Chapter 19 - Chapter 18: Investigation

"You're a wild witch. Now that your talent has awakened, you won't involuntarily recite spells anymore." Horne dispelled her doubts.

Annie heaved a huge sigh of relief. She patted her chest reassuringly and said, "That's good, that's good. I thought I'd keep summoning those monsters from now on."

Her chest jiggled, making Horne's face under his hood flush slightly.

"Before we move on to the next topic, I have a question for you," Horne asked seriously.

"What question?"

"Why did you make those monsters cause destruction?"

This had to be clarified. If Annie did such things just for fun, although Horne wouldn't kill her, he also wouldn't teach her knowledge and would just let her fend for herself.

"I didn't make them cause destruction everywhere. They're completely out of my control except that they won't attack me," Annie said aggrievedly.

Horne was skeptical of Annie's claim. Generally, wild witches could have simple control over the spells they cast. Why was her spell so special?

"Summon one for me to see, and then I'll consider whether to believe you," Horne thought it was more reliable to see for himself.

"Do I really have to summon one? Isn't it too dangerous?" Annie was a bit hesitant. For her, it was already a blessing that those monsters didn't come out on their own. Asking her to summon them herself was really difficult.

"The monsters you summoned couldn't even deal with that nameless loser, let alone me. Summon it with confidence. There won't be any problems," Horne promised.

"Okay, I'll try."

Annie agreed. She also wanted to know what was going on with the monsters she summoned. She stood still for a while, concentrating, and then asked Horne with an awkward smile:

"Um, how do I summon it? I've never summoned one by myself."

"..."

Horne was speechless. This girl really knew nothing:

"Didn't you have a spell when you were forced to summon before? Concentrate and recite those spells, and the monster will appear naturally."

"Okay, I understand!" Annie nodded firmly.

She concentrated and began to recite the spell.

She had recited this spell countless times, but those were not done of her own will. So this was the first time she was reciting the spell.

It was very difficult for her. The spell was very difficult to read smoothly, but she still recited it word - for - word without a mistake.

Although it was her first time reciting the spell, she didn't mispronounce a single syllable.

Because at the moment when a spell was successfully cast, the spell of all magic would be engraved on the soul by an invisible force and could never be forgotten, even if one lost their memory due to a head injury!

This was the case for both wild witches and those taught by Douglas.

Annie's voice echoed in the empty room. As she finished the last syllable, a magic circle made entirely of magic power appeared on the ground in front of Annie!

Horne looked at the magic circle in disbelief. It was the first time he had seen a magic circle outside the Sea of Consciousness!

As the magic circle took shape, a black paw reached out of thin air from the space above the magic circle!

Then a monster the size of a wolf - dog jumped out of the void!

Its four limbs were black, and the fur on its head, back, and all the way to its tail was pure white. Its overall appearance was like a honey badger, but much larger than a wild honey badger.

You know, a normal - sized honey badger was already quite troublesome. Now this honey - badger - like monster the size of a wolf - dog was very dangerous!

At least it was very dangerous for ordinary people.

The monster turned around and glared at Annie, then fixed its gaze on Horne. Its small eyes were full of ferocity. The way it looked at Horne was the way a wild beast looked at its prey!

After just a few glances, the monster suddenly pounced on Horne. Annie covered her mouth in horror.

Horne calmly stretched out his hand and gently patted the approaching monster. Pale blue electric arcs danced all over the monster's body. The monster let out a wail, foamed at the mouth, and fainted on the ground.

Based on his experience with the caterpillar - like monster last time, Horne knew that these seemingly ferocious monsters were not as tough as they looked. So he didn't use a more powerful spell but the almost non - lethal Thunder Touch.

Horne squatted beside the fainted monster and began to study it.

After watching the whole casting process, Horne generally believed Annie's words. Annie simply couldn't control this monster. Except for not harming Annie, the monster acted entirely on instinct. Annie had no control over it.

Horne yanked out a wisp of hair from the monster's head. The silver - white short hair in Horne's hand gradually faded in color and finally disappeared completely.

It seemed that anything that left the monster's body would disappear! However, the monster's body seemed to be a real, tangible creature, which puzzled Horne greatly.

After studying for a while, Horne found that the monster was also disappearing. It wasn't dead but was vanishing. It seemed that as long as the monster lost consciousness, it would disappear, not just when it died.

After a short while, not even a single hair of the monster remained. Horne still had many doubts, but Annie was no longer suspected of deliberately summoning monsters to kill people.

"Can you read?" Horne asked Annie.

"I know a little," Annie said softly. Her father had made great efforts to educate her. He was counting on his daughter to find a good husband, so of course he was meticulous.

After confirming that Annie could read, Horne took out several pieces of paper and a pen from his bag and gave them to Annie.

"What are these?" Annie asked in confusion.

"Don't worry about what they are. Just do as it says," Horne said in a low voice. These papers were written by Horne based on the questions that old Douglas had given him when he was a child. Some were about trivial daily matters, and some were simple intelligence and math tests.

If he wanted to invite Annie to join his group, he first had to make sure that Annie was a normal person with normal intelligence and wouldn't be too extreme when dealing with things.

Although Annie didn't know what Horne was asking her to do, she obediently followed instructions. After doing a few questions, Annie frowned.

These things weren't difficult, but the questions were a bit strange. For example, the question "If you bought thirteen pieces of clothing, each costing five copper coins, how much did you spend in total" made her feel like they were treating her like an idiot.

And some questions were even stranger.

Tom's mother was critically ill and needed a silver coin to be treated at the church, but Tom had no money. So Tom stole the money that Jerry had prepared to treat his own mother, which led to Jerry's mother's death. Later, Jerry found out that it was Tom who stole the money and caused his mother's death. How should Tom's behavior be evaluated...

There were many such strange questions on Horne's papers. Annie rolled her eyes while doing them. But although she didn't understand Horne's intention, she still finished all the questions under Horne's supervision in about three hours.

Horne picked up the papers and carefully read through them. He thought Annie was a normal person.

Little did he know that in Annie's eyes, Horne, who came up with those questions, was no longer a mentally normal person...
