Chapter 17 - Trial of the Weightless Soul

The moon was not silent.

It sang.

Not with sound—but with intention. And Lin Wei, floating above Earth, heard every note of its ancient hymn.

He stepped forward across the moonlit staircase, each footfall reverberating in time and memory. Below him, the Earth pulsed. Above him, the unknown expanded.

And ahead—the Gate of the Architect.

The Gate Between Realities

The silver gate was not metal. It was made of promises never kept and questions never asked. Carved into it were twelve names:

Bo Ren

Zhang Xinyi

Lin Wei

…and nine blank spaces.

Wei reached out.

System Notice: Architect Pathway Confirmed.Initiating Trial of the Weightless Soul.Caution: Physical laws suspended. Emotional weights enforced.

The gate opened.

Wei stepped through.

The Realm of Echoes

He fell—not downward, but inward.

Into himself.

He landed in a memory.

Not his own.

It was a war-torn battlefield. A city turned to ash. And at the center of it, a young Bo Ren knelt beside a dying boy.

Bo Ren cried, "Why did karma let this happen?!"

The boy—his brother, perhaps—smiled. "Because karma isn't God."

Bo Ren screamed.

And the entire world shattered like glass.

Wei blinked.

Now he stood on the rooftops of his own childhood. The night his mother vanished. The night he first held the Infinite Card.

A voice spoke beside him.

Bo Ren.

But not as a man. As an echo.

"You remember the pain," Bo said softly.

Wei stared at the image of himself, young and helpless. "I remember being powerless."

Bo Ren nodded. "And I remember rejecting that."

Three Questions of the Void

The echo faded, and Wei stood in a white chamber with no floor, ceiling, or walls.

Only three doors appeared.

Above them, words formed:

To reshape reality, answer:

What is value?

What is justice?

What is sacrifice?

Wei approached the first door.

1. What Is Value?

Inside was a vast market.

People screamed, sold, traded, stole.

A man held out a bag of gold to Wei. "Save my daughter!"

A woman cried, "Take my youth, buy my family's safety!"

Wei shook his head. "Value is not trade."

The world blinked.

He saw a farmer give seeds to a stranger.

A child offer food to a beggar.

And finally, his father working two jobs just to pay for Wei's first school uniform.

Wei whispered, "Value… is what you give when no one's watching."

The door vanished.

2. What Is Justice?

The second room was a courtroom.

A thief stood trial.

His crime? Stealing bread.

The crowd demanded punishment.

The judge agreed.

Wei stood and spoke, "Let me ask—why did he steal?"

"His children were starving," said a voice.

Wei stepped down. Took off his coat. Offered it to the thief.

The judge asked, "And what of the law?"

Wei said, "The law measures action. But justice measures need."

The door vanished.

3. What Is Sacrifice?

This room was dark.

A figure sat in chains.

It was Li Mei.

Her mouth was sewn shut.

Wei ran forward.

A voice boomed:

"Free her. And you take her burden. Her memories. Her pain. Her failures."

He didn't hesitate.

He ripped the chains away.

He screamed as memories poured into him:

Her exile.

Her lost brother.

Her guilt for killing her own mentor in self-defense.

Wei fell to his knees.

Tears flowed.

But he stood up.

Because he understood now.

"Sacrifice is not about loss," he said. "It's about love."

All three doors shattered.

And a new one opened.

The Black Palace

Wei stepped into the final realm:

A palace forged from shadow.

Bo Ren waited at the center, seated on a throne that pulsed with the heartbeat of karma itself.

"Impressive," Bo said. "Few complete the Trial of the Weightless Soul. You passed. But did you learn?"

Wei said nothing.

So Bo stood.

"You see the system is flawed. You know karma isn't fair."

Wei nodded. "Because it can't measure intention."

Bo raised his hand. "Then help me break it. Burn it all down. We'll rebuild something better—without karma. Without fate. Pure will."

Wei's card glowed.

Warning: Choice Point Reached.Option 1: Merge with Bo Ren. Begin Karma Purge Protocol.Option 2: Challenge Bo Ren. Defend the karma engine.Option 3: Rewrite karma itself. Risk catastrophic paradox.

Wei looked at his card. Then at the ring from Xinyi.

He closed his eyes.

And chose Option 3.

Karma Rewrite Initiated

The room broke apart.

Time split.

Across the world, people paused.

A mother chose forgiveness over vengeance.

A politician confessed a lifetime of bribes.

A dying man laughed instead of crying.

Wei stood in the center of the multiverse.

And rewrote one line:

Karma now includes intent.

Everything shimmered.

Changed.

Balanced.

But not equally.

Meaningfully.

Aftermath – Earth, 24 Hours Later

Wei returned to Earth.

The team waited.

Jude: "You're alive?"

Wei smiled. "Better. I'm rewritten."

Noor stared at her tablet. "The karma metrics just… stabilized. All over Earth. Crime's down. Philanthropy spiked 300%."

Takeshi blinked. "What the hell did you do?"

Wei looked at them and said:

"I didn't save the world. I just made it fair."

Post-Credit Scene – The Zeroed One's End

Bo Ren sat alone in the palace of nothing.

He smiled as he faded.

"Maybe… this time… he got it right."

And then he was gone.

But in his place, something new was born.

A child.

Eyes of starlight.

Laughter of freedom.

A new karma guardian.

Not bound by the past.

But built by choice.
