Mr. Xanders' eyes narrowed as he thought about it. Perhaps he was trying to recall if he had seen the right person.
When he spoke again, he said, "Is that so? Then, it must have been someone else related to him."
For some reason, I was so relieved to hear such words.
"Yes, that must be it," I immediately agreed. "Perhaps, one of his cousin's happened to be here."
Deep inside, I couldn't help but admit that Mr. Xanders' words earlier made me nervous.
After all, I was staying in another hotel and I wasn't with my husband.
Further, Tristan is in another country so he couldn't be here unless something happened that changed his schedule.
Or would he have gone here to see me if he heard that I had to meet Mr. Xanders here so suddenly?
Who have I informed that I headed here?
Ah, my secretary.
Tristan could have learned about it if he contacted my secretary.
But instead of canceling his scheduled work, why wouldn't he contact me first if that was the case?
Moreover, Tristan is not the jealous kind. He wouldn't mind me meeting with Mr. Xanders in a hotel since he knows it's simply for work and nothing more.
We trust each other.
Likewise, Mr. Xanders said it was two days ago when he saw my husband.
The most recent change in our meeting place to be here only happened yesterday. I haven't had the chance to inform my husband about it since his phone was out of reach.
Tristan already warned me that they would be going to a far flung area to inspect so I likely won't be able to reach him.
Thus, when I couldn't reach him, I decided to tell him later once he's back.
There's no way for Tristan to be here, unless the inspection was canceled. And there's no way he would not tell me.
"You may leave, Mrs. Brooks. I have matters to attend to," Mr. Xanders dismissed me.
"I-"
I wanted to say more and try to persuade him to sign the proposal now, but he spoke with finality and already rose.
It meant this meeting was over.
I gritted my teeth as his secretary helped him wear a coat.
Mr. Xanders began walking to the door with those huge strides of his.
His secretary slightly bowed his head as a goodbye gesture, picked up a briefcase, and followed Mr. Xanders.
My 30 hours of no sleep was for naught.
He was indeed ready to move out so it must be true there's something else he needed to do. If I try to stop him, he might become furious.
I quickly gathered my things and walked after them.
"Thank you for meeting with me, Mr. Xanders.
I'll do my best to check the proposal and make necessary corrections.
When can I meet you again?" I asked, hoping for another meeting when he had more time.
I'm the one who needed this so I have no choice but to butter up to him. But hopefully, it's as soon as possible.
"Since you flew all the way here, let's meet again tomorrow, Mrs. Brooks," Mr. Xanders said and walked with such huge strides that I was left behind.
The door closed behind him and his secretary.
They left just like that.
Flabbergasted, I was speechless and blinked twice as I was left in his room with one of his assistants.
His assistant looked at me with pity and bowed his head slightly, wordlessly apologizing for his boss' actions.
I heaved a sigh and nodded. I understand that this person had no fault in his boss' actions.
With Mr. Xanders not around, I took the chance to look around the room.
It was neat and tidy as if it was unused. Very characteristic of Mr. Xanders who was a known perfectionist.
What was unexpected though was this was not a presidential suite.
With someone as rich as Mr. Xanders, people would think he would only stay in the best rooms in a hotel.
Yet, this was a regular suite.
It was elegant, wide, and classy as it is so it must be why he did not need to be in the widest and best room. Especially since this is the best hotel in this city.
It was why I did not book here. It was expensive.
Our company would handle my expenses but I did not want to splurge money needlessly.
Tristan and I had agreed to be thrifty with our expenses since we are saving up for our future children.
Thus, even though we have millions in the bank, we do not spend carelessly.
Any comfortable and safe enough hotel was fine with me so I booked one nearby and took a cab here.
The hotel was still pricey though since it was within the city's richest business hub.
I did not want to be late so I could only get one that's not too far. As such, even when the traffic earlier was congested, I was still on time for our meeting.
Yet, I was only able to speak with Mr. Xanders for a few minutes. I flew all the way here too.
The lingering question was what to do now after all the hard work and time we spent for this project proposal.
Mr. Xanders delayed giving his approval again even though the preliminary talks were already done and all we needed was his signature.
Yet, he keeps dragging this out without any real major changes in his comments.
Now, he's talking like this whole project was a farce he could not approve of.
Thankfully though, he agreed to meet again tomorrow.
I glanced at his assistant and decided to ask the question, "Do you think Mr. Xanders has any plans on signing this?"
I'm becoming desperate so I have to resort to this. I needed a clue on what Mr. Xanders have in my mind.
"I'm not sure what Mr. Xanders have in mind either.
However, please know that all the versions you sent were printed and he personally reviewed them.
I believe he is seriously considering it.
He's just very busy at the moment," his assistant replied.
That's a huge relief! At least Mr. Xander's is truly considering it.
"I see. Thank you!"
I beamed at his assistant and finally left Mr. Xander's room as well.
Upon exiting, I glanced at each of the two rooms besides his – wondering which room was the one he said he had seen my husband enter.
"Ah, I forgot to ask his assistant."
But thankfully, I didn't. Because if I did, it would be like doubting my husband.
