Chapter 30 - Failed Infiltration

It was also because of this murderous impulse that it seemed entirely like a psychological problem of his own.

Therefore, Liens initially didn't think this was an influence caused by others.

But the Q&A with Marvin at noon today made him a little suspicious.

Liens thought back carefully, and he probably started to become irritable more than a month ago.

At that stage, he found everyone annoying, but fortunately, he still had some sanity and didn't directly act out in reality.

Instead, he entered the instance to find trouble.

Sometimes he would go in and beat someone up, and sometimes he would kill them directly.

The number of deliberate killings increased, and gradually, this irritability evolved into a murderous impulse.

Because of the cathartic behavior in the instance and the "forced calm" buff in the White Space.

So Liens only realized his psychological problem after being whipped by a guard for being distracted during a training session.

The so-called "forced calm" refers to the fact that in the White Space, only his own cognition can influence his thoughts.

Most human emotional fluctuations are caused by bodily hormones.

However, in the White Space, the body is just like a 3D model, only a layer of skin; muscles, hormones, and other bodily tissues and substances do not exist.

This is also why Liens has never practiced swordsmanship here.

He can control his body to perform any movement, but this itself is like the displacement of an image.

He cannot feel the exertion of his body from these movements, so naturally, he cannot experience the effect of practice.

And it was precisely this point that made Liens realize there was a problem with his body.

While in the White Space, he was at most indifferent to killing, but he completely lacked the desire for killing that he felt in the instance and in reality.

If it was truly a psychological problem causing a major change in his worldview.

Then there shouldn't be much difference in his thinking inside and outside the White Space.

Coupled with Marvin's unusual questions, Liens had every reason to suspect that his problem was caused by that old geezer.

Even if he was partly responsible for the current situation, was that old geezer really without any problems?

Anyway, Liens didn't believe it.

So he prepared to go into the instance to gather some information.

Since he couldn't get the information he wanted from Marvin, he could try a different approach and search his house, which might yield something.

Liens had already thought of doing this after confirming Marvin's identity.

But due to being busy with 'killing' and practicing swordsmanship, he didn't have time to do such 'unimportant' things.

Now that he had suspicions, he naturally elevated it to a priority.

...

Night, a complete silence.

Liens woke up from his bed, quietly got out of bed, wanting to sneak out of the dormitory silently.

"Liens, what do you want to do going out at night?" Ben's voice rang out in the silent dormitory, stopping Liens from opening the door.

"I can't sleep a bit, I want to go out for a walk," Liens responded softly to Ben, who was half-sitting on his bed.

"You... sigh... don't be impulsive."

Ben, of course, didn't believe such an excuse, but he also couldn't interfere with Liens's actions, so he could only sigh and advise Liens.

"I won't be impulsive."

After speaking, Liens directly opened the door and left the dormitory.

Although what he was going to do wasn't what Ben imagined, the same sentence could be applied in many situations.

Liens had already scouted the exact location of Marvin's room.

The way to scout was also very simple: he could find out by threatening a night patrol guard with death.

When "killing," Liens didn't just do it in the training square; sometimes he would also play the game of "nighttime killer."

Of course, all of the above were only in the instance, just like now.

Liens avoided the guard's patrol route and quickly made his way to Marvin's room in the dark.

There wasn't much time during the midday break, so Liens needed to be quick so he could have enough time to do it several times.

Looking at the brightly lit room in front of him, Liens sighed inwardly, thinking that old geezer was truly diligent.

He was still awake so late; didn't he know that old people needed the most sleep?

Don't blame Liens for always calling Marvin an old geezer.

Mainly, it was difficult for him to have any good feelings for the existence that enslaved him.

He decided to first check the situation inside the room from outside the window; if there was no gain, he would come back at another time.

The window was not high, and Liens could easily reach it.

In fact, to avoid exposing most of his body inside the window, Liens needed to squat down so that only his eyes and above were visible.

Although this was still somewhat obvious, he was lucky not to be discovered.

Liens scanned everything inside the room.

First, there were various glass, wooden, and metal instruments, distributed throughout the room, with at least one or two instruments in almost every space.

He had seen some of these instruments, such as the crystal ball that tested talent, but he didn't recognize most of them.

Beyond the instruments, there were some tables, chairs, sofas, bookshelves, beds... very basic furniture, with no special decor.

And Marvin, whom Liens was most concerned about, was sitting at a wooden table, diligently writing something.

It was precisely because he was too focused that Marvin didn't notice Liens observing him from outside the window.

Seeing Marvin's focused appearance, Liens felt he might be able to go a step further.

So he quietly passed through the open window... gently and slowly, allowing his body to cross the window little by little and enter the house.

However, because it was his first time and he wasn't skilled enough, the sound he made was a bit loud, which startled Marvin.

"Who?!"

Marvin looked in the direction of the sound and found that his key experimental subject was entering the house through the window.

Seeing that Marvin had discovered him, Liens simply stopped taking his time and stepped directly inside.

"Teacher Marvin, good evening... Why are you still awake? Don't you know that early to bed and early to rise makes one healthy? Older people have poor health and should go to bed even earlier."

Liens preempted, smiling and saying to Marvin repeatedly.

"Liens? What are you doing here at this hour?" Marvin didn't care about Liens's smiling face; instead, he asked him with a gloomy expression.

Although Liens was a Trainer who had lasted until now, in terms of fighting ability alone, he might not be Liens's opponent.

But Marvin wasn't worried, because he completely trusted the constraint of the "contract"; he knew that Liens couldn't possibly have the ability to attack him.

"Nothing... I just have some questions I'd like Teacher Marvin to clear up."

"Before coming, I was worried that the teacher had already fallen asleep... but I didn't expect the teacher to be so diligent, still awake at this hour."

"By the way, what was the teacher just writing... so diligently? I knocked on the door several times, but you didn't hear me."

Liens said evasive words while gradually approaching Marvin's position.

"Stop, stand there and don't move."

Marvin noticed Liens gradually approaching him, so he reprimanded him.

Although he was sure that Liens couldn't cause him any harm, he didn't want a source of danger to get too close to him.

Liens, of course, didn't want to stop his actions of approaching Marvin, but to temporarily appease Marvin, he still stopped his steps.

"Teacher, it's late at night, if we're too far apart, it's inconvenient to talk, and it's inconvenient for you to hear."

"Isn't this affecting my discussion with you later?"

"How about... I take two more steps closer?"

Liens continued to speak to Marvin, as if asking for his opinion, but in reality, while saying this, he took two big steps forward again.

At this moment, Liens was already very close to Marvin's position.
