Chapter 54: Ashes of a Pact
Ben's fists pounded the edge of the desk, hard enough to rattle the inkpot. The quill leapt, the parchment tore at the corner. "You promised us freedom, your majesty. Now you're making her do exactly what Oliver made us do. Odi's risked more than both of us combined. Why don't you give her her freedom? We promise to be out of your sight—and if necessary, out of your kingdom—in the twinkle of an eye."
Across from him, Darius didn't flinch. He remained seated, spine straight, hands folded calmly before him. The fire in the hearth cracked behind him, casting flickering shadows across the hollows of his face, carving him into stone and flame.
"It isn't about chains," Darius said evenly. "It's about purpose. And we're at the final turn. If she returns with what I sent her for, and she still wants to leave, then yes— I promised her that, and she has my word. You'll have your freedom. Both of you. With our thanks, no less."
