Chapter 21 - Chapter 21

The Waltz in a Whisper & A Vampire's Claim - The final notes of the waltz melted into the air like candle smoke. Ariana stood breathless in Lucian's arms, her hand still in his, her chest rising and falling with silent confusion. Around them, applause scattered like falling petals. But in that single heartbeat… only he existed. Lucian whispered against her ear, "You dance beautifully, even when your heart protests. But tell me, Ariana… what does your soul say?" Ariana didn't answer. Couldn't. His nearness made the edges of her thoughts blur. Her hand trembled slightly in his. And then—before the crowd could blink—he moved. Quiet and wicked, Lucian said, "I think it's time we left this dull ball behind, don't you?" In a swirl of shadows—silent, quick as breath—Lucian vanished from the floor, taking Ariana with him. One heartbeat they stood in the ballroom, the next…

Lucian's Room – Velvet and Darkness - They reappeared in a lavish chamber draped in black velvet and deep crimson. Candles lined the walls, flickering like silent witnesses. The moonlight slipped through tall stained-glass windows, painting her face in fractured colors. Ariana stumbled back, "Why do you always take me like this?" Lucian walked toward her slowly, like a shadow slipping over the floor. "Because the world steals you from me when I wait too long." He stopped inches before her. His voice lowered, softer than silk. "You didn't resist the dance tonight. You followed me, even if your pride stayed behind." Ariana's lips parted. Her heart was a war—Rowan's love, her father's dream, Lucian's pull. And her own weakness for the boy who should have been her nightmare… but now haunted her in other ways. "I don't know what's happening to me…" she whispered. Lucian raised a hand to brush a lock of hair from her cheek. "You're falling, little flame. Whether into darkness or desire… That part's still undecided." She shivered as his fingers traced her jaw, but she didn't pull away. "If you want me to stay… don't hurt me. Not again," she whispered. "I won't. Not if you're here… willingly," he said quietly. He stepped back. No chains. No threats. Only open space between them—and the tension of two hearts that once hated and feared, now tied by something far more dangerous.

The Midnight Ball in Lucian's Kingdom - The ballroom glittered like a sky of stars turned inside out—crimson chandeliers hanging like captured fire, music curling through the air like perfume. Beautiful princesses giggled softly, their eyes fixed on one boy. Lucian. The vampire prince. Cloaked in black silk, with a dangerous smile and eyes that could melt glaciers. He offered each noble girl a polite nod, a charming grin—but his gaze never lingered. Because the moment she walked in… the room no longer mattered. Approaching Ariana, who stood near a glass pillar, lost in thought, Lucian said, "Careful, my flame. You steal the moonlight with how you look tonight." Ariana turned slowly, eyes meeting his—this time not in fear, but something unreadable. Curiosity? Resignation? Or maybe… something softer. Smirking, he offered his hand, "May I?" Before she could speak, he swept her into the center of the floor. The music shifted, slower, deeper—something meant for two souls who circled danger like dancers in a dream. He pulled her close—his hand at her waist, her heartbeat thundering beneath his fingers. She didn't resist. She let herself sway in his arms. "You didn't even wait for my answer," she whispered. Lucian replied low and teasing, "I already knew it." The crowd watched in awe. Whispers rose like petals around them. The feared prince… and the girl who once escaped him… now moved like shadow and flame. As they twirled, Lucian asked, "You're not afraid anymore, are you?" Meeting his eyes, Ariana said, "...No. Not tonight." He paused—for the first time, genuinely startled. Then he smiled. A slow, dangerous, beautiful smile. One hand gently slid up her back as he leaned in, breath brushing her neck. Whispering, "Then dance with me until the stars forget the sky." And so they danced—until time blurred and the world was nothing but candlelight, secrets, and the heartbeat of something forbidden slowly blooming between them.

The Slipper of Midnight - Ariana's breath caught. Around her, the crowd of vampires clapped, smiled, their eyes glowing faintly with crimson delight—not with malice, but the kind that made her blood run cold. She wasn't afraid of Lucian anymore… but this world, this kingdom, this ballroom of creatures who whispered in shadows—this wasn't hers. Quietly, trembling, Ariana said, "Lucian… we should stop now. Please. I want to go home." He didn't loosen his grip. His eyes searched hers—not cruel, not violent… but possessive. Wanting. Wanting her. Firmly, softly, Lucian said, "No. Just until the ball ends, Ariana. Stay… stay with me." Her heart paused. Because a part of her—traitorous, dangerous—wanted to. But her mind screamed run. In one sudden motion, Ariana pulled away—her dress catching the wind of her turn—and she bolted through the silver-arched hall. Gasps rang out. Her heels clicked fast across marble. Her chest heaved. And then—one heel caught. A glass slipper tumbled from her foot and clinked on the steps. Startled, Lucian cried, "Ariana—!" He ran after her, black cape flowing behind like a shadow chasing the moon. But when he reached the steps, she was gone. All that remained… was the delicate, glowing glass slipper. He bent down, picking it up, his breath uneven. He stared at it—not as a prince with triumph, but as a boy with an ache in his heart. Whispering to the slipper, he said, "You ran from me again, my flame. But this time… I won't wait. You left a piece of you behind… and I will follow it to the ends of the earth."
