Chapter 14: Aftermath and Awakening
The dawn light spilled softly into the training hall of Soul Academy as Joshua and Karen sat side by side, the lingering tension of the battle still heavy in the air. Joshua's usually confident demeanor was tempered by exhaustion, his gaze distant yet determined.
Karen studied him carefully. The difference between a Master Soulborne and a High Soulborne had never been so real to her. But more than that, she saw a fire in Joshua's eyes—a stubborn refusal to give up despite the odds.
"I'm sorry you had to face him alone," Karen said quietly, her fingers tightening around the hilt of her Soul-Bound Weapon.
Joshua smiled faintly, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "It's part of the path, Karen. Each battle teaches us something. Even defeat has value."
Karen nodded, then looked down at her hands, energy still humming faintly beneath her skin. "I've been practicing the Shadow Bloom domain," she said. "Marie helped me name it last night."
Joshua's eyes brightened. "Good. Naming a domain is the first step in truly mastering it. What does Shadow Bloom mean to you?"
"It's about growth in darkness," Karen explained. "A bloom that thrives even when surrounded by shadows. It's my way of fighting back."
Joshua's expression grew thoughtful. "That's a powerful image. The darkness doesn't just consume—it can also nurture. You're learning well."
Their moment was interrupted by the arrival of Dean Elandra Vale, her presence commanding yet gentle. She studied Karen with a measured gaze, then addressed Joshua.
"You've been pushing your limits, Kami," the Dean said. "I want you to focus on rebuilding your strength. Battles with High Soulborne are taxing, and Voth is not an opponent to underestimate."
Joshua nodded in acknowledgment. "I understand, Dean."
Turning to Karen, Elandra's eyes softened. "And you, Karen. Your progress is impressive, but you must remember that control and patience are just as important as power."
Karen swallowed, feeling the weight of responsibility settle on her shoulders. "I won't let you down."
Before the Dean left, she cast a glance toward the shadows lingering outside the hall. "The Veil moves in silence. Be vigilant."
As the door closed, Karen turned to Joshua. "We have a long road ahead."
Joshua stood, determination rekindled. "And we'll face it together. Your growth will be key to what's coming."
Outside, the city of Lafrosa stirred awake, unaware of the hidden war waging beneath its streets.
