______________
(3 months and 20 days after Klada Disaster)
[Lynn's POV]
Since the day we left the last city, we have walked for 7 days straight now. Not a really long journey, but still long enough for us to get used to traveling again.
We continued on our way towards the South East, towards our destination, the Republic of Monproximus. It's name is derived from the Bostnian language, which it's name literally translates to 'The Country Besides the Mountains'.
Why? Well, it's the country besides the mountain ranges of the middle of the continent, duh!
There's still about 2 days of walk from here to reach the border or that country, let alone reach a state of the country, that's why we are taking it easy with our journey.
Right now, we are taking a rest beneath a tree right next to the highway by the river. To the opposite side of the large river is none other than the mountains that we are trying to avoid.
We have never once set foot on those mountains at all, and that is because of how much dangerous monsters there is. Eagles, Saber toothed Giant cats, Raptors, Dragons, and even smarter monsters like goblins, springgans, ogres, you name it.
And right now....
"Kyrie... Do you believe in 'Gravity'?"
"Huh?"
While sitting under the shade, Kyrie was watching the scenery, and I wondered about her opinion on a topic. That's why I asked her that.
"So, what's your answer? Do you think 'Gravity' is real?"
"Yeah, silly. How else would we stay on this planet's surface?"
"Why did you know that then?"
" Why you said?... I don't know. It just always existed in this world I guess."
"I see..."
"Well actually there is another reason for my views and beliefs, and I have been meaning to tell you this... Lynn."
"Oh? Let me guess, are you perhaps an envoy of the God of Wisdom?! Maybe even the reincarnation of him?!"
"No way, I'm not that incredible!"
"Well, I'm just kidding. So, what's your secret then?"
"My secret is that... I..." She starts playing with the tail of her twin tails using her finger. She only does this whenever she's nervous, so I reassured her.
"Don't worry, I won't judge."
"...I see... Then I'll at least open up to you.... Ahem!" She cleared out her throat.
"I'm.... I'm actually from another world."
"...Are you sick? Did you catch a cold last night?"
"Hey! I'm serious!" She pouted her cheeks in anger, and that's when I knew she seriously isn't joking.
"R-really?! You are from another world?!"
"Mmn... I was reincarnated here with my full memories intact after I died in an accident back on my old world."
That's a shocking news, that's for sure... But does that mean she is just as old as I am mentally?
"I see... Then your actions and behavior of not seeming like a kid all makes sense now! How old are you in your mental age?"
"...About 30 I think."
"That's actually still really young..."
"Why did you sound disappointed?!" She once again pouted her cheeks in anger.
"Well, haha, I just thought that I may have finally found someone my age."
"Jeez..."
"So, how was your world any different from this world?"
"Very different. There's just a lot in the ways of difference that I don't know how to speak of it...."
"I see... I guess you can explain by starting with what you know about gravity?"
"Okay. Back in my world, mathematics and the analysis of the world's mechanics which we calls 'science' is much more prominent. So far, the maths taught in that Magic School is but a mere child's play back on earth."
"Uh huh."
"Science was far more advanced back in my old world. We made entire theories about gravity, light, momentum, energy, even down to the very core element of things itself, which we call 'atoms'."
"Atoms?... Never heard of it. Maths is already hard enough already, but yours is harder? And then if maths exists does that mean it's used to calculate things like we use maths to calculate magic?"
"Yes. I am not prominent with science, obviously, but most of my magic understanding is based around my understanding of my old world's mechanics. Though shallow in comparison to the best professors and lecturers, my knowledge is already enough to inspire tons of different ways of using magic."
"I see...."
"So, what's the reason you asked me that anyway? About whether I believe in gravity?"
"Well you see, 'gravity' was actually the new research subject that I made a few months ago, back before we were teleported. Gravity is a vagued thing because we don't know what exactly it is. However...."
"However what?"
"...The problem is with Gravity's relation to other things in our world, especially with mana. Every other force and energy in this world are finite and only affects things in the 3 dimensions. For example, wood is finite, coal is finite, and when given time, even things like stone all eventually turns to sand and is thus finite. That can't affect anything else other than in the material world either."
"Correct."
"However, mana and gravity is most likely infinite. we don't know where mana comes from, and we also don't know exactly what is gravity. Gravity can even bend space-time the fourth dimension... and mana can create all sorts of forces, even gravity. Don't you see the connection here?"
"What connection?"
"It might be possible that Mana is a fuel from the fourth dimension of time and space. Your world has no Mana right?"
"Yeah."
"That just proves my theory that mana is an energy source from another world... And that every other worlds which exists farther from the ground zero of the Mana leakage will absorb less amount of Mana.It gets increasingly harder to get mana the more faraway the worlds are, until it eventually becomes zero like your world."
"I... don't understand. "
"That means Mana wasn't able to travel to your world because of its distance from our world."
"Ah, that makes sense."
"Besides, we don't know whether or not the ground zero of this Mana leakage is on our world or not, but my best guess is most likely yes."
"Oh? Why?"
"Because if time and space is the fourth dimension, then that means even if there is a crack in our world which leads to the fourth dimension, we won't be able to see it."
"I see...."
So far we haven't see any place that could possibly be the source of all Mana, so we most likely just physically can't see it, since we can only observe the third dimension, not the fourth."
"Right... What about the crack on the sky in Creimland now?"
"That's what I'm worried about. Baal have used his Chronos Ignis to crack space before, so I'm worried that this crack on the sky now in Creimland might be another crack through space itself...."
"I see... Well, for now we wouldn't be sure even if we worry a lot about it so it's no use right?"
"...Yeah you have a point. Shall we get moving on our journey then?"
"Yeah, let's go."
"Oogrrr!" Lizzie groaned in excitement upon hearing that we finished our long conversation, she must have been bored.
We picked up our baggages and as we are about to continue along the road...
"Lynn, Black Scorpions!" Kyrielle pointed to the sandy hill that is to our right about 30 meters ahead, where about 7 scorpions are rushing towards us.
"Ah, not a lot of them I see."
"Not a lot?! Your idea of 'many' is messed up!"
"Whatever, fuse your spells with mine, use a fire spell and I'll cast a wind spell."
"Right!"
She stretched out her left arm and started to cast a spell. With one crest and another stacked in front of each other to create a double charge effect....
"Incinerate!"
'Bwuom!'
...she shot out a really dangerously concentrated stream of fire. It's Adept ranked at least.
The scorpions immediately evaded to the sides and dodged the hot flames that was coming for them. About 15 meters range now.
Seeing this, I immediately casted a Master ranked wind spell.
Call of Tornado!
A blue crest forms on my out streched right arm. After about a second right as it finished casting; 'Whoosh!'
A tornado about the size of a small hut formed and immediately sucked up all the flames that Kyrie fired. This formed a flaming tornado of heat death....
With my control, the tornado chased after the scorpions who immediately scattered around like ants in reaction... They were all sucked up into the flaming tornado and burned into crisps.
"And... disperse."
I stopped the spell and all the winds and fire immediately disperses into the thin air.
'Clapping!' Kyrielle clapped her hands upon seeing our team work Fused Magic.
"Nice control as always, Lynn."
"Hahaha, I haven't even showed you a fraction of my magic control! But still, your incineration is a force to be reckoned with."
"Your eyes are glowing again, and I am only so good at magic because my Magic control has only gotten better with the teachings of you as well, mentor."
"Haha, I guess that is true as well. Anyway, that was a really nice team magic combo."
"Mmn, that was actually really satisfying to pull off! Anyway, let's get on with our journey shall we?"
"Oogrrr...."
"What's wrong Lizzie, are you scared of that spell? We won't hurt you so don't be afraid. We are only just trying to protect you!"
Kyrielle played mental support to the overgrown lizard and help calm it down before we continued heading to the west...
[Kyrielle's POV]
.....
A Mana Shield.... is a mana barrier that coats your body.... everyone has it naturally.... but it is only strengthened when you push it to the limit....
"....?!"
'Fwuop...!'' A sound of cloth being thrown was made when I jumped out of my sleeping place and threw off my blanket. I was surprised by what my mind had just suddenly thought of without any explanation whatsoever.... What the hell was that?
I looked around and sure enough, it's just as usual with Lynn sleeping next to me and Lizzie curled up and sleeping to the other side.
"....What the..."
Somehow while I was half asleep, my mind suddenly gained the knowledge of a Mana Shield. I suddenly knew how it works, and also how I can use it, almost as if some kind of instinct inside me has awakened in me....
....is that true?
I closed my eyes and focused my Mana Aura onto my arm.... And sure enough as I did so, a near invisible layer of Mana appeared on top of my shirt's sleeve.
"Is this really a Mana Shield?... I want to test it out...." I mumbled to myself subconsciously.
I pulled back my Mana from around the outer layer of my body, and then the Mana Shield disappears. Focusing and putting Mana around your body activates it again, so now I know how to turn it on and off.
"...." I looked at Lynn again, it seems that she is sound asleep. I don't want to wake her up and disrupt her sleep, even though I have questions. I'll just save it for tomorrow then.
I got up from my sleeping place and went for our luggage where I picked up a magic lantern, one that we bought from one of the city we visited. I made lots of ransacking noise as I dug around our luggage, so I tried to be even more quiet to not wake those two up.
I put my hand on the lantern and poured Mana into the magic crest inside, a small fire ignited on the lantern's empty space inside and it burned brightly without heating anything around it.
I really wondered how this is possible sometimes.... I guess enchanting magic is truly special because of how you can modify all sorts of things like this huh?
With the lantern that lights up just a small area around, I walked in the dark night sky towards a giant rock nearby about 20 meters ahead.
'Whoooooo....' The cold night winds of the desert blew between my legs and up my skirt as I walked in this lonely night with a starry sky. This cold breeze made my thighs and my lady hits shivers in cold... Why did I wear a skirt in such a cold weather anyway?!
As I walked towards my destination, I saw a meter long stick right beside my way; the perfect length for a wooden practise stick. Naturally, I picked it up to use for testing my Mana Shield.
I grabbed the stick and then I hit my leg gently with it....
No feelings of pain at all, I'll try to hit harder then... 'Thud!'
A loud sound was made when I smacked my thigh with the wooden stick.... I used about half strength and finally I could feel some small pain, but it's too small amount of a pain for the strength I used....
This means that the Mana Shield actually boosts the toughness of my body, which is a welcomed improvement to protect my squishy-mage-behind like those RPG games....
With the stick in hand I walked to the large rock ahead of me.... How nostalgic it is, hitting a rock with a stick just like my first training section with dad.
"Dad..." I mumbled that once again as I remembered about him.
With my free hand, I gently slapped my face to bring myself back to the present. Then...
"Hoo... Hah...." I took a really deep breath to calm my mind. I always find myself doing this to bring myself back to the present whenever I reminiscences about dad.... It clears my mind and makes me focus more.
I set down the lantern on the ground to my side... The first thing to do is a small physical test.
I swung the stick around a few times without any techniques and without activating my Mana Shield. It's slow and not as strong. Then I activated my Mana Shield and swing it around again....
'Woosh!' (3x)
This time it's way faster and stronger than before I activated my Mana Shield, so it definitely boosts my physical power....
If I use martial art techniques with a Mana Shield does that mean my technique would be amplified even further?
To test this, I gripped the stick with both hands and put the stick in front of my body, pointing the stick at the rock which is just outside of striking distance.
"Hooo.... Haaah...." I closed my eyes and took a deep breath to clear my head....
Opening my eyes, I raised the stick just above my head simultaneously as I raise my leg until it's waist level. Finally readying myself...
"Hmpt!" I groaned as I swung the stick downwards while my raised leg stomps down as hard as possible. After practising for so long, I have finally found the trick to using One Line; the harder you stomp the more powerful you swing because of footwork and physics. For a strike technique, it is much more reliant on footwork.
'Thak!' The stick swung super fast before it hits the rock and snaps in half upon impact.
"...One Line." I got out of my guard position and bowed lightly at the rock.
One Line, a sword technique that I'm no stranger with all thanks to dad, it's also the only sword technique that I knows. This bow is a final salute to him, not as daughter and father, but as apprentice and master.
Thank you for everything, Thomas.... Dad. May you have a better afterlife.
After I got to Bostnia Continent I never got any chance to practise martial arts at all... That's why I feel like trying out more Martial Arts with my current new found ability of a Mana Shield.
I put down the broken stick and then picked up the lantern and got closer to the me-sized rock to inspect it.
Looking at the place where I hit it, there are slight but obvious cracks on the surface.
I... I did it! Though it did not split perfectly in half like when dad did it, I have now successfully cracked a rock with my One Line!
This only show the difference in strength and skill between me and him, as he can easily split this rock in half like he's cutting a piece of bread... I'm leagues behind him. He's a really good swordsman, that's for sure.
Welp, it's time to head back I guess.
After I inspected the damage I did to the rock, I left the place and walked back to the camp. There, I lied down on the warm trench that I dug out for myself, before pulling the blanket over, covering myself in a warm embrace.
It becomes very warm under the blanket and lets you sleep comfortably despite the cold desert night. It retains this warmness even after the bonfire is long extinguished. By the time this trench isn't warm anymore, the sun would've gone up already.
As I lied down in this comfy sleeping trench, my mind starts to wander again....
I suppose that Dad being like a superhuman with his speed and power must be because of this Mana Shield thing huh? How odd...
I heard from Lynn that all living creatures can wear a Mana Shield and gets better at it regardless of their Magic Power... If that is so, then it makes sense why the people if this world seems superhuman compared to the people back on earth, and how warriors can compete with monsters.
The weirdest part is that she told me how there are different characteristics in Mana Shield among different individuals.... People who are good at martial arts generally have much better control over their Mana Shield, and that their Mana Shield also boosts their physical power.
But for people like Lynn who doesn't know martial arts, their Mana Shield doesn't boost their physical power, it only boosts their defense.
I do really wondered what's the catch with Albion as well. Why does he want me to have these abilities...? For now, I wouldn't know so I guess it's useless to speculate huh.
My mind wonders about all sorts of things, but I suddenly thought of something weird.... They say that daughters are the father's past life wife right? I'm not a woman in my past life, so I think this myth is debunked.
Mm... My thoughts are getting slower... I'm feeling sleepy....
"Zzzz..."
