Chapter 84 - Chapter 7 Part 3.1

May 6th 2508

ETA 87 Days.

It was weird coming to school days after the hurricane, and a day behind everyone else who'd had to wait for reconstruction.

But a day was enough to know her way. The bus to school was a quiet affair, Kate and Griff got on together, sat sitting near the rear together and got out together. Which proved an awkward affair as they were stuck between a dozen yellow buses that were their own traffic jam as they waited for a spot. There had to be a fleet of youth friendly scooters which they had to dance around, where a fleet were already parking.

The school crowds were enormous! Over five thousand kids in one spot, in the morning, which was not the norm. Not for a single campus, not for a random day in the week.

But the walk with Griff had put thoughts in her head.

What could she do with that information? A big, wide school.

Okay? So what?

She took in as much as she could before reaching the line separating the primary and middle school.

"Be good you little ass."

Kate squeezed his hand only to flip him over and push him away with a kick and a laugh.

Just like that she was alone again, walking the land slowly. And yes, her gut confirmed it, Kate couldn't deal with being alone. A desperate hollowness tugged at her soul like whatever glue keeping her from dissipating had vanished. And that meant what exactly? Who knew? She did. Kate needed to be a friend to someone.

To many.

She'd been a target once already. There was probably a target on her back right then. Someone eyeing her as she walked, her back exposed, a lone turtle, in an ocean of souls, evil thoughts blossoming in innocent minds, with a vulnerable Kate being all but two years ahead, she must have looked like a snack.

God the cousins would be thrilled.

For them, the greatest gift. For Kate? An unnecessary obstacle.

Also, a thought hit.

Was she short? Sort of, yes.

But no midget.

She was in line for continual growth according to her D and RNA readings. God she was even space worthy.

The numbers were being done for her. Then she stopped quite literally halting her walk.

That was it.

Wasn't it?

She was thinking about the situation like an idiot. She didn't have home ground advantage. And yet there she was, retaliating like she had any idea of the who, what, where and how. She was a grain of sand in an ocean.

She needed a link!
