Chapter 11 - Chapter 11:"Hide and seek"

The next day, the school buzzed with its usual chaos—students rushing through hallways, teachers struggling to herd them into classes, and whispers still circulating about the party incident. Zach and his cronies strutted around the gym like they hadn't been turned into human sundaes, which only made Eliza's blood boil more. The memory of the smug grin on Zach's face was enough to make her fists clench. But today, her focus was locked on the gym, nerves buzzing with both excitement and anxiety.

Beside her, Lucifer smirked, holding up a small packet of itching powder and a bottle of hair dye with a wicked glint in his eyes. "Ready to cause some chaos?" he whispered, eyes glinting with mischief.

Eliza rolled her eyes but couldn't fight the grin tugging at her lips. "You're actually evil," she muttered, though the warmth in her voice betrayed her amusement.

"What, me?" Lucifer's smirk widened. "I'm a saint compared to what they deserve."

She snorted softly, giving him a light shove. "Saint, my ass," she huffed, but her grin stayed put.

They moved quickly, slipping into the gym's locker room with as much stealth as two amateurs could manage. Eliza's heart hammered in her chest as she followed Lucifer between the rows of lockers. The air was thick with the lingering scent of body spray and gym socks, and the flickering fluorescent lights did little to calm her nerves.

"This is insane," she hissed, glancing at Lucifer, who was rifling through a gym bag with the focus of a mad scientist. "We're going to get detention for life. Or worse, expelled!"

Lucifer smirked, unfazed. "Only if we get caught. And we won't. Besides, they started it." His tone was so casual, like they weren't seconds away from being busted for a very public act of revenge.

Eliza groaned softly, tugging at her sleeves. "Remind me why I agreed to this again?"

"Because you couldn't resist the idea of Zach walking around with green hair for a week," Lucifer snickered, eyes glinting with trouble.

She snorted, a laugh slipping out before she could stop it. "Okay, you have a point," she admitted begrudgingly, though her eyes were still wary.

Ava, standing guard by the gym door, waved them over with a dramatic eye-roll and a huff. "They'll be back from practice any minute!" she hissed. "So hurry up, criminals."

Lucifer worked fast—switching out shampoo with a bottle of green hair dye, sprinkling itching powder into Zach's hoodie, and loosening the lids on their water bottles just enough to ensure a spectacular spill. The precision was almost alarming, and Eliza found herself staring for a beat too long as he moved, brows furrowed in concentration and that wicked grin never leaving his lips.

She chewed on her bottom lip, eyes darting nervously around the room. "Okay, evil genius," she whispered. "We need to go before—"

Ava's urgent whisper cut through the air. "Guys! They're coming back—now!"

Eliza's stomach plummeted, dread curling in her gut. "Oh no—"

Before she could finish, Lucifer grabbed her hand, pulling her down the narrow aisle of lockers. Her breath hitched as he pushed open the bathroom door, tugging her inside just as the locker room door swung open with a bang.

Her back pressed against the cool tiles, heartbeat hammering in her ears. "You—" she started, but his other hand flew up, covering her mouth gently. "Shh," he mouthed, barely above a whisper. "Unless you want them to find us."

Her heart pounded wildly, breaths shallow as footsteps echoed outside. The air was heavy with the faint scent of disinfectant and old gym socks, and every shuffle of sneakers outside made her pulse spike. They were trapped, backs to the wall, barely a breath of space between them and the door.

Seconds stretched into eternities, the tension wrapping around them, warm and electric. Lucifer's hand slowly dropped from her mouth, but he didn't step back, his gaze flickering down to hers. His fingers were still curled loosely around her wrist, warm and steady, and the closeness made it impossible to think straight.

Outside, Zach's voice echoed through the locker room, cocky and obnoxious. "Man, did you see Lucifer's face yesterday? Priceless."

His friends snickered in agreement, and Eliza's blood boiled, hands curling into the front of Lucifer's jersey without thinking. His eyes flicked down at the movement, smirk faltering for a fraction of a second.

Lucifer's eyes narrowed slightly, jaw tightening at the laughter filtering through the door. For a second, Eliza thought he might storm out then and there, but he just exhaled slowly, shoulders relaxing by force.

"See?" he murmured, voice low and far too smug. "Told you we wouldn't get caught."

Eliza rolled her eyes, trying to ignore the way her hands trembled. "Yeah, yeah, let's just get out of here before they find us," she muttered, her voice shaky.

He just laughed , finally stepping back. "Fine, but you owe me if we get detention," he snickered, eyes glinting.

"Oh, shut up," she huffed back, but relief was already unfurling in her chest as they inched toward the door.

They slipped out of the locker room as quickly and quietly as they could, breaths still coming fast, ears straining for any sign that they'd been caught. Ava met them just outside the gym, one eyebrow raised.

"Seriously? You almost got busted?" she groaned. "I leave you two alone for like two minutes."

Lucifer just shrugged, not looking the least bit sorry. "Relax, we're fine," he said.

Eliza sighed, running a hand over her face, nerves still thrumming beneath her skin. "Never again," she muttered, though the tiny smirk betraying her words said otherwise.

Ava rolled her eyes but couldn't hide her grin. "You guys are the worst," she sighed. "But that was pretty epic."

Eliza couldn't help but laugh, the tension finally slipping from her shoulders as they hurried down the hallway. Maybe they'd get detention, maybe they wouldn't—but for now, she couldn't deny the thrill of payback and the warmth of the two friends at her side.

To be continued....
