Chapter 42 - Show, don't tell

After collecting his equipment, Wilhelm directly went outside the boundary of the Capital where the barrier ended. As he touched the ground outside the barrier, Wilhelm willed the Spatial Magic around him to teleport from his present spot and instantly appeared inside the room at the base.

Landing there, he placed the suitcase by the side, but his eyes were a bit dark as he looked at his reflection in the mirror.

'Never doing that again.'

'Hehehe! Look at him! *CLICK*'

A memory passed his mind, but trying to shake it off, he focused on the item in front of him and opened the last suitcase that Kraven had not gotten the chance to open.

*CLICK*

With the sound of a snap latch opening with a click, the suitcase gave way to the contents inside it.

Namely, multiple pairs of clothes that looked completely identical to what Wilhelm wore the day he met Crescent, with slight variation, and a necklace.

Several belts had several pouches on them as well.

Inside the suitcase, there was also a slip of paper, just like every suitcase before had that contained a description of the items.

Taking the slip in his hands, he read what was written on it.

'Clothes

Mana resistance.

Fire resistance.

Electricity resistance.

Waterproof.

Temperature regulation.

Tear resistance.

Self-adjustment.

Cloth regeneration.

Necklace

Mana regeneration.

Convert a small amount of mana from an attack to heal.

Extra mana when mana reaches zero.

Mana barrier when the user becomes unconscious.

Damage reduction.

Belt

Contains pouches with spatial expansion.

Pouches can hold perishable food up to 2 months.'

Reading the functions of the item in front of him, Wilhelm placed the paper back inside the suitcase and picked up the clothes themselves. Changing into his new set of clothes, Wilhelm waited for the clothes that were a bit loose to fit him, which they quickly did.

"This is…a nice fit." Wilhelm muttered as he felt the nice and comfortable fabric on his body. Moving his arms slowly, examining the clothes, Wilhelm turned to the other items in the suitcase. Namely, the necklace and the belt.

Wilhelm took the necklace and, giving a side eye to its engravings, wore it around his neck. Immediately, Willhelm felt the rate at which he recovered mana, seeing a noticeable hike.

'Ahh…that is nice. Maybe I can ask more of these to be made so I won't run out of mana, but there has to be an upper ceiling to them for sure.' Wilhem thought, as he took a look at the belt, before he decided to wear armor instead.

Quickly and efficiently, he equipped everything.

*SHING*

With a shing, he sheathed his final sword in its scabbard. He could barely feel the weight in them due to the nature of the enchantments used in them, and that is why he did not feel strain despite having multiple weapons. But still so as not to hamper his mobility, he decided to keep the swords, except the Zweihänder strapped on his back and the saber by his waist in the pouches. Javelins too, along with musket and revolver in the pouches. Other pouches contained several types of bullets that he had in his possession.

After everything was over, he walked up to the mirror and gave himself a once-over. Unlike his previous armor, this one looked pitch black, with gauntlets and all. With a slight flare of his mana, he made the armor disappear from sight, giving way to his clothes, that too were a shade of black.

Observing a while, he muttered.

"Well, I guess it is time to train and experiment."

Following his words, he conjured a portal that swallowed him whole, leaving behind a stillness to his once lively room.

On the other side, Wilhelm found himself in an environment completely different from his usual one. This land bore a scarce amount of flora. As far as eyes went, rocks and boulders were there. Not sand, but rocks.

'This place that I discovered when tailing Purple Orca when Julius told me to is perfect to train. The closest civilization is many hours away. The only people who use this path are those with less than stellar intentions in mind.'

Wilhelm thought as he tapped the land with his foot, that caused it to deform, and a stool made of rocks to shape. Sitting on it, Wilhelm gazed up at the clouds in a contemplative manner, thinking of various uses of the magic that he had, and maybe develop them to the extreme with his knowledge on them, just like he had done with Beast Magic.

He raised his hand that disappeared into a portal, and when he brought it back, it had a notebook in his hand along with his fountain pen. Creating a desk using World Tree Magic, Wilhelm began.

'First, I need to classify the uses I can have for the magic by itself and in combination with others.

Let's begin with Glass Magic.

I have had it since the beginning, along with Aroma Magic. I had used it to its perfection, but due to the new additions, it gives me opportunities to achieve more.

First, a dome fitted with glass all around. Using it, not only does it make creating illusions easier, but I can also incorporate light as well, and can reflect it until I hit my target.

That is the only use I have for it at the top of my head by itself.'

Then, he turned another page and placed the heading, Aroma Magic.

'By the nature of its name, it is clear that it uses aromatic compounds, along with other substances that can be used to stimulate a person. But another property of aromatic compounds is that they are flammable.

I can possibly use it just like we used vapor in the fight against Rhya, but this time, I can ignite them instead, which will help me to make something akin to a cylinder blast.

I cannot use it with allies, but for an all-out destruction, this is a more mana-efficient option.

Now, on to the next.'

This time, the title was Fire Magic.

'Hmm…Fire Magic as a support type is already straightforward and excellent in use, but to be used as an offensive spell is another story.

Mere constructs of it won't work.

I need to…compress it instead. I have read that if the fire were to be extremely compressed in a very small space, the ambient oxygen in the atmosphere can heat that tiny compressed flame can reach a temperature as high as the core of the Sun, though it was never tested.

Well, it was tested, but it gave rise to Doctor Octopus. But still, this is a world of magic, it must circumvent the rules of my world.'

With this thought, Wilhelm jotted it down as well.

'Now is the turn for Spatial Magic, one of the most ambiguous of them all.

I have been using it for mobility mostly, but now I must try to use it offensively as well.

The most obvious use at the top of my head is to hurl weapons through it as close as possible to the target.

Then, I can perhaps…no, definitely, create a spatial slash that strikes my target from an undefined range. Too obvious, and highly lethal.

Wait, can I slice atoms too?'

As soon as that thought came into his mind, one word rang the loudest.

"Nuclear Energy."

Wide-eyed, he began jotting down.

'When an atom is divided, it gives rise to nuclear fission. This fission is what creates nuclear energy. If…it is possible…then I need to be extremely cautious.

This fission may as well cause a chain reaction, and this whole world can get destroyed by it. I need to isolate it…I can isolate it with Al-Meissa Mercury.

Yeah, it is…plausible to say the least.'

With equal amounts of fear and excitement, he moved on and wrote another title.

'Water Magic.

After the basic spells that Rhya already has, I can use the osmotic pressure to drain an object of its water content, leading to dehydrating it.

If it happens instantly, it can be one of the most efficient ways to kill or incapacitate.

When water is heated above 374 °C and compressed above 22.064 MPa, it becomes supercritical water. At the supercritical state, it doesn't exist properly in any state, but it has properties of different states. This way, it can permeate through the smallest of pores and then can be expanded rapidly to kill or destroy structures.'

He flipped over another page and began writing once more.

'Wind Magic.

I can use wind magic to make tornadoes go in the opposite direction and shred anyone who touches the intersection of them.

Most importantly, I can make the air visibly dense so that it becomes outright difficult for the enemy to move.

I can also create a vacuum to implode my enemy, killing them in an instant.

Next comes Earth Magic, whose one direct and simple application that I can think of is Earthquake.

Moving on…comes Light Magic.

It has many uses, but the most important has got to be its dual property as proven by Einstein. Light shows properties of waves and particles. Though this is proven, not many objects have significant applications following this property.

But maybe I can use this property of light to diffract from obstacles by a larger margin than it naturally does and then strike them using its particle property.

Food for thought.'

Wilhelm spoke the last part internally and turned to the next blank page, beginning to jot down.

'Finally, the dubious World Tree Magic.

From what I have seen and heard from Captain Yami, I have two uses for it.

First, I can summon the tree itself, whose leaves can absorb mana from the atmosphere, and add that mana to the user instead. The branch of the tree can also be used to sap mana from the enemy when it wraps around them.

I can probably create a network of roots like mycorrhizal, which the trees have due to a symbiotic relation between fungi to share nutrients and mana instead of launching spells from any point they are spread through.'

Writing this, he skipped multiple pages when he wrote a big heading, Combination Magic.

'Now, the more creative part of magic.

Hmm…what do I begin with?

Let's see…what combination should make sense…Got it!

I can create a geode made from Mineral Magic and store energy in it using seismic activity on the ground using Earth Magic. Then, I can release this potential energy on the surface, acting like a piezoelectric sensor-based trigger.

Yeah, that works!'

Wilhelm thought as he quickly jotted down the idea, and following this, more and more ideas started to dance through his mind.

'Wait, I can actually upgrade on the slashes made using Spatial Magic alone. Only known counters of Spatial Magic are Dark Magic and Spatial Magic itself, but what if I were to combine them?

From what I have observed, Captain Yami's Dark Magic behaves less like a shadow and more like a gravity-less version of a black hole. Instead of space, it bends mana around it.

I can apply Non-Euclidean Geometry here.

According to this, when two points appear to be at a certain distance in Euclidean plane, due to following the gravitational lensing, the distance between them in space-time is very less, just like wormholes.

Here, Dark Magic that bends mana can take the place of gravity. This can cause me to launch Spatial Slashes as if I am attacking them from point blank, making them a sure-hit attack.'

With a wicked grin on his face, Wilhelm wrote the idea, feeling a malicious glee at imagining his opponents being cut like butter from an attack they cannot even dodge.

'Okay, next will be the sort of inverse of Solar Lance. Here, I can instead feed more oxygen-rich air to the fire, and not compress it. This method will consume more mana but will definitely be faster than compressing fire.

Also, if I do both, the results will be phenomenal. Maybe I can add aromatic compounds in the air to increase the fuel as well.

Huh, that is a great idea. Compressed fire capable of reaching a temperature equal to the core of the Sun, oxygen-rich air, and an increased amount of highly inflammable fuel. This is a recipe for disaster.'

Wilhelm appeared like a pyromaniac for a moment before he focused, shaking his head. Placing the end of his pen by his lip, he went deep into thought.

'I can try another version of slash, but this time using wind instead. Basic Wind slashes are a given, but if I were to concentrate air far too much in certain area creating a region of very high pressure, and then suddenly using Intangible Magic make the air in a smaller space behind my enemy intangible creating vacuum, then this wind will flow at a crushing force, shredding through the enemy.

Unlike other Spatial Slashes, this Slash is more oriented towards dealing group damage and crowd control. Extra pelleting from diamond shards that I can mix can be used to further the damage.

Also, since I am on the matter of slash, why don't I make one using Light and Wind Magic? I can use photons of light as a laser cutter, and Wind Magic to make a plasma sheath of sorts. This way, instead of extending indefinitely and being hard to use, I can control its size.

Hmm…will it be like a very thin lightsaber? Food for thought.'

Wilhelm thought as he squinted his eyes on how to improve upon this idea, but came up blank.

'Well, I can strengthen the sheath using Mineral Magic and cause a TIR (Total Internal Reflection) instead, and make photons collide within the tube. But it will make it more like a photon ejector instead.

Now moving on…

…'

Wilhelm focused hard, and when an idea struck him, that caused uncertainty to mask his face.

'Well, I am not completely sure of it, but can I use Soul Corpse Magic with Fire Magic to make Hellfire? Combining it with Chain Magic should make something like Chaos Blade, well, without the blade itself.

Ah…I am not sure. Soul Corpse Magic is not something that I even have a shred of an idea about. But if the idea above works, then I can actually use it without being ostracized for it.' Wilhelm scratched his head, tapping the pen on the table in a rhythm, and changed the page.

With a slight clarity, he continued writing.

'Since I am trying things with Chain Magic, why not make electricity run through them, and by varying it, I can create an induced magnetic field by changing flux. This will 100% give the result.'

Then, as he ended this, he eyed what he wrote, and a dry chuckle left his mouth.

"Heh, here I am controlling magnetism, whose very user is partially to blame for me being here. How…"ironic"."

Laughing at his own joke, he brought his pen close to the paper to write another entry, when he suddenly groaned in realization.

"Oh God! How can I be so dumb!? I did not even use my new familiars till now!

Is Magna and Asta's stupidity rubbing off on me?"

Shaking his hand, he brought his hand in front of him, aiming at nothing but barren land. He took a deep breath and then shouted at the top of his lungs.

"Al-Meissa Mercury!"

As he shouted the words, the space in front of his stretched out palm cracked, and suddenly two gigantic and long twin serpents launched, but time, Wilhelm felt a difference. This felt different when he summoned Regulus Aurum.

'I can…control them…?' He half questioned, as the serpents moved in the direction he willed them to. Up, down, left, right, opposite direction!

No matter what, they moved in the exact way he wanted. Wanting to witness their power, he conjured up 2 large portals and made the snake move towards them, and just when they touched, his portal disappeared. But then another thing happened, the second portal that he had created behind the serpent, or wanted to create, destabilized and shattered before it could even form.

He repeated the experiment many times before his eyes widened in realization.

'Wait, they not only eat the spatial magic, but the trail they leave behind does not allow portals to be formed. This is both useful and dangerous for me.' Wilhelm thought before he dispelled the spell, which caused the snakes to disappear in thin air. Just as it happened, he felt the space around him stabilize, and just to be safe, he created several portals, which now formed effortlessly.

Then, he moved on to the other familiar.

"Okay, here it goes." He mumbled and, taking a sharp inhale of air, he shouted.

"Mesarthim-Adamas!"

*RUMBLE*

With slight tremors of the earth, a gigantic sheep stepped onto the ground. The sheep had a menacing glint in his eyes and wielded a staff proportionate to his body.

Willing the familiar to move, the sheep created a giant red diamond. Multiple ones that completely sealed Wilhelm, who walked over to the diamond and gave it a slight knock.

'Sturdy as it looks. Let's see how much…'

Wilhelm thought as his body was covered with an orange hue, and, nocking his hand back, he let loose.

*BOOOOOMMMM*

A thundering sound followed by the sound of an explosion reverberated inside the diamond Wilhelm was encased in. This caused a storm of dust to kick up in the air.

But when the storm subsided, a peculiar sight greeted them.

Wilhelm was rubbing his hand that looked mauled with a flicker of ember healing it, while the diamond in question did not even have a single crack on it.

'Well, this is not called an impenetrable defense for no reason, I guess.' He thought, and when his hand finished healing, called Mesarthim-Adamas to recall these diamonds.

When it was done, the familiar vanished at Wilhelm's thought.

'This is extremely useful and seems to be the only thing that was withstanding the nuclear blast if I use it.'

Thinking this, he moved on to the last familiar of his.

"Cor Tauri-Sucinum!"

*THBRRRR*

Suddenly, the temperature around him increased manyfold, and the ground started to melt into lava at the presence of an equally giant bipedal Ox carrying a double-headed axe in his hand. Ash came out from his nostrils, blackening the air.

"Attack with your full power in that direction."

Wilhelm spoke, pointing in the direction in front of him. Without hesitation, the giant Ox brought down his equally giant axe on ground, which caused the ground all around him to shake, but this was not it.

In the direction he swung, the earth seemed to part, and lava started to erupt from it like a chaotic volcano. A strong slash of fire was launched from the axe, which seemed to be going endlessly in that direction, burning brightly like a solar flare.

But Wilhelm's eyes were not on fire, but on the massive gorge that was carved by him. Seeing the sheer destruction, Wilhelm was left gobsmacked.

'Dear God! He is capable of destroying all of Clover Kingdom with a single strike.'

Wilhelm thought as his expression changed into a wicked one at the devastation caused by Cor Tauri-Sucinum.

Unlike Regulus Aurum, whose destruction was focused in all directions, Cor Tauri-Sucinum's destruction was focused in one direction.

Seeing the effect of his new familiars, Wilhelm once again opened his book and began writing ideas for a new spell.

'I can isolate a space using Spatial Magic and Al-Meissa Mercury, which can help me to isolate the system, and decrease entropy instead of its well-defined behavior of increasing; this can cause the system to have a frozen time of its own. Though it is not something I am sure can happen.

Let's see…something more?

There is one more!

I can try to replicate Archimedes' Death Ray. I can use Light Magic as the go-to source of light, and use Glass Magic to focus the light.

I can make a plasma cannon, too. Yeah, it is possible. Using Lightning's ion to supercharge them and shooting it via a condensed tube will help with it.

A twister of tornado is a good drill-based attack as well that uses screws design to penetrate deeper dealing sustained damage at low cost of mana. This can also be a good way to crowd control.'

Then Wilhelm started to ride the wave.

'Using metals from Earth and supercharging them with lightning can facilitate their use as a railgun.

Using Glass Magic, I can create a resonance tube, and by having constructive interference, I can quadruple the amplitude of the wave of sound that I enter in it using Wind Magic.

I can also split the white light from a prism, and fill an entire area with light mana that can disrupt the mana sense of people by masking the mana signature of people under it. Though I will also be affected by it.

I can use aluminum and iron oxide from the earth, and create a thermite reaction that surpasses the temperature of lava. This will be a more controlled way to deal damage, even with allies around.

I can also heat the mineral of earth with fire, and create an orb which acts like a mini sun with exponentially less temperature than the sun.'

Writing this, Wilhelm started to practice the spells, when on the other side, something else altogether was happening in a meeting at Black Clover between Yami and Julius.
