Chapter 4 - How this world ends

'This will soon become a barren wasteland, the world will end here if you are not careful.'

'Wha... What?'

Klaus woke up with a burning sensation, aching with pain in every place of his petite body. He had believed someone was talking to him while he was asleep, Klaus attempted to remember what he heard except he could only distantly guess on what could've happened. His eyes turned around to gaze again at his surrounding. An alarm appeared above the door in front of him signalling 8:00 clock.

'Dear! Come for roll call everyone' Shouted the old lady from the floor below

'Quite a loud voice she got considering her age, at this point nothing will even surprise me. Her echoes could be heard coming down the hallway easily miles ahead' Klaus judged in silence.

Arriving downstairs he was greeted by several children of vague similarity of age and appearance to him, they held solemn faces although at the sight of a new child had seemed to dim their mood even further looking strangely focused at his eyes. The old lady had finished checking the roll and started to speak.

'Now now, everybody quiet down'. The room before was already silent with only a few whispers and the modest tap on the wooden table we sat around.

'I am here to introduce our new child, who has been sent by the lord god himself. Granting us thee child, who hath suffered so and endured an important test of faith, longing for someone like us. Our emergence meeting him clearly signals the ending of this tribulation of faith, no longer shall he be stricken with such deeds and will live in heaven on earths surface under god's protection. He will be staying here for the foreseeable future, you should introduce yourself now. What is your name child?'

'My name is Klaus'. Spoke in a short tone, replying in a swift manner.

'Good, Klaus if you would mind would it bother you to familiarise yourself with these friends of yours before we move on?'

He was quite hesitant, and as he counted his choices, it was only a waste of time for him to get acquainted with them. He only planned this to be a short stay before he made up a fully fledged plan to move out and seek hints of his past,

'No ma'am, I wish not to'.

The old lady seemed slightly bothered by the fact, but since she saw he held steadfast to his opinion there was no choice except to move on.

'Well... I respect your opinion Klaus. But please come remind me when you change your mind' The old lady responded in a sombre tone.

'Now then it's time for you to do your Klaus. You will be in charge of making food and cleaning dishes, follow me' The old lady briskly walked across before reaching the kitchen.

She signalled her hand towards different locations of each ingredient, teaching Klaus on how to cook and clean. Mainly focusing on different potato dishes, it took around the whole day before he managed to run back to his room.

'Room Number 14: Klaus'

Klaus entered in a confused daze, as he walked outside to then check the room number again.

'Room number 14?' He had contemplated for awhile looking at in awestruck bewilderment, it was only yesterday where he saw it was clear as day that he was in room number 15. Klaus took a step away to turn his head looking at the hallway seeing that it stopped in his footsteps right next to his dorm. Yet precisely in his first moments in the orphanage it never ended, continuing on for an eternity. The echoes quiet but loud for minutes on end, it bothered him quite much when he was trying to sleep Klaus remembered. Growing suspicion started to spread in his mind troubling him terribly, as all this mystery served indicated that this is going to go wrong. Soon virtually in response to his doubts he could hear faint whispers between the old lady and a stranger outside, getting inside his dorm again a window allowed glances outside peeping at the conversation. The old lady greeted him kindly, gesturing him inside, as the stranger wearing a black coat and shirt, masking himself entertained the idea he was hiding his identity. Klaus realised the footsteps got louder and louder, as he could sense the presence coming upstairs towards his door, as it stopped, Klaus immediately knew he was behind the door, and it opened to showcase the stranger.

'Are you Klaus?' A short question by the man

'Yes, sir, do... you have any problems?', fear could be felt intensely standing in front of huge husk towering over him.

'Good.'

'Sir...?'

Practically at once Klaus replied that burning sensation he felt when he woke up intensified burying him to the ground in a moment's notice. The strangers footsteps now felt much heavier, as each step neared closer to his small body, Klaus's despair grew stronger, and in a fit of desperation lashed onto him punching his gut.

Looking up Klaus saw it made no effect, as a hefty thunk was heard from the impact, the stranger grabbed him by the neck and rapidly choked him until he fainted. He looked towards the old lady once again, and saw her same smile, the same emotion of kindness, directed to him. Ultimately Klaus registered as in enlightenment that she was in one word, crazy, in three words, a crazy fool.

'How could she! How dare she! I've made such a fatal mistake this foolish brain of mine, how could I think she had honest intentions, of course she was crazy! She truly thinks this is a kind act, that delusional maniac!',

as Klaus repeatedly cursed her name directing straight to her, he had finally made a clear decision to hold off any trust to anyone. No matter how kind someone may be, no matter their absolute loyalty, only one time it will take for them to betray you. It is simply too dangerous and inefficient, this had affirmed his ideals although no amount of changing your ideals would make you escape from this situation. He had closed his eyes, and wished luck for his next life accepting his fate here, it was his decision after all that lead him to this devastating end. And he couldn't blame that, his soul dimmed as he felt paralysed in both brain and body fainting landing hard on the wooden ground. In his last moment he looked again, at his surroundings, everything disappeared leaving only him and the two people beside him. The inside of the mansion was gone, and the luxury beds too gone, instead only a hard pillow and a small bucket was what inside his room. It was nothing but an illusion, and he undeniably thought his eyes was only playing tricks on him again. But through this sliver of doubt came a small thought.

'Is this magic?' The last thought the boy had before completely losing consciousness.

'Why does all children feel ungrateful for me bringing them to you? Does he not fear god!' The old lady sighed in disappointment seeing it numeral times.

'The child belongs in god's hand, and who else except such a divine figure like you are going to be able to cleanse him of his devilish impurities. He must know of his sins, cursed by his previous life.'

'Yes. I believe so too.' The stranger smiled revealing his overwhelming intent to her yet she remained oblivious.

' A child with eyes like his must have faced such difficulties, allow me, Richtor, to bless him with god's prayer and for him to follow in faith of god, for he must repent for his eyes.'

In a fit of absolute awe of this stranger, she kneeled in front of him.

'Yes! Thank you so much sir, please, take whoever you want. I wish for every child to be cleansed just like everyone else in the orphanage'

The old lady seemed to adore him, admire him and as he left she gazed in the distance hopeful for Klaus to come back with his purified soul. An obedient child to the word of god and agreeing to socialise with the children.

'Every decision I say is a good one, after all what am I if not a guardian of children, sent to help and guide them to this singular path of salvation' She thought.

Assuring herself of good deeds, heaven must see her in a good light when she passes away, the old lady smiled again knowing with certainty this was the best option.
