Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Spikes Trap

Carter looked behind him and saw that the slow-crawling Mutated Prisoner was still at him. It was so slow that even a toddler could outrun it.

Leaving it now would only be a temporary option as it would catch up to him eventually. When Carter would be sleeping or eating, it could ambush him and he wouldn't have any chance to react.

That had always been the trap of the Mutated Prisoner. A different kind of horror compared to Minor Spider. The Minor Spider was fast and deadly. Mutated Prisoner had a completely different type of danger to it. One that could be misled very easily by its slowness.

Carter rolled his eyeballs around, quickly thought up of a fitting plan to destroy the creature.

He turned back to the Infirmary and looked around the room. At the moment, he wasn't inside the Infirmary yet and his feet were standing inside the premise of the prison cell.

To actually think of a way to kill the Mutated Prisoner as Carter was very difficult. The real Carter Caine would have never tried to kill a grotesque monster in the first place. He was not that kind of man. This way of thinking blocked Carter from actually solving the problem.

But he thought that if he considered everything from the gaming aspect, everything became clear. Carter considered himself to be playing a blank character, not playing 'Carter Caine'.

A blank character was a character created from a mod. This character had absolutely no useful skill and a lot of penalties.

Penalties were basically disadvantages that affect the gameplay that a character could have. The armor affecting the Stealth stat was one of those penalties.

Playing a blank character with penalties was actually a speedrun category of its own. The community called it Nuslop run, No-useful-skill-lot-of-penalty run.

Carter observed the floor of the Infirmary. It was built by stone tiles that had a rough, even jagged surface. Some tiles were smoother than others while some looked horrified to walk on. The door connected the Infirmary to the prison cell had five tiles in front of it. All of those tiles and a few in front were smooth while the tiles on the side and the corners of the door were extremely rough.

Carter squatted down as low as possible and lowered his head to the floor. His feet still stayed in the premise of the Prison Cell. The noise of the Mutated Prison was screeching in the back. It groaned like a soulless zombie, which was very fitting when considered the nature of the beast.

In between the tiles of the floor, straight and narrow crevices could be seen. Carter squinted his eyes to look at it even clearer, hovering the torch closed to the tiles. He grabbed a handful of dust and dropped it onto the smooth tiles and rough tiles.

The dust seeped under the crevices of the smooth tiles while staying on top for the rough tiles.

Carter smiled. The Mutated Prisoner had reached him from behind.

"Not so easy!" Carter jumped forward, landing onto a rough tile. Even with the thick soles of his boots, Carter could feel the jagged stone poke into his feet. A very uncomfortable feeling that could make you instinctively jump to the smooth tile.

Carter didn't do that. He turned back and faced the Mutated Prisoner. It entered the Infirmary. Its right foot stepped on the smooth tile right at the door.

Spikes immediately dropped down from the ceiling, piercing through the Mutated Prisoner.

That wasn't the end.

Carter took a deep breath, relaxing his muscles. He was a noob at fighting sure but he at least knew that he needed to be relaxed as possible to avoid injury and guarantee speed. His hours of watching MMA weren't totally useless in the end.

Carter unstrapped the shield on his back and let it drop on the floor. Then he held the spear with two hands. The shield was a perfect counter to the Minor Spider. But to a Mutated Prisoner, the shield was a hindrance.

The Mutated Prisoner growled. Its mouth was full of stinky saliva. It reaches his hands up to grab at the steel spikes and with one swift motion, break the spikes that were piercing through its skull.

"Such a resilient creature. It is a pity that you are so ugly."

The Mutated Prisoner freed its head and now it reached for the remaining spikes to free its body. Carter approached the beast with extreme caution. Even when it was stuck in a trap, he couldn't be careless.

When the beast grabbed the other spikes, Carter stepped right up and lunged the spear at the arm of the beast. He kept one hand on the spear while the other hand freed up and covered his entire face.

The Mutated Prisoner screamed at Carter, its saliva shooting from its mouth and landed on the steel plates on Carter's arm.

Yellow, sticky saliva that was venomous. Everything in this dungeon was venomous. That alone could tell you a lot about the preference of the owner of this place.

The Prisoner screamed even more, sending a mouthful of spit at Carter. He stayed still and didn't flinch, keeping only a small gap looking at the feet of the beast. He couldn't block his entire vision for obvious reasons.

It finally stopped because of its dry throat. Carter swung his arm to the side to get rid of the spit. It was not completely clean but it was sufficient for now.

Carter grabbed the spear by two hands again and pulled it out. The weapon created an open wound on the Mutated Prisoner's large bicep, blood spurts out from the bloody hole. Carter had already prepared for it and used his arms to cover his face, stopping the blood from splashing on him.

In the game, the blood of Mutated Prisoner was never venomous. But this was Darkness and Bloodlust and it meant Carter always expected the unexpected.
