“What did you say?” Félix asked. 

She repeated, “Name your price.” 

“What is that supposed to mean?” 

His voice had tapered off with an unreadable emotion that got her weak in her knees, but she held out her chin. “Didn't you once offer to pay me off? Now, make me an offer I cannot refuse. Otherwise, I will go in there"—she gestured toward the Ball—"and make everyone think you dragged me out here to take advantage of me. I know exactly what that would do to your reputation.”

“Say. That. Again,” Félix said through gritted teeth as he inched closer to her.

Blood drained fast from her hands and feet. The tips of her fingernails tingled as if stung by needlefish. Estella winced to mask her growing discomfort. When her eyes suddenly dazzled her where she stood, she instantly knew that one rash move would send her slumping to the floor. 


Powerless, her body foundered hell-for-leather into an ailing protest. 


All at once, acute dizziness, borderline breathlessness, and intense chills threatened to knock her down, nearly taking her out. Estella hadn't eaten in so long. That had to have a hand in her presently lived experience of near passing out. She sulked.


A tired sigh dragged out of her, punctuated by her raw, pained moans. She had zero fighting strength left in her.
