Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Exploring the capital

I was running around the capital buying one dessert after another.

According to the letter I received this morning, my adoptive father had returned from another kingdom and wanted to see me first thing tomorrow afternoon.

That meant I had to do everything I wanted in the capital today.

I thanked the stall owner as I handed Trixie something called Portokalopita. Weird name, I know, but it was so good!

As I was eating mine I wasn't paying attention to where I was going and bumped into someone.

I stumbled back, barely regaining my balance, and said, "Sorry."

But froze when I saw who I had bumped into.

They were wearing a hood as they mumbled, "M'lady?"

"Eugene? Eugene! It's been a while!" I said with a large grin on my face.

Before he could reply a young girl who was also wearing a hood walked in between the two of us as she glared at me asking, "And who are you?"

I took a step back surprised before asking, "Why should I tell you?"

"Do you know who I am?"

"... To be honest, no."

She looked even more annoyed before suddenly removing her hood saying, "My name is Phoebe Adonis, daughter of Marquesses Demetrius Adonis.

She had green eyes just like Eugene, but her hair was brown. You could tell they were related because her looks were on par with Eugene's!

Both of them were wearing simple clothes even though they were nobles.

She grinned saying, "Cat caught your tongue? It's fine I'll forgive you if you tell me what relationship you have with my older brother."

I knew it! they're siblings! Though their looks may match their personalities definitely don't.

Eugene was about to say something, but I couldn't let this go, my pride wouldn't be able to handle it.

I grinned saying, "It's nice to meet you Phoebe, I'm Selene Deacon, your brother Eugene's fiancée."

Phoebe froze before mumbling, "Fiancée?"

"That's right I guess with the way things are going I'll be your sister in law."

"No way. I won't let my brother marry someone like you!"

"Someone like me?!"

"Lady Selene, please forgive my little sister, she's still learning proper etiquette." Eugene said, stopping the both of us from arguing. "Why don't we go somewhere more private."

That's when I started to notice people staring.

I nodded as we followed Eugene arriving at a quieter place near a small flowing river.

Phoebe sat in between Eugene and I while glaring at me.

I ignored her as I turned to Eugene asking, "So what brings you to the capital?"

"I had some official business to take care of with the imperial family, Phoebe wanted to see the capital so I brought her along since I wasn't staying long, how about you lady Selene?"

"Oh the Princess, invited me to a tea party. I attended yesterday and decided to just spend the rest of the day exploring the capital. I'll return home first thing tomorrow morning."

"Good riddance," Phoebe replied.

Before Eugene could say anything I stood up asking, "Are you busy today?"

"Uh no, I have the whole day to myself, why do you ask lady Selene?"

"Well then let's go explore the capital, It'll be fun! You can even bring her." I replied glancing at Phoebe

"Oh of course if you don't mind spending the day with us."

I grinned, grabbing Eugene's hand as I dragged him back to the more entertaining places of the capital.

I heard Phoebe screaming to bring back her brother as I just kept running without looking back.

Eugene managed to pull his hood up as we ran. We stopped outside a bakery as I stared at a chocolate cake through the window.

I paused before asking, "Hey Eugene, do you like chocolate cake?"

Eugene paused before saying, "No not really I've always preferred vanilla. Do you like chocolate cake lady Selene?"

"Yeah it's my favorite, I always went out with my parents on my birthday. We'd have a big meal at our favorite restaurant, then stuff our faces with chocolate cake for dessert." I replied with a small smile on my face

He looked at me, surprised, when Phoebe suddenly appeared out of nowhere saying, "How dare you leave without me!"

I sighed saying, "Fine, let's go then. We're going shopping!" Extending my hand for Phoebe to hold onto.

She gave me a look that said, "Why should I hold your hand?"

I leaned in closer to her whispering, "Your choice, I hold your hand or your brother's."

She glared at me before holding my hand as I dragged her along to a shop. Trixie went to the person working there before whispering something.

The person there led us to another large room with super fancy clothes. I paused before turning to the person and asking for another set of types of clothes.

She nodded and soon after she arrived with a bunch of them I grinned looking through it before asking her to deliver them all to the Deacon manor.

Trixie paid her as I turned to Phoebe saying, "Well then let's look through the clothes."

She looked at me, clearly irritated by my presence but I just grabbed a dress placing it in front of her as I tried to imagine it on her.

I turned to Eugene and Trixie as I asked, "What do you think?"

Eugene paused before saying, "She's not a big fan of dresses with bow if that helps."

"It does." I replied before grabbing another dress without a bow.

Trixie spoke up saying, "The color doesn't fit her."

"Yeah, you're right." I replied.

Phoebe stared at the three of us, completely confused. While we just picked a bunch of clothes that would fit her.

In the end we didn't find anything perfect. But I did grab a dress that was so pretty!

I sighed saying, "Well then why don't we get lunch."

As we were leaving Trixie turned to me as she asked, "My lady, there's something I need to take care of, if it's alright–"

"Yeah of course but make sure to stay safe, I'll be in the middle of the town when the sun sets."

Trixie looked at me surprised before curtsying, saying, "Understood."

We headed out for lunch, grabbing these super large sandwiches for each of us. I couldn't help laughing as I watched Phoebe try to take a bite from the middle of the sandwich but her mouth was too small.

She glared at me and shouted, "Jerk! Jerk! Jerk!" her face slightly red with embarrassment.

While I just laughed.

By the time I finished eating I smiled saying, "That was probably the best thing I've eaten in a while."

(That isn't a dessert.)

Phoebe looked at me trying not to laugh which only confused me, Eugene just smiled before saying, "lady Selene, there's a little sauce on your face."

"More than a little." Phoebe said still laughing

My face turned bright red as I grabbed a napkin and wiped my mouth.

We walked through the capital, doing multiple things when we stopped at the middle of the capital where there was a fountain.

I sat down at the edge exhausted before I suddenly fell in. Eugene ran towards me as he asked me if I was alright.

I nodded when I heard Phoebe laughing. Instead of taking Eugene's hand to get out I grabbed Phoebe pulling her into the fountain with me.

I started laughing when she suddenly splashed water at my face. I splashed back and before we knew it, we were both soaked and laughing.

Eugene stood there with a small smile on his face before helping the two of us out.

He gave me his jacket while he wrapped Phoebe with his cloak.

Before we knew it Phoebe was asleep and Eugene was carrying her. We left the crowded space since Eugene didn't have his cloak anymore.

The sun had almost set as I turned to Eugene asking, "Are there any astrologers around? It'd be so cool to find out what my enhancement is if I even have one."

Eugene paused before saying, "I do know of one and last I heard there staying around here for a while."

Eugene led the way and by the time we arrived in front of a small old building the sun had set.

He knocked three times, as the door slowly opened. It was pitch black inside.
