Chapter 16 - The Prince’s Hunt

The capital simmered with tension in the aftermath of Lord Halrix's disgrace. His trial was scheduled within the week, but whispers already passed through court halls like wildfire: someone had orchestrated his downfall, someone powerful, someone dangerous—and no one knew who.

Behind the veil of dusk, inside the royal solar, Crown Prince Caelan paced with silent fury. The scent of dying embers lingered in the hearth. His golden armor hung untouched near the window, forgotten. Instead, he clutched a folded mask in his hand—the black dragon-winged half-mask worn at the masquerade.

The memory of her haunted him.

"She danced like she owned the room," he muttered to himself. "But vanished like smoke."

He'd interrogated every noblewoman who had attended, reviewed hours of enchanted scrying, and still, the woman in black remained a ghost.

"Who are you?" he murmured again.

He didn't just want to unmask her.

He wanted to know her.

Meanwhile, beyond the capital's watchful gaze, in the mountainous fortress of Blackspire Keep, Seraphina studied a crimson-threaded map pinned to her war room wall. Conspiracies stretched like blood veins across regions, names circled in ink: generals, traitors, informants, spies.

At the far corner, beneath a lock of golden thread, was a name written only once: Liliana.

The child sat quietly by the hearth, sketching with charcoal. She wasn't like the other children Seraphina had once manipulated in court. Liliana didn't beg for approval or attention.

She watched.

And when she drew, her fingers blackened not just from coal—but from the faint scorch of raw, untamed magic.

"You're drawing fire again," Seraphina said without turning.

"It helps me think," Liliana murmured. "And... sometimes it whispers."

Seraphina slowly put down her quill and turned to the child.

"Fire doesn't whisper, Liliana."

The girl looked up, her amber eyes eerily calm.

"This one does."

Moments later, Kaelrith entered through the side door, rain clinging to his dark armor. He dropped a sealed letter onto the table and crossed his arms.

"From the capital. The Prince has deployed three operatives from the Shadow Branch."

Seraphina raised a brow. "So quickly?"

"He's obsessed," Kaelrith said. "Reports say he hasn't left the palace since the ball."

"Then he's looking for the wrong woman." Seraphina smirked. "And I intend to keep it that way."

She stood and walked toward the hearth, cloak trailing like smoke. Her reflection in the mirror above the fireplace flickered, as if uncertain.

Kaelrith's voice followed her. "What are you planning now?"

"To feed the Prince exactly what he wants—a different mystery."

---

That evening, Seraphina took to the city in disguise. Gone was the noble's bearing and elegance. She wore rough wool, a dirtied apron, and a headscarf hiding her hair. No one glanced twice at the merchant's widow who wandered through the lower districts.

She visited taverns, bread lines, even a plague ward—speaking just loudly enough to be overheard.

And then, in a smoky den nestled deep in the slums, she sat beside a pair of drunk informants and whispered just loud enough for one ear to catch:

> "They say the girl survived. The Queen's mistake. She's hidden somewhere up north… maybe Blackspire."

She stood, dropped a silver coin on the table, and vanished into the fog.

By morning, the rumor had wings.

Back at Blackspire, Seraphina watched from her tower balcony as a murder of crows circled above the keep. Rain threatened again, clouds darkening the horizon.

She felt Kaelrith's presence before he spoke.

"You used her."

"I used the idea of her," Seraphina replied coldly. "She's still hidden. Still safe."

"And what if they get too close?"

"Then I teach her to burn louder."

Kaelrith walked beside her, his jaw set. "The Queen buried that girl for a reason. What if she's cursed?"

"We're all cursed, Kaelrith," she whispered. "At least she's useful."

He turned to her then, not with anger, but with something softer. Something raw.

"You keep calling her a tool. But I've seen how you look at her."

Seraphina didn't reply.

Kaelrith stepped closer. "You care."

Silence.

At last, she answered.

"I was ten when they told me I'd marry a man who could kill with a smile. I was thirteen when they used me to poison an ambassador. And fifteen when I realized I'd never belong to anyone but my own survival."

She turned, her eyes wet but cold.

"No one cared then. So if I care now, it's because no one ever did."

Kaelrith said nothing for a long time.

Then: "You married a monster to protect her."

"I married you because you're the only one who sees me for what I am—and doesn't flinch."

That night, Seraphina found Liliana curled up in the reading chamber, clutching her old stuffed wolf.

"Liliana," she said gently. "Do you know what people are saying about you?"

The girl looked up. "That I'm a monster."

"No." Seraphina knelt. "That you might be a princess. That you might change everything."

Liliana frowned. "But I don't remember anything. Just fire. And pain."

"That's enough," Seraphina said. "That's how empires begin."

She placed a hand on the girl's head.

"Starting tomorrow, you begin training."

Liliana hesitated. "So I can fight?"

"So you can survive."

---

In the capital, the rumor reached Prince Caelan by dawn.

He stood in the war council chamber, the scroll in hand.

"A girl," he said aloud. "Fire magic. North Hollow. Hidden after the Purge."

The Queen froze where she stood, a goblet halfway to her lips.

"That's just court gossip," she said too quickly.

But Caelan's eyes were already narrowing.

"You told me no one else survived the culling. You told me your other daughter died."

The Queen's lips thinned.

"Rumors are dangerous things, Caelan."

"Yes," he said softly, gaze burning, "especially when they're true."

Potential Conflict Incoming

Back in Blackspire, Seraphina walked the keep alone, the wind sharp against her face. She stopped at the high tower, staring down at the flames of the forge below.

Her thoughts swirled—of power, of memory, of a child who still dreamed of safety.

She wasn't just fighting to stay alive anymore.

She was building something. A future. A weapon. A girl who would never be powerless again.

And she knew that soon—

The final boss, the Queen, and the Crown Prince would all come crashing into her world.

But Seraphina had chosen her battlefield.

And no one would take Liliana from her.

Not without a war.
