Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: Destroying the Base

Marcus was fully armed as he controlled the captured Hydra leader's body, heading straight toward the Hydra base.

Shortly after he left, Bucky rushed to Marcus's farm wearing the combat uniform Howard had made for him and carrying two rifles.

When he saw Hydra soldiers' bodies scattered across the ground, Bucky's heart raced. He frantically called out across the property.

"Marcus! Marcus!"

His shouts received no response, which made Bucky increasingly uneasy. He feared Marcus had been captured by Hydra and might be transformed into a Winter Soldier like himself.

When he reached the door of Marcus's house, a note caught his attention.

"Howard, please stay safe for the next few days. I need to leave for a bit. There are some things I have to deal with. If you need anything, Bucky can help you out!"

Reading the message, Bucky's anxiety subsided.

"So Marcus wasn't captured, but where is he going?"

He knew Marcus's target must be a Hydra base, but their facilities were deeply hidden. Even he, a Winter Soldier who had been used as Hydra's weapon, didn't know the locations of all their bases.

Tucking the note into his pocket, Bucky began cleaning up Marcus's farm, loading all the dead Hydra agents into the pickup truck he'd driven over.

"I need to notify Howard, and we have to deal with these bodies!"

Looking at the truck bed full of corpses in the rearview mirror, Bucky started the engine and drove toward Howard's farm.

After leaving his property, Marcus headed straight for the Hydra base. The vehicles left behind by the attack team conveniently became his transportation, and he drove directly to their facility.

Inside the Hydra base, a man with an officer's insignia was reporting to a figure on a screen.

"Sir Whitehall, I just received word that our team is on their way back. I believe it won't be long before that man is brought here!"

"Excellent... No matter how powerful he might be, he's no match for that unit. Soon he'll become a sharp weapon in my hand!"

Whitehall was thoroughly satisfied with the situation, his confidence growing with each update from the officer.

It wouldn't be long before Marcus would fall into his hands and be brainwashed into becoming their newest asset.

Beep... beep...

After a sharp alert sound, the officer's eyes lit up. The subject of their discussion had arrived!

Marcus drove a Hydra vehicle through multiple checkpoints using the captured leader's face and credentials, making his way deep inside the base.

"Why are you alone? Where are the others?" The officer frowned as he questioned him. The regular soldiers might be expendable, but Sir Whitehall's special forces were invaluable.

Marcus, still controlling the leader's body, smiled as a strange double-layered voice emerged from the man's mouth.

"Them? I killed them all."

The moment he finished speaking, massive amounts of void energy exploded from the leader's body. The Void Reverberation burst through its human disguise and materialized fully within the Hydra base.

Seeing the Void Reverberation emerge from the man's body, the officer pointed at the strange armor and shouted: "Kill him!"

Rat-tat-tat-tat!

The entire base erupted with gunfire. Even rocket launchers were deployed against Marcus as they tried to bury him beneath their firepower.

Facing attacks from all directions, Marcus leapt into the air, void energy surging at his fingertips.

"Void Grip!"

Tendrils of void energy stretched from dimensional cracks, snaking toward various weapons throughout the room.

The void tendrils seized several Hydra soldiers' weapons and suspended them in the air around Marcus.

Pffft!

A beam of energy shot from one of the captured weapons, piercing a Hydra soldier's body. Then all the floating weapons activated simultaneously, turning against their former owners.

Marcus raised his hand and pointed at a Hydra soldier. As fragments on his right hand began to float, void energy gathered at his fingertips.

"Accusation!"

The space around the targeted soldier began to distort as a crack emitting void energy opened. Soldiers near the crack became contaminated with void energy and turned on their comrades.

As one of the three lost skills of the Void Reverberation, Accusation could corrupt people with void energy, placing them under Marcus's control. Now those Hydra soldiers were fighting for him.

The sudden betrayal created chaos in the Hydra base. The remaining loyal soldiers kept their distance—no one wanted to die at the hands of their former allies.

Marcus had no such concerns. He raised his hand again and pointed at the officer.

"Those powered agents were quite interesting. I liked them very much!"

"Deny!"

As the words left his mouth, a torrent of void energy surged down his arm, releasing a concentrated beam of light toward the officer.

When the officer saw Marcus raising his hand, he had already begun retreating, hiding behind several Hydra soldiers as human shields.

He had expected Marcus would turn these soldiers against each other as before, but instead, Marcus's fingertips projected a direct energy beam.

The beam's power exceeded the officer's expectations. It penetrated his chest despite the numerous armored soldiers in front of him, as if they were made of paper.

After dealing with the officer, Marcus turned toward the remaining forces. There were still many soldiers left, and killing them one by one would be inefficient.

"Void Purgation"

The Void Reverberation leapt into the air as fragments of energy burst from his body along with void energy. All the soldiers surrounding Marcus were reduced to ash in an instant.

Marcus, now resembling an energy skeleton, walked methodically through the base.

Most of the Hydra soldiers had perished in the Void Purgation. Only those guarding more distant sections of the base remained unharmed.

Marcus held the Tiger shotgun in one hand as he began searching the facility.

The Hydra base was heavily secured, with access control systems at almost every checkpoint. Unfortunately for them, such barriers meant nothing to Marcus and his Tiger.

A heavy security door blocked his path. Marcus aimed and pulled the trigger twice. Two shotgun blasts rang out almost simultaneously. The reinforced door was shredded by the Tiger's shells and collapsed with a single kick from Marcus.

Behind the gate was a secret warehouse. In the center sat a piece of gleaming metal.

"Vibranium?" Marcus raised his eyebrows as he read the label. "Hydra has quite the collection of treasures, even something like this!"

He knew the origin of vibranium well, which was precisely why he was so surprised. After all, vibranium rarely left Wakanda's borders, let alone in such a substantial piece as the one before him.

This was a valuable find, and Marcus wasn't about to leave it behind. Gripping the vibranium in one hand, he continued exploring the base.

After fighting his way through more guards and corridors, Marcus entered a room filled with screens. In the center was a massive display showing a shadowy figure.

"Who are you?" the figure asked, his tone solemn.

"You mean me?" Marcus, still in his energy skeleton form, pointed at himself. "You'll find out soon enough. I'm going to become Hydra's worst nightmare!"
