Outside the makeshift fitting room in Hilda's sewing studio, Allen stood by the door, his all-black formal suit draped over his arm.
His gaze drifted to the living room, where Rudeus and Hilda were deep in discussion about fabric choices and the development of the capital's garment industry. Unlike Allen, who wore his swordsman attire, Rudeus had already been dressed in a shirt and trousers that matched the short suit jacket, so he had no need to wait outside the fitting room.
"How do I look, Allen?!"
With a bang, the door burst open, and Eris leaped out.
Her crimson figure burned like wildfire.
The sheer intensity of her presence demanded attention—vibrant red fabric swirling around her, matching her fiery hair, as if flames themselves danced along her silhouette. Yet the flowing, water-like fringe designs softened the sharpness, balancing her usual ferocity into something harmonious.
Allen, however, immediately averted his gaze.
Sylphie was still inside changing. Since they were both girls, there was no need for modesty between them.
"It suits you. Compared to your usual black-and-white dresses, this fiery red matches your presence better."
"Presence? What do you mean?" Eris shut the door behind her, circling around to stand in front of Allen, arms crossed.
"You stand out."
Her lips curled into a grin, and she immediately dashed toward Hilda.
"Mother! Allen says it fits perfectly!"
"It really does," Hilda chuckled behind her hand. "Seems neither you nor Rudeus need any more adjustments. The fringe was the right choice—it complements your energy beautifully."
"You're amazing, Mother!"
Allen watched quietly as Hilda laughed softly and Eris beamed with unrestrained pride.
The setting sun bathed their red hair in a glow so vivid it felt seared into his vision.
Then—
A soft creak.
The sound of the door opening beside him.
Allen instinctively tensed, his neck stiffening unnaturally.
Not even the Sword King of the North had ever made his muscles lock up like this.
The thought of an evening gown—specifically, Sylphie's evening gown—stabbed into his mind like a blade, freezing him for a rare, hesitant moment.
Why?
From the moment he had started changing until now, his thoughts had been occupied by the outfit Hilda had personally tailored for him—the one currently draped over his arm. The fabric was smooth, almost comparable to mid-range suits from his past life. A testament to Hilda's meticulous care.
Yet only now, at the precipice of seeing Sylphie in her gown, did reality truly sink in.
Sylphie.
Evening dress.
White—the color that suited her best, the one he loved most on her.
Low-cut.
A low-cut evening gown on Sylphie?
Wait, seriously?
His thoughts and neck moved in tandem as the scene inside the room unfolded before him.
The fading sunlight streaked across his vision, casting hazy halos over the walls, doorframe, and—
The sliver of space where the door had cracked open.
A single glance.
That was all it took to yank his scattered senses back to earth.
His sharpened expression—one that had gradually returned to its usual intensity since October—flickered with surprise.
In his line of sight—
The door was barely ajar.
Sylphie's face peeked out from the gap, half her body still hidden behind the door.
Hesitant. Uncertain.
Strands of her white hair spilled over the frame, curling in delicate arcs.
Beneath those strands—
Her shoulders were bare, slender in a way only a girl's could be.
The line of her neck traced down from her jaw, pale and smooth.
Two necklaces adorned her collarbone.
One, a delicate chain resting just above her clavicle, following the subtle rise of bone and the faint blue veins beneath her skin.
The other—a pendant—hung lower, nestled against softer skin, swaying slightly with her posture.
Silver against white.
Then, unmistakably—
A flush of pink.
Not from the sunset.
But from Sylphie herself.
She was blushing.
The next second—
The door swung open fully.
The evening dress finally revealed itself in its entirety.
But Allen had already snapped his gaze away, staring fixedly at the sewing machine in Hilda's studio.
Was it just him, or did that machine suddenly look… oddly charming?
"Should I go in and change now?"
Sylphie nodded faintly, stepping aside.
Allen exhaled silently and moved past her into the room.
Click.
The door shut softly behind him.
He set his clothes down on the sewing table, reaching to undo his shirt—
Then froze.
A heartbeat.
Faster than usual.
Close.
Too close.
His eyes widened. In a motion swifter than Eris's sword swings, he whirled around—
And found himself face-to-face with Sylphie.
She stood with her back against the door, staring up at him.
She hadn't left.
And now, in full view, Allen finally saw the dress properly.
Beneath the pendant, a soft white ribbon tied at the base of her throat, the ends trailing down her sides like falling snow.
It reminded him of moonlight in a valley.
Sylphie spoke.
"Allen."
"Huh?"
"Will it fit you?"
He blinked. "Y-Yeah. It should."
Her lashes fluttered as she glanced away, ears twitching slightly. Then, with quiet insistence—
"Not… this one."
"I've been with Lady Hilda these past few days. She took my measurements and adjusted this dress, so of course it fits."
Allen paused.
Then it clicked.
"Will it fit?"
If she wasn't talking about her dress, then—
She meant the one in his hands.
Somehow, without hearing his thoughts, she had answered the question lingering in his mind.
He looked down at the shirt and suit jacket draped over his arm.
Hilda had never measured him.
So why did it seem like they'd fit perfectly?
A hand reached into his line of sight—Sylphie's.
She took his wrist, guiding him toward the wardrobe.
The sewing room was small, so it took only a few steps before they stood before the closet.
She pulled it open.
Rows upon rows of meticulously crafted men's clothing filled the space—every size, every age.
Packed tightly.
Unmissable.
Allen stared.
Why did the clothes fit so well?
The answer was simple.
Coincidence?
Fate?
Or—
Inevitable
