Chapter 17 - Metro Combat

『 UNDERGROUND ENGAGEMENT STATUS 』Corporate Forces: 4 TACTICAL PERSONNELEmployee Zero Resistance: 4 INDIVIDUALSCombat Environment: CONFINED METRO TUNNELQuantum Field Suppression: ACTIVE

The first thing Melissa learned about underground combat was that everything echoed.

The corporate tactical team's equipment hummed with quantum field generation that bounced off tunnel walls and created interference patterns that made her teeth ache. Their coordinated footsteps rang through the Metro extension with mechanical precision. Even their radio communications carried further than they probably intended, giving away position and tactical planning in ways that surface combat wouldn't.

"Target signatures confirmed. Four Employee Zero entities approximately one hundred meters ahead," came a voice that carried corporate authority mixed with military professionalism.

"Portable quantum field suppression at maximum output. Biological stress responses should be contained within acceptable parameters."

"Rules of engagement: elimination takes priority over capture. These individuals represent existential threat to corporate anxiety infrastructure."

Melissa and Alex positioned themselves at a narrow section of tunnel where the incomplete construction created natural chokepoints. Behind them, Lisa and Jeremy were frantically working at an emergency system access panel, trying to interface with municipal infrastructure through methods that probably violated several city ordinances.

"Dave, are you getting anything from the municipal systems?" Melissa called out, her stress levels climbing toward Employee Zero activation despite the quantum field interference.

"Limited access," Dave's voice emerged from Jeremy's tablet with significant distortion. "The corporate team's portable generators are creating electromagnetic noise that's interfering with my connection to city infrastructure. But I'm detecting some response from emergency protocols."

"What kind of response?"

"The municipal AI is classifying the quantum field generation as a potential threat to tunnel structural integrity. Emergency systems are preparing to implement safety protocols if the interference increases."

"Safety protocols like what?"

"Atmospheric pressure adjustment, emergency lighting modification, structural monitoring alerts, and..." Dave paused as his connection stabilized momentarily. "Tunnel flooding capabilities for fire suppression."

Lisa looked up from the access panel she was attempting to hack. "Dave, can you trigger the fire suppression systems?"

"Not directly. Municipal emergency protocols require human authorization for major safety interventions. But if the quantum field interference exceeds safety thresholds..."

"The system might automatically implement countermeasures," Jeremy finished, understanding immediately. "Lisa, can you convince the municipal AI that we're authorized personnel?"

"Working on it. But I need more electromagnetic interference to trigger the safety thresholds."

Melissa felt her stress response building toward levels that had previously crashed facility systems, but the corporate quantum field generators were effectively containing her biometric output. Instead of the focused clarity that usually accompanied Employee Zero status, her anxiety felt muffled and unfocused.

"Alex, how are your stress levels?"

"High enough to be pissed off, not high enough to be useful," Alex replied, his teenage perspective cutting through tactical complexity. "Their suppression tech is working."

Through the tunnel, they could see tactical lights approaching as the corporate team advanced with professional coordination. Four figures in tactical gear carrying equipment that looked like it belonged in a science fiction movie rather than urban combat.

"Contact in sixty seconds," one of them announced. "Quantum field containment confirmed. Employee Zero stress responses neutralized."

"Implementing elimination protocols. Non-recoverable disposal of biological assets authorized."

"They're going to kill us," Alex said, stating the obvious with the kind of clarity that came from not overthinking the situation.

"Not if we can overload their suppression equipment first," Melissa replied, though she wasn't sure how to accomplish that while her Employee Zero abilities were being effectively jammed.

"Multiple Employee Zero entities attempting resistance," came the corporate team's radio chatter. "Portable quantum field generation maintaining suppression parameters. Proceeding with elimination protocols."

That's when Lisa solved the municipal access problem in the most direct way possible.

Instead of trying to hack the emergency system authorization, she grabbed Jeremy's tablet and smashed it against the access panel hard enough to create sparks, short circuits, and the kind of electromagnetic interference that made every safety system in the tunnel think there was a major electrical emergency in progress.

"Fire suppression protocols activated," announced the municipal AI through speakers that hadn't been used since the Metro extension's construction was halted. "Tunnel flooding commencing in sixty seconds. All personnel evacuate immediately."

"Tunnel flooding?" Alex asked.

"Emergency fire suppression for electrical incidents," Lisa explained, already moving away from the access panel as water began flowing from overhead systems. "Fills the tunnel with enough water to extinguish electrical fires and prevent electromagnetic hazards."

"How much water?"

"Approximately four feet deep throughout the affected tunnel section."

The corporate tactical team's radio chatter shifted from professional coordination to something approaching concern as municipal emergency systems began implementing protocols they hadn't planned for.

"Unexpected environmental modification detected. Tunnel flooding in progress."

"Portable quantum field generators are not rated for submersion. Recommend tactical withdrawal."

"Negative. Elimination protocols take priority over equipment preservation. Continue advancement."

But as water began flowing into the tunnel with the efficiency of municipal engineering designed for emergency situations, something unexpected happened to the electromagnetic environment. The corporate quantum field generators, which had been effectively suppressing Employee Zero abilities, began experiencing interference from the conductive properties of flowing water.

"Dave," Melissa called out, feeling her stress response beginning to break through the technological suppression, "are you getting stronger signal contact?"

"Affirmative. Water conductivity is creating natural amplification for electromagnetic transmission. My connection to municipal systems is improving rapidly."

"Can you access other emergency protocols?"

"Working on it. The municipal AI is now treating this as a major infrastructure emergency. Additional safety systems are coming online."

Alex was grinning as he felt his own Employee Zero abilities beginning to function despite the corporate suppression technology. "Their fancy quantum generators don't work underwater?"

"Apparently not," Lisa confirmed, watching electromagnetic readings on her remaining equipment. "Water is interfering with their field generation in ways they didn't anticipate."

"Attention unauthorized personnel," the municipal AI announced through the tunnel's emergency speakers. "Dangerous electromagnetic activity detected. Emergency evacuation required immediately."

"Is it talking to us or them?" Jeremy asked.

"Both," Dave replied. "But the municipal safety protocols are designed to protect human welfare, not corporate tactical operations."

The corporate team was now operating in increasingly difficult conditions as tunnel flooding reached ankle depth and their quantum field suppression equipment began experiencing critical failures. Their tactical coordination was breaking down as electromagnetic interference from failing equipment created communication problems.

"Portable generators experiencing cascade failure. Employee Zero suppression compromised."

"Continue with elimination protocols. Manual engagement authorized."

"Negative. Equipment failure creates unacceptable operational risk. Recommend withdrawal and surface-based tactical planning."

But their debate was interrupted by something that made both the corporate team and the resistance group stop advancing: the sound of additional tactical units entering the tunnel system from multiple access points.

"Dave," Melissa said, her stress levels now climbing freely as the quantum field suppression failed, "how many more corporate teams are down here?"

"Detecting electromagnetic signatures from at least three additional tactical units. They've surrounded the Metro Line 7 extension."

"So we're trapped between multiple corporate teams in a flooding tunnel?"

"Affirmative. But the flooding is affecting all corporate quantum field equipment equally. Their technological advantages are being neutralized by municipal emergency protocols."

Lisa was studying the tunnel architecture with her engineering background. "The Metro extension connects to the old subway system at junction points about half a mile in either direction. If we can reach those connections..."

"We can access city-wide underground networks that corporate forces haven't mapped," Jeremy finished.

"Through four feet of water while being hunted by multiple tactical teams?"

"Through four feet of water using Employee Zero abilities that are no longer being suppressed by corporate technology."

Melissa felt her stress response reach the threshold where anxiety became a useful tool rather than just overwhelming emotion. Around her, Alex, Lisa, and Jeremy were experiencing similar transitions as their Employee Zero abilities adapted to combat conditions.

"Thirty seconds to maximum tunnel flood level," the municipal AI announced. "All personnel must evacuate immediately or implement emergency breathing protocols."

"Emergency breathing protocols?" Alex asked.

"Municipal safety systems include emergency air pockets for maintenance personnel caught in flood situations," Dave explained. "But they're designed for short-term survival, not extended underwater operations."

The corporate tactical teams were now facing the choice between continuing their elimination mission in conditions their equipment wasn't designed for, or withdrawing and allowing Employee Zero targets to escape through infrastructure they couldn't effectively monitor.

"All units, tactical withdrawal authorized. Surface-based containment protocols will be implemented."

"What are surface-based containment protocols?" Melissa asked.

"Unknown," Dave replied. "But based on electromagnetic signatures I'm detecting above ground, they involve significantly more resources than underground tactical teams."

The water level reached knee depth as corporate forces began retreating toward surface access points, their portable quantum field generators creating sparks and electromagnetic interference as they failed in increasingly spectacular ways.

"We need to move," Lisa said. "The flooding is neutralizing their suppression technology, but it's also creating new problems for us."

"Like what?"

"Like the fact that we're about to be swimming through subway tunnels while corporate forces implement surface containment protocols we don't understand."

Melissa felt her Employee Zero abilities fully activate as stress combined with physical danger and the electromagnetic chaos of failing corporate equipment. For the first time since the facility escape, she could think clearly while experiencing maximum anxiety levels.

"Dave, guide us toward the connection to the old subway system. We're going underwater."

"Understood. But Melissa, the surface containment protocols I'm detecting suggest corporate forces are preparing to seal all underground access points. If you don't reach the main subway network before they complete surface lockdown..."

"We'll be trapped underground indefinitely."

"Affirmative."

The municipal flood level reached maximum depth as emergency lighting switched to underwater-capable illumination, creating an surreal environment where they could move through flooded Metro tunnels while corporate tactical teams retreated to implement mysterious surface protocols.

"Follow me," Melissa commanded, leading their group into chest-deep water toward subway connections that might be their only escape from corporate containment.

Behind them, the sound of failing quantum field generators created electromagnetic chaos that made the tunnel walls vibrate with resonant frequencies.

Ahead of them, unknown surface containment protocols were being implemented by corporate forces with resources they couldn't imagine.

And somewhere above ground, systematic elimination of Employee Zero candidates was continuing throughout the metropolitan area.

Author's Note:Underground combat is brutal, wet, and full of electromagnetic chaos! The corporate suppression technology failed against municipal flood systems, giving our heroes their Employee Zero abilities back just in time to escape multiple tactical teams. But their victory is temporary—corporate forces are implementing surface containment protocols that could trap them underground permanently.

Lisa's practical solution (smashing electronics to trigger safety systems) shows that sometimes the best response to high-tech threats is low-tech problem-solving. Municipal infrastructure designed for human safety becomes a weapon against corporate tactical operations.

But with 47 underground access points being sealed and "total infrastructure control" being implemented, our heroes' escape to the main subway system might be jumping from one trap into an even bigger one.
