerged. She began treating him like a walking ATM. Her tantrums, her entitlement, her arrogance—none of it stayed hidden behind the charming mask for long.

And Stefan? He endured. He believed that love meant patience.

Until the day she found out she was pregnant.

She stood in the bathroom holding the test in her hand, her face twisted in disgust instead of joy. It wasn't a moment of celebration for her—it was a curse. A trap. A weight she never asked for.

Stefan was over the moon. He was going to be a father. But when he rushed to hug her, she pushed him away.

Weeks passed. Her attitude worsened. She refused to see doctors, skipped meals, stayed out late, and screamed if he asked her to be careful.

He convinced himself it was hormones. Stress. Fear of motherhood.

He forgave her—again.

Nine months later, Kevin was born.

Stefan cried like a child holding his baby boy for the first time. He saw heaven in that child's face. But Kay?

Nothing.

Not even a flicker of love.

She refused to hold him. Complained about the baby's crying. Claimed she was "done being a woman" and wanted her "freedom back."

Then came that night—the night everything fell apart.

Kay throws the milk bottle across the room. The baby cries louder.

Stefan: (rushing in) "Kay! What are you doing?"

Kay: "Don't shout at me!"

Stefan: "I'm not shouting—I'm begging you. What's wrong with you?"

Kay: "What's wrong with me? What's wrong is this baby ruining my life!"

Stefan: "Are you even hearing yourself?!"

Kay: "Yes, loud and clear. I don't want him."

Stefan: (stunned) "What?"

Kay: "You heard me. I never wanted this child. I only agreed because Mom and Dad emotionally blackmailed me into keeping it."

Stefan: "Are you insane?! That's our son!"

Kay: "Your son. Not mine. I don't want this garbage!"

Stefan: (eyes filled with rage and tears) "Kay… don't you dare call my son trash again!"

Kay: "Oh, I just did."

Stefan: "I've done everything for you. I gave up everything. I sacrificed every ounce of my self-respect. And now this?"

Kay: "You did it all for yourself. Not for me. And definitely not for that baby."

Stefan: (voice breaking) "You're heartless."

Kay: "And you're spineless."

Stefan: "You know what? You're not a mother. You're not even human."

Kay: (coldly) "Good. Then you don't need me."

Stefan: "Kay…" (he loses control and slaps her across the face)

Kay: (shocked, whispering) "You hit me?"

Stefan: "I should've left you long ago."

She stormed out.

The next morning, Stefan sent her divorce papers.

The Micawbers were heartbroken, but they didn't defend her. They couldn't. They had seen everything—the lies, the cruelty, the disregard for her own child. They stood silently by Stefan's side when he took Kevin and left.

He moved away. Took a new job. Started a new life—with his son.

And Kay? She stayed behind—bitter, resentful, and exposed.

Now, years later, Kay paced the floor, plotting again. David was her new "target." Another man she didn't love. Another life she wanted only for status.

If anyone finds out about Kevin, or Stefan, or what really happened... it's over.

But secrets have a way of slipping through even the tightest fingers.

And Kay had no idea how fast her past was catching up.
