Chapter 12 - Not affected

He runs his group really well. I've seen his actions before, but I've never seen him in such a complicated situation. If a continues like this, I could see them giving it their all. But I have to concentrate on myself first. Even if I'm improving, I've struggled to deal with a single spider, and this training was only aimed at my perception and reaction time. I mustn't overestimate myself and take the opportunity to gain experience.

-I think the nest isn't far away. We're getting closer, given the number of spiders being sent.

-They're not only more numerous, they're also tougher.

-What do we do, Rack?

-I really don't know. What do you think, François?

-It's feasible, but it's going to be limited. We won't each get a second chance, so if we go, it'll be with the determination not to die and to win.

So even they can find themselves in trouble near here. The forest is so unsafe even for them.

-Why are there such monsters here?

-What do we know? There are monsters everywhere. We're not going to question their existence today.

The existence of monsters, eh? That could be a pretty interesting subject. I wonder if it's natural for them or... Anyway, I'm not going to get into that today. Huh? Roid...

-Roid look out!!!

-Roid!!!

Something flew past Rack and Roald, hitting Roid in the abdomen. He collapsed from the shock. François was the first to react and ordered everyone to gather around the wounded man.

-The wound isn't that deep. He'll be fine if we get out of here. I didn't expect him to send soldiers this far. The thing that ran into us is super strong, guys, so be careful.

Shit, things are getting out of hand. Looks like we won't be able to take care of the queen. We've got to get out of here, but that huge thing keeps circling us at high speed.

It was the right thing to say. A black shadow was speeding around them. Kayle could hardly see it; it was moving so fast that what little perception he had was useless to him. In a flash, the shadow was in front of him.

-I've got you now.

Rack was the first to react before the shadow hit Kayle. He countered with his sword. The thing was thrown back into the shadows of the forest. Suddenly, a second shadow appeared out of nowhere.

Shit, I can't see them. I'm a burden here. The situation is critical.

-François, any plan?

-No plan. Move in a circle and let's get out of here. If we get out of their territory, we should be fine.

-What's that thing attacking us?

-I don't know what it is. But for some reason...

The two things came at them again, but more exactly....

They attack the weakest.

-They attack the weakest.

-They attack the weakest.

-Very well, we'll take advantage of the situation to give them the coup de grace. As soon as they attack Kayle or François, Roald and me, we'll take them out.

-Ok

-Kayle, I'm counting on your superhuman reflexes to avoid.

-Okay.

-Here comes a third one.

Crap.

The shadows came at Kayle and François at full speed. Jean raised his great axe in the air, but he was too slow. Roald took charge of the monster as it charged towards him.

He was slightly faster and more agile than Rack, which sometimes earned him the nickname of "pale copy", but no one questioned his strength because no one questioned Rack's. He easily countered the monster, but he was too slow.

He easily countered the monster, but a second pointed in his direction. He was hit head-on.

-Roald.

-I'll be all right. Hein...

;

Roald noticed purple spots on his arm, which had been hit.

-Crap.

He looked at Roid's condition and saw the same spots, much larger and darker.

-Venom.

-I know, Roald. I noticed it too. But for now, keep calm and let's move on. We've got to get out of here as soon as possible.

'Rack managed to slice through the monster in front of him. What speed. But what are these things... They have a humanoid shape.'

-Damn. Did you see that, François?

-I can see it.

-Eight arms and excellent speed. We're in trouble.

-Let's keep moving.

'Shit, Rack got venom on his body. I got some too. But hey.... stains don't do anything to me.... ...I have an idea.'

-He's out of it. That's something.

The two remaining monsters were still projecting at high speed. Roald was able to get his with difficulty, but when Rack was about to slice the last one, a fourth showed up with him.

-Shit, where was that one hiding?

-Rack, be careful!

'If I can't get them because of their speed.'

-Kayle, what are you doing?

'I'm going to play their own game.'

Kayle stepped in front of Rack, who was terribly surprised. The monster lunged at him and bit his left shoulder, nearly tearing it off. However...

'I've got to react first.'

Kayle grabbed one of the creature's legs by reflex, trying to catch it.

-I've got you now.

In one swift movement, he severed its head as it tried to escape his grip. Kayle's blood, as well as that of the monster, spilled onto the floor. Rack sliced the second in half in mid-air.

-Kayle, are you crazy?

-Yeah, but I got it.

Rack looked worriedly at Kayle. But they didn't have time to waste on this.

-We don't have time to hang around here. Let's make the most of it while they're gone and get out of here.

...

The group left the forest in a hurry. The wounded were given emergency treatment. However, Kayle was not out of surprises. The village had antidotes against this type of spider. As if it wasn't the first time. For him, however, it was useless, as he wasn't affected by the poison. But even so, his shoulder almost came off. Fighting a sudden fainting spell, he couldn't keep awake.
