Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Escape part 1 - Human shield

'That mist may fool law enforcement enough to get to the center district. My memories of this region are hazy at best, but [Nature Perception] will serve its purpose admirably. For the time being, I must prepare for a fight that I would prefer not to have. First, I have to head south and find Old Man Nate, my old butler, who should be around 67 years old right now. Lie low in the south to find out what happened during my absence in Carllo,' Jerry reasoned as he created three interconnected circles with unusual inscriptions that appeared to be extraterrestrial and in an unspoken language.

This was arcane script, a technique of harnessing power to achieve specific feats of might, invention, and destruction. So Jerry was drawing up a plan of sorts, and after he finished, he removed his blindfold, revealing the sunken remains of where his eyes once were.

The mist spews from the socket.

The creepy mist lunged at the circle, which began to glow purple as the inscription altered shape and spelling as the circle's effects absorbed the mist. Jerry covered his eye sockets with the blindfold, not tying it, and holding it in place.

He then began chanting:

"Holder of seals and preparer of domains"

"I seek temporary shelter to lock up my gates."

"Sticks and stones bear no weight, diamonds and crystals bear seals of greed."

"My greed needs to be mitigated and controlled by my will alone as foretold."

"I ask for a week of protection, and my payment is laid out to you."

[Nectar Seal].

When the circle darkened, Jerry instantly removed the blindfold and placed it on one of the circles and his two hands.

The circle flashed purple, illuminating his hands and the network of nerves that linked to his eye sockets, and it emitted a blinding light that broke forth like an evening light show. A signal that one of the officials spotted and reported to their colleagues as they approached the light cautiously. The brilliance diminished as obsidian marbles with a purple glow filled the emptiness of his eye sockets. Instead of the blindfold, a pair of darkening shades appeared as the circle evaporated into a shower of dust and dim purple light.

Jerry put on the shades, which vibrated and rested on his ears and nose bridge, while the marbles sparkled. Jerry inhaled and exhaled a thick black mist that enveloped his torso.

"Jerry Madison, you are under arrest; come out and you will not be harmed. One of the cops reported that as he pulled out a black rod and pressed a button, an electronic discharge was released.

The heavy mist evaporated as Jerry came out, dressed for stealth and practicality. Armor covering his arms and chest was integrated into a full-body costume with visible kunai, throwing knives, and small compartments on his chest. His sunglasses shone with two small purple lights.

"Wait, doesn't he wear a blindfold?"

 Jerry smiled and said sarcastically:

"I still wear it," he replied, moving forward with his arms up, "Now I must warn you, fine officers of Carllo, to walk away or escort me to the southern district in the city's abandoned sector, choice is yours."

"I am afraid we cannot do that, kid." One of the officers rushed in with his rod, causing an electrical bolt of charged lightning to fly right toward Jerry's chest. Jerry quickly ignited an energy-concentrated blade from his two fingers and sliced the bolt diagonally, causing it to split in two and break a portion of the building's wall behind him.

Some of the policemen stood silently in awe as they modified their tactics, while others used their awakened powers based on the energy impulses picked up by [Nature perception], which did not require Jerry's mental activation. Thanks to that arcane procedure, Jerry instilled the power into the marbles that serve as his eyes for the rest of the week.

He had internalized three sensory abilities: [Nature perception] for ripple effect senses, [Mist presence] for detecting live entities in the mist, and [Enhanced four senses], which improved his hearing, taste, touch, and smell.

One cop assaulted Jerry with an invisible fist, aiming for his face. Using his hands and body, Jerry directed the discharge of power into a building and knelt the officer in the stomach as they coughed, releasing part of the power as Jerry pulled away from his officers, who ducked and attempted to strike in a unified front.

Jerry disarmed and attacked in a violent yet graceful dispersing fashion, leaving no chance for the officers to retaliate. Jerry utilized a quick move of his hands to point the electrical rods at the officer's chest, knocking them out immediately. He then knocked out one with an open-hand haymaker to the chin, prompting the officer to bite his tongue.

The final two cops maneuvered to surround Jerry, and one used his abilities to change the dirt at his foothold, causing Jerry to shift uncomfortably as he nearly collapsed. The attacking cop recognized this as an advantage and attacked with fists laced with vibrant colours, which Jerry caught up on. Using his hand as a balancer, he leaned his weight against it and executed a rocket double kick to the chest with his legs.

Jerry sprang up and grasped the officer's chin; it was a woman. Jerry tilted his head to add:

"Ma'am, could you tell me where the western course is from here? Direction would be helpful, but I wouldn't hurt you too much. It's just enough for you not to follow me."

Scared, the woman raised her hand and pointed to the left. Jerry turned to face the energy indications, which were creating a barrier near the southern bridge. Jerry then listened as he heard additional officers approaching from all directions.

He looked at the woman and grinned:

"Apologies, ma'am, this might hurt" with a snip of his finger, a mist swirl, and a wasp of black light gas on top of his fingers. He then led toward the woman's leg and flicked it there till it vanished the instant it hit the leg. Jerry then let her go and turned, leaving just visible mist and the crate where he was as he moved toward the bridge.

As the woman attempted to assist her co-workers, a severe ache caused her to collapse on one knee. She realized what had happened when she saw black vines pumping something into her bloodstream. She wanted to move, but the pain forced her to stand still and wait.

Jerry's POV:

The world looked like an unfinished digitalized old game with open world graphics. Jerry's new obsidian eyes made him see something, objects as unfinished items, and people as faceless mimics who all looked the same, but the auras were different. Each aura had a unique hue and color that indicated whether you were male or female, as well as whether Jerry recognized you.

I ran while utilizing my energy to maintain my current depleted stamina and pace; my legs felt weighted, as if I had been exercising for years now.

Suddenly, a sharp spread of silver, blue, and grey aura attracted my attention; the individual appeared to be an authoritative figure, along with others who may be a little below his level, and those who were closer to his aura.

The sensation reminded regions of my brain of a middle-aged officer with a severe countenance and comfortable smiles when he observed me and his daughter play.

"Uncle Baker," I exclaimed as I jumped and landed in the center of the blockade. I lifted my head and smiled as trained officers pointed weapons at me.

"It's been a while," I said with excitement.

I heard a faint breath coming out of his mouth as he added in a raspy voice.

"So, it would seem, Criminal no. 22387 and its officer Baker to you".
