Chapter 25 - Ch 25 - End of the Second Trial (2)

Damon stood right before Kai, at a distance that barely surpassed the length of a full arm.

His right hand clenched tightly into a fist—nerves bulging on the back of his hand—retreated all the way back to his shoulder, ready to launch itself towards Kai at any moment with all of its strength.

His body which was previously only slightly taller than Kai's, now looked almost double his size.

It was a battle where even a child could easily tell the winner. It almost looked like a face-off between a well-grown Tank like Mammoth and a half-dead Lion's cub.

Kai knew that it was a fight that seemed nearly impossible for him to win, and yet, he decided to tighten his grip on the spear.

His eyes focused on Damon, scanning even the smallest bits of his movements. He didn't have any definitive response, but he could feel it better than anything else:

'The moment I take my eyes off of him, my head will go flying...'

His brows were narrowed—almost tensed—as he pondered whether to attack first or not.

'If I attack first, then he'll have sufficient time to launch a counterattack, but if I let him take the first hit and fail to dodge his attack, it'll mark the end of my life.'

Kai couldn't help but let his mind be swarmed by all kinds of thoughts as he could feel the slight sensation of numbness returning to his body.

"I can't delay this any longer—" As he muttered under his breath, for a split second, he saw Damon's fist slightly move.

It was a tiny movement. Small enough to deceive anyone into thinking that his hand hadn't moved at all.

However, Kai wasn't foolish enough to believe anything like that because he, himself, had seen—in fact, experienced—the kind of power that Damon demonstrated.

Rather than to think over his thoughts at a time like this, Kai decided to play safe and shifted all of his weight towards his left. His whole body twisted as he began to fall towards his left.

"Huh?"

From the corner of his eyes, he captured a vague, distorted image of something that he didn't recognize. His eyes darted towards his right and immediately shrank in shock.

At a distance of a finger's width, he could see Damon's right arm extending forward with so much speed and force that its reflection had become distorted even to his eyes.

'That was... Close...'

He gulped down the saliva in his mouth alongside the sudden feeling of shock and instantly shoved the wooden end of his spear into the ground—using it as a support to regain balance.

He then proceeded to lower his body further, his eyes darted up and down simultaneously—setting his eyes on his target while also making sure that his back was secure.

Damon instinctively knew that Kai was trying to counter his attack and thus, changed the trajectory of his attack and aimed his punch down towards the ground.

Kai noticed the sudden change in the attack and pushed himself to the side of Damon's leg with his spear.

Damon's attack missed Kai by a small margin, and his fist fell onto the ground with a loud thud; the soil beneath his fist submerged further into the ground while uneven cracks spread out, outlining his fist.

Meanwhile, Kai landed on the ground with a roll to balance out his abrupt jump. He raised his gaze and realized that he had surprisingly entered the blind zone of Damon.

He was looking at the most vulnerable area of Damon—his back.

'Just a single good strike... And the win is mine!'

As if resonating with his excited demeanor, his irises began to inhabit a faint red glow while the sclera of his eyes grew visibly duller.

He swung his spear all the way from his left to the right with all his might, creating a large arch of silver.

The spearhead—glistening in crimson—was yet again fed blood as it sliced through the back of his ankles, seamlessly cutting through the muscles that controlled his feet.

At a single glance, the wound itself didn't look harmful at all. Since the whole back was exposed, it looked like a waste for him to just injure his ankles.

However, it wasn't as though Kai didn't want to pierce his spear through his heart—but rather, he couldn't.

He knew for a fact that the amount of time it would take for him to get up and aim for his heart would've been sufficient for Damon to realize the situation and counter his attack.

Soon, Damon did realize the situation as a sharp pain seethed through his muscles, pulsing around his ankles while his feet suddenly lost all sensations.

But his raw, beastly instincts made him try to counterattack anyway. He tried to turn around, but due to his unresponsive feet, he fell to the ground on his back.

Knowing that it was his first and last opportunity to finish things off easily, Kai took a leap of faith towards Damon and quickly spun his spear around, making his spearhead aim downward this time.

Damon could see Kai slowly coming towards him through the air with a spear aimed at him, but he couldn't react at all.

No matter how hard he tried, his body didn't move as it was facing the rebound from the sudden fall.

In the reflection of his eyes, the image of the spearhead slowly grew larger and larger.

For the first time since he had fallen into the state of berserk, in the face of what looked like his end, Damon calmed down.

His irregular, beastly growls came to an end while his body, which uncontrollably desired to kill, finally felt at peace.

A soft smile curled onto his lips as though it was his way of thanking Kai before his body shook for the last time.

*Squelch!*

A sharp, eerie sound reverberated throughout the whole battlefield.

Kai landed on the ground—standing at the left of Damon's head—perfectly fine while his spear handle stood tall with its head buried deep inside the skull of Damon.

He had successfully pierced his spear through the forehead of Damon, letting it pass through his skull and its tip be slightly dug in the ground—putting an end to his life instantly.
