Chapter 3 - Truths And Lies

The clergy group separated and began their tests to check recovery rate of the patients, though a few of them were covertly looking at the three men as they walked and stood in front of the only conscious patient.

The one in the right had a curly black hair with plump body, he had a notebook of sorts in his hands, though it glowed in golden light and a whip tied on his belt, whereas the one in the left a tall figure, he had straight black hair tied to a pony tail and a large golden hammer strapped on his back.

The one in the middle had medium length hair cropped mullet hair style with green locks and vibrant blue eyes, he had a baton length rod strapped on his side and he was glaring daggers.

'I never thought I would see a mullet in medieval era, damn who is his barber. And why is he staring at me as if I had killed his seven generations, eh system?'

[ 'I don't have information on what he is thinking.' ]

'So, you can only read my mind, hmm.'

Because he didn't know what to do, he just wordlessly stared back. To which officer in the middle, who seemed to be the leader, twitched his brows and spoke.

"In case of physical disability, the salute should be performed by lower their heads at 30 degrees for at least couple of seconds; remember it. I am William Oberoi, senior officer in Imperial Investigation Department. We need your account on the tragedy that occurred last night. I advise you to be truthful, lying will not be tolerated. First name, address and what were you doing during the time of attack."

'Wow that's some serious stiffness. But this language translator skill is awesome, while they sound random words to my ears, I can understand them perfectly. Still tragedy huh, now what kind of tragedy can bring an imperial investigator. Judging from the fact that I was buried under the rubble, injuries on the patients and the fact that we are in a makeshift tent, not in some hospital, a large-scale tragedy fire and explosions is more likely, well whatever. Oi, system, what is the name of previous owner of this body.'

[ 'Details of the previous owner are not known. Also, I would like to advise not to ask questions to me in front of these people.' ]

From the corner of his eyes, he could see the chubby officer had squinted his eyes and was already writing something down, even though he has yet to say something. However, the remaining two had no change in expression.

'Mind reading again, no this is a bit vaguer. Or else they would have already noticed that I know nothing about this world during saluting time.'

"I don't know."

That did get a reaction from all of three as the looked into each other and the chubby one wrote it down in his notebook. After a few seconds of thought, officer asked again.

"You don't know any of the three things, right?"

A nod.

"Do you remember anything from yesterday's incident or anything from before yesterday?"

A shake of head.

"Peculiar, but it seems you have lost your memory during the incident. The doctor had mentioned a wound on your head on the report. For now, by which name will you go by?"

"Ronan Richards"

He cocked his head to side as if he had found something very interesting, but spoke in normal tone.

"Okay Roman Richards, rest for now, but if you do remember anything please make an effort to contact us."

With that, the three of them left while talking to each other as there were no more patients left to interrogate.

'What was that, did I mess up in the end? Roman Richards sounds like a common name, especially when he is William Oberoi. Well, System why did you restrict me from speaking to you?'

[ 'Because they could have detected your intention of asking. This world has an energy called ki. When someone masters ki, he or she can know the intention of the another intelligent being before the action is committed. As my existence is hidden to any and all powers, it would seem as if you were asking question in your mind and getting satisfactory results, which could raise suspicions' ]

'Do you think they would have noticed?'

[ 'Surely, nothing could be said, but it is most likely.' ]

'Hmmm…'

Just then a middle-aged nun approached him, wearing a habit which has spotless even in dirt, and spoke.

"How do you feel, son? Still, some discomfort or pain."

"Yes actually, I still have some pain flaring up occasionally in my back and whenever I try to sit, it suddenly spikes."

"That maybe because you had a fracture in spine, such cases are usually incurable, as we were afraid in this case too, but by a miracle your body had already begun healing, so it was easier to fix it. By evening your back should in good shape. By the way lunch would be ready any minute, I would ask someone to deliver it to you."

"It would be much appreciated."

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

William Oberoi with his two companions exited the tents feeling confused about the situation. His instincts told him that the boy had something to do with the tragedy but logic denied the theory.

The tall man beside him, Henry, spoke in his usual heavy voice.

"Something does feel off about him, my ki told me that he had the intention of asking when you asked him about his name, and then he had suddenly become vary. Answers he gave afterwards were just nods and shakes."

"Maybe he just asked himself his name, remember he forgot his whole memory. As for being vary, maybe that's just his nature. We have done some cases where target shows heavy caution. His magical ability was of a just-awakened one and he couldn't even control ki. What do you think, William? You have mastered advanced ki, he should be more than clear to you."

The chubby man, Franz spoke, not seeing anything strange in the boy.

William frowned when started speaking and turned his stride towards Maren Duskvale.

"I am even more confused. From the moment we entered, I saw no signs of recognition in his eyes but that's common, common folks don't really recognize us by our uniform. What interested me was that from the moment we entered, he was studying and his gaze was sharp. It is likely, no I am pretty sure he had deduced our profession by our clothes, posture and the tools we were carrying. That is a sign of high intelligence, so he is educated and highly intelligent. He was rescued from northern part of town, home to lower class and working class; such level of education is rare in even noble's home so far out of capital, not to mention working class. But that can be an exception. Also, the fact he didn't recognize us despite being so educated reinforces that he was being truthful of him losing memory.

My ki told me that he was being truthful while he was answering the rest of questions. He could have had advanced ki control to fool my ki but then he wouldn't have made the slip-up henry mentioned.

Now the only thing that this case had going is the fact that he chose a family name too when choosing a name after losing his memory. Having a family name is a privilege of a noble. The fact that he did it suggests that for him it is quite common to have a second name. This calls for a background check.

Miss Duskvale, may I have a word with you?"
