The shadowy beasts in front of them was slowly, but surely, closing in. They moved like smoke, twisting and twisting until they became something solid.
He felt the seed pulse stronger, as if notifying him of its existence. But it was unnecessary, the seed was the only thing in it mind at moment, and then, roots spread from his chest, weaving into the city's veins.
The woman pointed at the shadows.
"Those are the forgotten, pieces of people the they want to forget, and they want to consume you, to drag you into oblivion."
"But why me?" he asked, voice raw.
"Because...B—Because...I don't know..." The woman replied with a worried expression, "But you have to have a connection with the fracture in the sky for them to be chasing you."
"Fracture?" He asked, confused.
The woman, dumbfounded, asked, "Did you not see the fracture in the sky when you were running from the shadowy beasts before?"
"I don't know, I was too focused trying to survive!" He hissed, eyes whitening.
The woman laughed, "Enough of that, they're coming."
The shadowy beasts lunged. But the woman was faster, she dashed, slicing two beasts heads, she jumped, slashing downwards, cutting a beast in half. A beast lunged behind her, but she noticed and ducked, using her legs as propellers, she dashed to the beast, before it could even land, it was already sliced to bits.
He stumbled back, but the roots inside him flared. Two roots appeared from his shoulders, three beasts dashed towards him, but his roots were already on the move, his right root lunged drilling a hole through one of the beasts. One beast leaped and aimed straight for his head, but his left root slapped the beast, head gone, and blood spilled everywhere. The last beast, legs shaking, tried to run a way, but before he could even reach the door, it's head was already on the floor. The woman was so fast, the beast didn't even notice it was dead.
"How are you feeling?" She asked, sheathing her sword.
He gasped, heart hammering, "This power… where does it come from?"
The woman smiled, her mirror armor shimmering, "It's from the seed I gave you."
Curious, he asked, "Where did you get this seed from."
Her face turned from a smile, to a solemn look, but she went back smiling again, "I got it from a very important person."
"Where are they now?" He asked, roots retracting.
She smiled even brightly, "On a journey."
"That great." He replied, smiling as well.
Suddenly, the ground trembled, a deep rumble echoed below.
The woman's eyes darkened, "They are coming."
The crack in the sky widened, a jagged tear splitting the city's breath, from it, spilled creatures, neither shadow nor light, but something worse, their eyes was burning with hunger.
He clenched his fists, feeling the seed's power pulse like a living thing.
The woman drew her blade, "Stand with me."
He nodded, fear and fire blazing inside.
This lost city was no longer just a prison, it was a battlefield.
And he was a reluctant soldier.
