The surrounding young Trainers remained motionless, as if they already knew they weren't a match for this boy.
A few Trainers, who had just arrived like Silas, chose to step up and challenge the boy named Yezo in one-on-one battles but without exception, they were all swiftly defeated.
After waiting for a while and seeing no one else daring to challenge him, the boy named Yezo looked visibly disappointed and prepared to leave.
Silas stood up from his seat nearby. "I'll go. That's allowed, right?"
Miss Joy, who was watching from the side, confirmed his age.Yezo nodded indifferently. "Sure. Come on."
The two of them took their positions at the edge of the battlefield. As the Pokémon Center referee waved the flag, both Trainers released their Pokémon at the same time.
"Go, Boldore!"
"Come out, Golbat!"
Despite the unfavorable type matchup, Yezo's expression didn't change. Although he hadn't used Golbat earlier, he had always trained Poison-type Pokémon. Having someone counter with a Rock-type was completely expected.
The last opponent had used a Graveler.
But type advantage didn't directly equate to victory.
"Gravity Field."
"Giga Drain."
A field of earthy yellow gravitational energy quickly spread out, covering more than half the battlefield.
Golbat wobbled erratically in midair. The sudden pressure from the gravity made it lose balance momentarily.
But having trained frequently in gravity chambers, it quickly regained control. A glowing green energy orb slowly but steadily formed at its mouth and shot toward Boldore.
"Rock Blast!"
Silas didn't pay the slightest attention to the approaching Giga Drain orb. Instead, he commanded Boldore to launch its attack directly.
"Tch." Yezo coffed with disdain. Another boring battle.
He knew full well that Boldore's slow movement didn't mean its move activation would also be slow. But Golbat was incredibly agile in the air. Even under the effect of Gravity, it could easily dodge a straight-line attack like Rock Blast.
Even if it got hit once, if the opponent didn't dodge the Giga Drain, Golbat would recover the HP it lost right away.
He remained silent, confident that his Golbat would dodge on its own. Training wasn't for nothing, after all.
Sure enough, even without any command from Yezo, Golbat began flying in erratic, unpredictable patterns.
Everything was going exactly as Yezo had anticipated.
The Rock Blast projectiles soared through the air and were just about to be dodged by Golbat.
Then suddenly Golbat's body froze midair for a split second. It quickly regained composure, moving even faster afterward, but that brief pause was all it took.
The first rock struck Golbat. Then the second. Then the third...
All five rocks hit their mark.
Against such super-effective damage, and with Golbat not known for its defense or stamina, it instantly lost the ability to battle.
Even though Giga Drain managed to hit Boldore and dealt decent damage, the healing effect it offered no longer mattered.
"Whoa!"
The crowd of onlookers burst into an uproar. How could the boy who had just won so many battles back to back lose so easily? The new challenger was incredible!
Yezo was also stunned. His face twisted in disbelief. What the why did Golbat freeze up like that mid-fight? Was it trying to screw with him?
No, no, no! He quickly shook his head to drive out the ridiculous thought. That couldn't be real. According to his grandmother, his bond with Golbat was so strong that it was already close to evolution. Something like betrayal was impossible.
He nodded forcefully to reaffirm that such a thing couldn't happen.
Silas returned Boldore to its Poké Ball and clicked his tongue in dissatisfaction. Still not good enough. If he were more skilled, the gravity field should've been able to suppress the energy orb from Giga Drain too force it straight to the ground and avoid taking any damage altogether.
He looked at Yezo, who was standing across from him, alternating between shaking and nodding his head. What a weirdo. Probably a dunce.
He quickly called out, "Hey, you lost. Hand over the check."
Yezo, acting on instinct, handed the check to Silas.
Silas accepted it and turned to leave. Yezo snapped back to his senses, just about to ask what had happened with his Pokémon, but Silas had already vanished into the crowd.
Come on now of course you run while the guy's still in a daze! What if he suddenly changes his mind?
With one hand holding the check and the other flicking it for fun, Silas looked at the 800,000 amount printed on it with great satisfaction. Round it up and that's basically today's food expenses covered. Honestly, it's at least worth two B-rank missions.
"If only there were more rich idiots like this."
Silas was well aware that he had benefited from the improvement of a move.
In this world, people had grown so accustomed to Pokémon using standardized moves that most trainers didn't even consider the idea of modifying them. As if the very notion of move modification had never existed in their minds. Only a very small number of trainers ever tried to train Pokémon to change their moves.
Of course, most of those attempts ended up with effects like Daisy's non-positive modifications which only discouraged people even more. After all, the gains rarely outweighed the risks.
A move like Gravity, for example if pushed far enough, it could even become a form of repulsion force. It wasn't like Silas's elementary school physics from his previous life had been learned for nothing. But in this world, the concept didn't even exist; academic disciplines were all centered around Pokémon.
It was worth noting that even the aerospace industry in this world was limited to within the atmosphere. Try to break through, and the green caterpillar living up there would remind you who truly ruled this world.
No one could do anything about it. Rayquaza had always been one of the most powerful Legendary Pokémon, and its temper wasn't exactly mild. Even if some of the top human powerhouses got involved, it would be hard to physically convince it to move aside.
At their core, Pokémon were still animals. Getting them to give up territory was harder than just trying to kill them.
Besides, a lot of knowledge from Silas's past life simply didn't apply under this world's laws.
Back in his room, Silas began organizing the lesson plans for the upcoming week. Originally, he'd wanted to stay longer at the battle arena, but the unexpected gains from earlier had disrupted his schedule.
Since I'm back, I might as well prepare a bit more. Can't afford to embarrass myself during class.
While Silas was holed up in his room preparing, he was completely unaware that his easy defeat of Yezo had already drawn the attention of a true power holder in the Pokémon League.
"A trainer funded by that old man Takeshi's descendants? He seems pretty good."
A chilling voice of an old woman echoed through a dark, eerie room.
A respectful young male voice responded, "Yes. He directly defeated the young master's Crobat. According to analysis from the data department, it was likely due to an irregular pressure caused by the Gravity move."
"Hmm." The old woman paused in thought. "Don't tell that little rascal. Let him figure it out on his own. Losing a few matches to peers won't hurt."
"Yes, ma'am!" the man answered before withdrawing from the room.
"Silas Alaric… hmm…"
