Lambert, are you really this busy? Why did you have to call now? You'd have been better off not coming at all. Even if you came, you just stood here and couldn't even see your grandfather off for the last time. You unfilial grandchild." Ferguson seized the opportunity to scold Lambert.
"Grandfather." Lambert turned his wheelchair, moved to the window, and grasped his grandfather's hand.
"Let go. To you, everything is more important than your grandfather. If that's the case, then leave. You don't need to handle your grandfather's funeral. We'll give him a grand ceremony. But it's a shame... your child is gone." Jonathan struck a deep blow, knowing Lambert wouldn't retaliate at this moment.
"What did you say?" Lambert suddenly looked up, his cold gaze fixed on Jonathan.
In the next instant, his long arm reached across the bed and grabbed Jonathan by the neck, choking him, and asked, "What did you just say about my child? What happened?"
Ferguson was shocked and took several steps back before rushing forward to grab Lambert's hand. "Lambert, your grandfather just passed away, and you want to kill Jonathan? This is too much. If this reaches the shareholders' meeting, not only will you lose your position as CEO, but you'll have to surrender all your shares too. Let go, quickly."
Seeing his son nearly strangled by Lambert, Ferguson couldn't believe the audacity of this unfilial child.
"Lambert, let go," Ferguson said urgently, raising his hand to strike Lambert's face.
But Lambert was too quick; a punch to Ferguson's chest sent him crashing to the ground.
Lambert loosened his grip on Jonathan's neck, and Jonathan gasped for air, his voice harsh as he spoke in a commanding tone, "Tell me."
"You didn't think of this, did you? Julie's worst nightmare was Mia's child being born. She wouldn't miss this opportunity. It was when I couldn't reach Hannah that I thought of this. If I were you, I would…"
"Get out." Lambert swung his hand violently, sending Jonathan flying against the wall, spitting out blood.
His internal organs felt shattered as he lay on the ground, not daring to make a sound.
Soon, Lambert's people arrived at the hospital. They pushed open the door to the ward and called in unison, "Young Master Lambert, as you instructed."
"Take them downstairs, lock them up, and don't let them meet anyone without my orders. Set up the funeral hall at the old house, transport the body back, and find out where Julie and Hannah are. I want to see Mia within half an hour."
"Yes, Young Master Lambert." The servants responded and dragged Ferguson and Jonathan away.
As they left, Ferguson continued to curse, "You Lambert, so you had everything planned. You were just waiting for grandfather to breathe his last. You won't die a good death."
Before he could finish, one of the servants slapped him unconscious and dragged him out of the hospital.
Lambert ordered his men to take action, searching every hospital in the city. Eventually, they learned of Mia's whereabouts in a hospital in the East District, and they drove there immediately.
A few hours could be enough to destroy any evidence.
The child couldn't be saved, and Mia had lost too much blood. The doctor carried the barely alive infant as Jennifer rushed to the scene. The baby cried twice, then fell silent—no breath, no sound.
"Is the child dead?" Jennifer stared wide-eyed, looking at the tiny form, incredulously asking the doctor.
"Madam Gu, the child was only seven months old, and the young lady's health was already poor. The child had been affected several times before birth, and it was beyond saving." The doctor removed his mask and handed the baby to a nurse behind him. Then, he turned to Jennifer. "The young lady's condition is dire, what do you think…?"
"What does it matter to me if she lives or dies? It was Lambert who didn't save her. As her husband and father, where is he in this critical time?" Jennifer's hope was gone, and she turned her frustration onto Lambert, blaming him entirely.
Outsiders, unaware of the internal matters of the Wenshte family, naturally believed Lambert was incompetent.
Jennifer, feeling defeated, sat on a chair in the corridor, her head down, planning how to handle Lambert, the shareholders, and the will of the old master and Robert Wenshte. She had no leads.
Mia was wheeled out of the ward and taken by a male doctor. The doctor, wearing a mask, pushed Mia into the elevator.
"Mia." It was Daniel. He held Mia's wrist gently, calling her name.
The sheets were stained with blood, and she was completely drained, the anesthesia still lingering. She had no response.
Daniel took her out of the hospital and arranged for a flight abroad, performing surgery on her in the car on the way to the airport. If not for his medical expertise and the blood bags he had prepared after hearing about Mia's accident, she would have died.
When Lambert arrived at the hospital, only Jennifer was sitting in the corridor, covering her temples. The surgery room door was wide open, but there was no sign of Mia.
"Where is she?" A subordinate pushed a wheelchair and stopped in front of Jennifer. Lambert grabbed her shoulders, his grip so tight it felt like he was crushing her bones.
"She's dead. The child is gone too. Lambert, if you truly feel guilty about Mia, take care of William. He's in critical condition right now." Jennifer tried to shift the blame again, making Lambert responsible for William's fate, whether good or bad.
William had simply fallen down the stairs, sustaining a head injury that caused massive bleeding and fainting. Julie and Hannah assumed he was dead, which is why they didn't care for him. Jennifer's people later found out he was still alive and rushed him to the hospital.
"Where's the body? She's dead, where's her body?" Lambert asked urgently for the first time, like a wild beast, gripping Jennifer and not letting go.
"Daniel took her. The baby's body is still here. You should go see it. This is what Mia wanted. She told me before she died that she never wanted to see you again, so I didn't stop it. Lambert, your relationship with Mia is over. Didn't you always think Mia was unnecessary? Well, now she's dead, and you won't even get to see her body. It's for the best, right? Out of sight, out of mind." Jennifer struggled free, playing the role of the compassionate mother, patting his shoulder to comfort him.
She wanted Lambert to quickly get over Mia's death so she could arrange a marriage for him, ensuring his child would be born. Only then could she secure her position as the head of Wenshte Group, and Mia's life or death no longer mattered.
Jennifer knew that the male doctor who had taken Mia was Xiang Chen, deliberately not blocking him.
"Find her. Dead or alive, I must see the body. She is Gu family's wife, and even in death, she must be buried in the Gu family's ancestral grave." Lambert gritted his teeth, the words coming out through clenched jaws.
His subordinates immediately set off to spread the orders.
Lambert's people scoured every corner of the city, but still couldn't find Xiang Chen.
Where could he have hidden the body?
The news spread quickly, and people finally realized that Lambert wasn't powerless; he had been hiding his strength all along. Even Jennifer, who controlled the Gu family, couldn't mobilize her staff to search the entire city in such a short time.
He had already planned everything. It was just a matter of timing.
