Chapter 1 - The First Contract

Rain poured relentlessly on the Azure Cloud Wing. Kairn stood silently, cold droplets cascading off his long black coat without soaking it. His appearance didn't belong in this world, a world of palaces carved into mountain peaks and cultivation masters who could cleave waterfalls with a single sword stroke.

Before him, "Jin Yao," the young prodigy sect master, trembled. Not from the cold, but from a mixture of rage and disbelief. His sword, the "Jade Heart Blade," quivered in his hand, and the powerful golden Qi aura that once surrounded him was now faint and erratic.

"Impossible..." Jin Yao whispered, his eyes fixed on Kairn. "I defeated all my rivals and reached the Nascent Soul realm at twenty! No one in this province is on my level. Who the hell are you?!"

Kairn's cold expression remained unchanged. "You didn't defeat them. You cheated them," he said in a calm, level voice, devoid of emotion, like the sound of a stone dropping into a deep well. "You traveled back in time, didn't you? You used your knowledge of the future to avoid your mistakes, steal the treasure your opponent was supposed to find, and reach this false peak."

Jin Yao froze, his eyes widening in absolute terror. This was his greatest secret, the foundation of all his power and glory. How could this stranger know?

"You... you demon!" Jin Yao shrieked, channeling all his remaining Qi into his sword, which erupted with a blinding golden light. "I'll kill you and bury my secret with you!"

He lunged at Kairn in a desperate attack, his sword weaving a web of sharp light that would have torn any cultivator of his level to shreds.

Kairn didn't even blink. In his mind, time suddenly slowed. He saw every strand of the golden light moving incredibly slowly, as if swimming in honey. He saw the obvious gaps in the attack, the openings left by Jin Yao's desperation and anger.

With a simple, serene sidestep, Kairn evaded the entire deadly net. He passed by the stunned Jin Yao, who couldn't comprehend how he'd missed his target from such close range.

Kairn placed his cold hand on Jin Yao's forehead.

"Your borrowed time is up," he whispered.

A faint grey light, like that of a dying star, emanated from Kairn's palm. Jin Yao felt an icy coldness sweep through his consciousness. His memories of the future, of his victories, of the treasures he had stolen, began to fade and turn into mist, as if they were a dream that had never happened. His illicitly gained power began to drain from his body, and he returned to being merely that talented youth, no longer the invincible prodigy.

Jin Yao screamed in confusion and pain, then fell to his knees, his eyes vacant. He had been "reset."

At the same moment, a series of glowing messages appeared in Kairn's field of vision, visible only to him:

[Temporal Anomaly Neutralized: Jin Yao.]

[Core Paradox Corrected: "Heavenly Jade Treasure."]

[Temporal Debt Collected: 4,200 Chrono Units.]

[Reward: Enhanced Temporal Perception skill solidified.]

Kairn felt that cold, pure energy, the "Chrono Units," flow into his being, nourishing his existence and slightly alleviating his enormous debt to the System.

[Returning to Nexus...]

The scene of the wing and the rain faded, and Kairn found himself standing in an infinite expanse of grey void. This was the "Echo Chamber," his temporary nexus between worlds. Here, he could check his status and analyze his gains.

He looked at his personal interface that appeared before him. He saw his name, his rank ("Novice Collector"), and a list of his limited temporal skills. Then he saw the number he hated more than anything:

[Personal Debt: -9,876,550,000 Chrono Units.]

His cold expression remained, but an icy glint of ambition and ruthlessness shimmered in his eyes. This System had saved him, but it had also enslaved him. It had given him power, but made it merely a tool to serve it. He was just an employee, a slave, paying an eternal debt.

"One day," he thought with unwavering coldness. "I won't just collect these paltry debts. I will shatter my restraints... and I will collect the System itself."

As this thought solidified deep within his soul, a new message appeared before him, breaking the silence.

[New Contract Issued.]

[Target World Classification: Modern.]

[Objective: Correct the paradox caused by Incarnation #904.]

A hint of a sarcastic, barely visible smile touched Zein's lips. From a bloody cultivation world to a modern one? This was an interesting change.

"It seems the next mission... will require a different kind of weapon."

The grey void faded, and Zein began to feel his body reforming in a different reality, ready to hunt his next prey.
