"Why am I doing this?" Captain Hunter mumbled quietly under his breath.
He pressed the alert for Love's door alarm after a long moment of hesitation.
From an early age, Kit Hunter had learned how to pull his mind away from dark thoughts and difficult memories. Pushing them down and focusing instead on the moment right in front of him. The feel of his breath pulling in and out of his lungs, the movement of his body as he let his hand drop back to his side, and the muscles in his face when he forced his lips up into a friendly smile.
But all the while, his mother's revelation about both his real father and the reason behind her intense loathing for him continued to invade his mind like a poison. It was as though a heavy weight were pressing down on his chest, pushing acid through his veins.
And then there had been the odd interaction with the young man with those sad, ocean blue eyes.
