Cherreads

Chapter 12 - [12]

'It won't be long now.' I think as

night has completely fallen now, and the rain is falling in drenching sheets on the roofs and hoods of the Explorers, which are slowly making their way past the paddocks on their way back to the visitor's center.

I find myself staring out of the window, lost in thought, hoping my cute little Little One is safe, while I grab my over the shoulder messenger bag and pull out my thermos/canteen.

A couple tender preserved sticks of teriyaki beef sticks and offer one to Tim who takes it gratefully, "Thanks Alec, you're the best." Tim thanks me in a rather over the top manner, while Lex makes a disgusted expression, reaching back into my bag. I pull out a granola bar and hand it to her.

"Th-thanks." Lex stutters while an embarrassed flush paints her face, I shrug and take the cap off of my thermos, that functions as a cup, fill it and pass it back to them, "Have to share it." I say to them and they make sounds of acceptance around the food in their mouths.

I release a heavy sigh as we're still stuck in our car…I notice something the other two don't…the head unit with the large screen in the middle of the front console suddenly goes black.

'So it begins.' I think as the suvs jerk to a stop, the lights in both of the vehicles and along the road go out too, plunging all of us into darkness only illuminated by the bright flashes of lightning.

"What'd you touch?!" Lex asks me accusingly, in a snotty but scared voice.

'Wow, okay then…'

"Nothing…did you touch anything?" I ask her back lightly without accusation.

"Sorry, I know you didn't touch anything…everything's gone dark…I just…" Lex apologizes and starts to make an excuse for herself.

"She's afraid of the dark and storms…" Tim says and gets pinched by his sister.

"Ow, worth it!" He cheers and I can't help the amused smirk that makes its way onto my face.

"I really hope your grandfather is just playing a little prank on us…because if he's not…" I murmur just loud enough for the two to hear.

"He wouldn't…"

"He's not like that." Both Tim and Lex finish each other's sentences.

"Something must have broken." Lex says sadly, "We should probably wait here, I'm sure Grandpa will have it fixed in no time." Tim says but me I'm looking at the high power warning lights…that are off.

"Yeah, we probably should…" I murmur, just as the goat baaa's! Looking to the right into the paddock and seeing the same goat that was brought up from the underground earlier, the poor thing is still tethered in the same place, getting rained on.

Suddenly someone knocks on my window and I open the door seeing the man standing there in the pouring rain, "You guys alright?" Dad asks, showing he's not as uncaring towards whether or not kids are scared like he was in the movie.

"Yeah, we're fine dad, but get in or get back to the other Explorer, don't want you catching a cold."

Dad lets out a bark of laughter, "Alright, alright…you look after them Alec." Dad says as he claps his hand on my left shoulder before racing back from our car to the rear car.

Lex leans over me from the backseat, her firm left breast pressing against my shoulder as she grabs the walkie to a cb radio that I didn't notice, "Darn the radio's out too!" Lex's breath hits my skin and I feel goosebumps rising.

"Now, I'm starting to get worried." Lex murmurs in my ear.

"Hey everything's alright…there's nothing to be scared about…it's just a little hiccup in the power system." I lie through my teeth to offer the two some comfort.

"Hey, I didn't say I was scared?" Tim shouts from the backseat and sounds offended that I would think he was scared.

"And…I didn't say that I was scared, I said that I'm starting to worry, there's a difference." Lex adds on but there is the slightest of trembling to her voice and it's not anger, as she turns and looks out at the driving rain, of the fence that stands between us and the tyrannosaur paddock.

'She is scared…she recognizes the danger we're in…'

Lex sits back in the backseat to wait, Tim being bored, sits upside down in the front seat and watches as rain drums down onto the roof.

'Okay, this is all very monotonous…where my thrills at?!' I wonder as Lex pushes Tim's

legs up, making him swing somehow and land with his feet on the floor of the Explorer.

"Ouch, watch it dino brain!" Lex yells at Tim softly and hits him with her hat as he climbs into the back seat and moves past her.

Tim hangs over the backseat and makes a sound of wonder as he finds something in the emergency kit behind the back seat and sits up abruptly, holding the night vision goggles.

"Cool, night vision goggles Tin." I say to the kid who lets out a gasp of wonder, puts the goggles on and looks out of the rear window.

"Whoa…" Tim gasps.

"See if you can't find a pair for Lex and I." Tim ignores me as he continues to stare out the back window of the Explorer, he starts kicking his legs back and forth in the air, but suddenly stops.

He feels something…I feel it too, Tim pulls off the goggles and turns back, towards the front seat, and moves fully into the back seat with

Lex who is flapping her hat back and forth using it as a fan.

The car starts to tremble, there are small booming sounds…footsteps,

"Alec…Lex…did you feel that? Can you feel that?" Tim asks, his voice trembles, but Lex doesn't answer.

Tim leans over to the front passenger seat and sets down the top to my thermos that has a bit of water left in it on the dashboard. He watches the water in the metal cup vibrate in concentric circles…then it stops, before it starts again this time much more intensely.

"M-Maybe it's the power trying to come back on." Lex murmurs though it's easy to tell that she's not at all convinced that is what's happening.

"Guys…don't look where the goat was…" I mutter…but they both look.

"What is that?" Lex asks with a tremor in her voice.

A loud bang sound comes from the roof, and even though I was expecting it I still jump, along with Lex and Tim…but Lex screams as she looks up at the plexiglas sunroof of the Explorer, but Tim quickly claps his hands over her mouth, I look up and see the bloody, disembodied leg of a goat.

"This is where the fun begins." I joke and though I feel primal fear and worry for my new Dad, Tim and Lex…I can't help the smile that makes its way onto my face.

Because I also see a massive animal's claw, gripping the cables of the "electrified" fence, I can see the Tyrannosaurus rex, Rexy stands maybe twenty-five feet high, forty feet long from nose to tail, with an enormous, boxlike head that must be five feet long by itself.

The remains of the goat hangs out of

the rex's mouth, it tilts it's head back and swallows the animal in one big gulp.

Tim removes his hand from Lex's face as she starts to hyperventilate, "What do we do? What do we do? What do we do?!" She asks in a panic.

"Just breathe Lex, everything will be okay…I won't let anything happen to you or Tim." I tell her and as slowly as possible crawl into the backseat and then the cargo area opening the emergency kit and taking out three emergency road flares.

Lex lets out a muffled scream as she

watches, the fence begins to buckle, its post collapsing into themselves, the wires SNAPPING free.

I open the rear hatch of the Explorer as the "DANGER!" sign smacks down onto the hood of our Explorer, I watch as the entire fence comes down…and the best part is our suv is in front of the brachiosaurus paddock.

I watch in awe as the T-rex steps over the ruined barrier and into the middle of the park road. It just stands there for a moment, swinging its head from one vehicle to the other.

The rex strides around to the side of the car and peers down, from high above both kids are terrified, breathing hard, unable to speak.

Tim looks over his shoulder at me, "Please! Please!" Lex turns to look at me pleadingly as well.

"Both of you…keep absolutely still,

Its vision is based on movement!"

I say to both of them in a murmur.

"You're sure?!" Lex asks me in a quivery whimper.

"Yeah." I say and freeze perfectly still as Rexy angles her head and peers right in through the roof/window.

Rexy's giant yellow reptilian eye is only slightly smaller than the entire pane of glass, Rexy pulls away slightly, before nosing the suv with her snout, making it rock back and forth.

Rexy raises her head, opens her mouth wide and roars, the windows rattle, both Lex and Tim scream, and Rexy strikes.

Smashing her head against the plexiglass roof, knocking the whole frame right out of the roof of the car and down into the vehicle.

The plexiglass falls down onto us but I use my strength to hold it up, Rexy continues to lunge down at us through the hole, snapping her jaws at us.

"Use your legs to help hold the glass, I'm going to draw her away." Lex and Tim do as I say while I roll out of the opened lift gate, as I ignite the flare as Rexy continues to push down, on the glass groans and starts to crack.

"HEY YOU BIG SCALY BITCH, YOUR MOTHER IS A TUCAN, AND YOUR DADDY IS A TADPOLE!!!" I shout while waving the flare back and forth over my head.

Rexy raises her head just enough to take the pressure off of Tim and Lex, and then she roars, so loud my teeth vibrate, she begins walking around the Explorer.

Alan Grant and Malcolm watch in horror as the Tyranasouras raises its head slightly to look at Alec, and roars.

"Oh my God, what's he doing?!" Malcolm asks in awe and fear.

"He's trying to save the kids, we gotta do something." Alan says his concern, pride and anger at his stupid idiotic son.

"Wh-what, What can we do?" Malcolm asks as his voice trembles.

"There's gotta be something…" Alan says as he climbs over the front seat, into the back and he starts tearing it apart searching and finds a metal case, he opens it, finding flares, he grabs one and moves quickly back to the driver's seat and opens the door.

Malcolm sighs, crawls into the back and grabs a flare too, before returning to the front seat.

'Come on you big beautiful scally death machine, come at me!' I think, and Rexy starts to accelerate. I spin on my heels and begin to run, only to see Dad trying to get out of his Explorer to help me and the kids.

"STAY IN THE TRUCK!" I shout and my dad starts to ignore me but Malcolm grabs his arm to stop him.
