Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: Territory Claimed

[Look above you to see the [Tutorial Zone!]]

I glanced up, spotting a giant blue box hovering hundreds of feet in the air.

[Tutorial Zone: Familiar Forest]

Oh, I'm in the familiar forest. This could be really good, or… really bad.

Really good because there are so many different familiars I could use devour on, so I could get a huge variety of skills.

Really bad, because some of those familiars are going to be way stronger than just a Dire Wolf, and because I could run into devils looking for familiars.

I didn't have more time to think about my situation as another quest appeared.

[Quest Alert!]

Conqueror the Familiar Forest

[Beast King] Title

[Tutorial] Completion

…Interesting.

My breathing was slightly ragged as I wiped a trail of blood from my lips. Around me were the bodies of a pack of [Dire Wolf]'s, all of which ranged from level 1-5.

Well, there would have been bodies, but they promptly turned into a blue light and disappeared.

[Quest Update!]

Devour 25 [Dire Wolf]'s in the [Familiar Forest]

[17/25]

Reward:

[Dire Wolf] Line Evolution

Failure:

You will not become stronger.

It had only been a few hours since I woke up in the DxD world, and every quest so far had been related to Dire Wolfs. Those were also the only creatures I'd seen so far, which I was happy about.

I also didn't know what 'Dire Wolf Line Evolution' meant, but I had no other leads of what I should be doing, so follow the quests it is!

However, I was starting to feel tired from hunting for so long. Where am I going to sleep? Should I just climb a tree and hope nothing attacks me?

[Quest Alert!]

Claim a [Territory]

Rewards:

[Territory Newbie] Title

A safe place to rest.

Failure:

You will not get a good nights sleep!

Oh, nice!

The system had been very generous in the amount of quests it was giving, but luckily it had a [Quest Log] feature so I could check them at any time.

I continued walking through the forest, looking around for a good place to set up my territory. Eventually, after running into another Dire Wolf, I found a small open area.

It was a decently sized plot of grass without any trees in the middle, so I'd have room to sleep comfortably.

"Now, how do I claim it?" I muttered, looking at the floor.

Claim?

[You have claimed a plot of land!]

[You will be alerted if anyone enters your land!]

I blinked as the ground under me changed, glowing a faint green light in a small square. It outlined a 5-foot by 5-foot square.

[Quest Complete!]

Claim a [Territory]

Rewards:

[Territory Newbie] Title

A safe place to rest.

Nice! What does the title do?

I tapped on it.

[Territory Owner] - Those with this title can claim land in a 7x7 radius.

I watched as the land under me glowed green again, expanding outwards another 2 feet in every direction.

I walked into the middle of the square, sitting down and making myself comfortable. It still wasn't a safe place, as it would just notify me instead of actually keeping anyone out of my land, but it was better than nothing.

I had to get some sleep somehow.

I laid down, the grass feeling like a soft pillow to my exhausted body, and fell asleep soon after.

—-

[ALERT!] [Dire Wolf - Level 4] has entered your land!]

I shot up, jumping to my feet instantly as I was ripped out of my sleep. I still felt pretty tired, so I estimated that only a couple of hours has passed.

I glanced around, quickly spotting the wolves. Yes, wolves.

[Dire Wolf] - Level 4

[Dire Wolf] - Level 1

[Dire Wolf] - Level 2

[Dire Wolf] - Level 1

[Dire Wolf] - Level 4

[Dire Wolf] - Level 2

The dire wolves looked the same as usual, aside from the two-level four ones being a bit bigger. However, there was one that was glaringly different.

[Rena] [Dire Wolf Pack Leader] - Level 10

This one was a lot bigger than the other wolves - standing at around six feet tall with long legs and sharp claws. It's fur was a deeper tinge of blue.

A different type of Dire Wolf, and a named one at that. I tensed my arms, looking down at the closest one and waiting for it to strike, but it just stood there growling at me.

"You dare to try and take land from the Great Wolf King, human?!" A growl came out, sounding like a mixture of a deep-voiced female with a tinge of monster.

I blinked, looking at where the voice had come from.

"Did you just talk to me?" I asked bluntly, staring at the Dire Wolf Pack Leader. Every Dire Wolf so far had done nothing but growl, bark, and howl at me.

"Will you not answer the question, human?!" Rena growled out again, taking a step toward me, "Then you shall die! Kill him!"

Damn, not even letting me get in a word to defend myself? Whatever.

I used [Harden] on my fist as the nearest wolf, a level four one, lunged at me. I flung my fist directly into its face, sending it flying backward.

Luckily, the Dire Wolf's weren't very smart.

Two more came lunging at me, a level two and a level one, but I jumped to the side. The level two one flew past me, and I reached my arms out to catch the level one in my arms.

-1 HP! (178/179)

The wolf's claws dug into my chest, but they barely did anything now that my END was raised a lot from killing Dire Wolf's.

I leaned forward, my teeth tearing through its fur into the wolf's neck. Since my STR had increased so much over the previous day, it only took a quick bite to take down the wolf completely.
