Chapter 101 - Chapter 101: Arithmancy Divination

After finishing handling the diary-related matters, Link finally relaxed completely.

This also caused his summer vacation life afterward to pass especially quickly; it was almost like in the blink of an eye that the day before school started had arrived.

On the night before the school year began, Mrs. Flamel even specifically had Little Button prepare a table full of a lavish feast. And on the next day, Mrs. Flamel personally drove her dark red convertible sports car to send Link to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters.

This was an old tradition of the Flamel family, no matter how busy she was, on this day, Mrs. Flamel would always clear her schedule to personally send Link to school.

But what was a bit of a pity was that Mrs. Flamel, unlike other mothers, would not accompany Link all the way to board the Hogwarts Express. Instead, after dropping him off at the station entrance, she would drive away in grand fashion.

Link didn't have any opinion about this, and all alone he passed straight through the magical wall and entered the platform.

Compared to when Link came last time, there were clearly more people on the platform now. Everywhere were mothers and children reluctant to part, mixed in with the screeches of many owls and the crying and shouting of children, which made the whole platform extremely noisy.

Link had no interest in watching the lively scene and directly boarded the train.

However, just as he had sat down in the Hufflepuff carriage, a hand clapped onto his shoulder.

"Link, how was your holiday?"

Link turned toward the voice and saw Cedric, whom he hadn't seen in a long time, looking at him with a smile in his eyes. That smile was still as bright and righteous as always.

This lifted Link's mood as well, and he smiled and said, "Of course, naturally it was great."

Hearing this, Cedric sat in the seat opposite Link without waiting for an invitation, slightly straightened his face and said, "We have a new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor this year, you know about this, right?"

"Lockhart, right?" Link rolled his eyes and said, "He's so high-profile, I'd bet half of Hogwarts already knows."

"Then do you know what kind of person he really is?"

Cedric's words surprised Link a bit, because Cedric's expression was not the kind one shows when discussing a new professor with curiosity, but rather a meaningful one.

And considering Cedric's status, he should know a bit about Lockhart's deeds behind the scenes.

So after thinking for a bit, Link understood Cedric's meaning. Link chuckled and gave Cedric a similar look and said, "Ah, of course I know. Whether it's what's on the surface or what's behind the scenes, I know it all."

"Is that so? Then I'm relieved."

Cedric clearly breathed a sigh of relief, then took a slightly old-looking book from his luggage and pushed it in front of Link, saying, "Since you already know what kind of person Lockhart is, then you should know he basically won't be able to teach us anything. Take this. Although self-study is inefficient, it's still better than having nothing."

Hearing Cedric's words, Link looked down at the book on the table and clearly saw the title "Intermediate Guide to Defense Against the Dark Arts."

Not only that, after flipping through it, Link found it was densely filled with neat notes.

This discovery surprised Link. Because in some sense, this kind of old book was even more precious than new ones. Cedric must have put in a lot of effort to get this.

Thinking of this, Link felt quite moved and smiled as he said to Cedric, "Then thank you very much, Cedric."

"No need to say thank you between us, this is something I should do."

Cedric's smile became even brighter, but soon he sat up straighter and said to Link, "You'll be choosing elective classes this year, right? Which ones are you planning to pick?"

"Care of Magical Creatures and Divination, probably. These two are the easiest."

"What you said isn't wrong."

Hearing this, Cedric showed an understanding expression. He knew very well that Link wasn't one of those overachievers chasing top grades in all twelve subjects, so this choice was quite normal.

"Did you buy the class books?" Cedric asked again. "Check them, don't end up missing something."

At these words, the expression on Link's face instantly became speechless.

He felt Cedric really resembled a nagging mom right now. But Link also knew, that's just how Cedric was, a person who looked after others.

So Link didn't argue further, and directly opened his bag with the Undetectable Extension Charm and began checking.

However, during this check, something really did turn up. In that stack of thick textbooks, Link found no Divination textbook. What replaced it was actually a copy of "Introduction to Arithmancy Divination."

Link instantly understood what had happened.

It must have been Little Button who confused the Arithmancy Divination book with the Divination book when buying.

"Write a letter," Cedric nodded and said, "Good thing you found out early. Before classes officially start, have your family buy another one and send it to you."

What Cedric said was indeed the best solution at the moment. But upon hearing it, Link shook his head and said, "Forget it. The one who helps me buy books is my family's house-elf."

As soon as Link said this, Cedric immediately understood. Everyone knew what house-elves were like.

If one really made a mistake and found out about it, even if the master didn't punish them, they'd probably choose to self-harm on the spot.

"That really is quite bad," Cedric muttered, "Then what are you going to do now?"

"What can I do? What else? I'll just take Arithmancy Divination instead."

Link spread his hands with some helplessness.

This was really quite unfortunate. One must know, Arithmancy Divination is actually a subject that uses a large amount of data to predict a certain future event, similar to the modern use of big data. Its most common use is in combination with Astronomy to predict weather.

So although it's called "Divination," it has absolutely nothing to do with the mystical, fortune-telling kind. Rather, it's a very "scientific" subject.

But because it is scientific, learning this subject requires extremely high mathematical talent and a huge investment of energy.

Which meant, Link's plans for a laid-back year were once again ruined.

Thinking of this, Link sighed deeply and complained, "Sigh, being a person really is all about suffering!"

Beside him, Cedric chuckled lightly and patted Link's shoulder and said, "It's okay, I also took Arithmancy Divination as an elective. If there's anything you don't understand, just ask me."

"Well, I guess that's the only choice now."
