“Alice is the kind of girl anyone would adore,” Chloe remarked.
“Indeed, she is. But an engagement to a duke… It is an honor, I must admit, but…” her father’s voice trailed off.
Chloe understood why he wore such a look of consternation on his face. The pressure he was feeling was unlike anything they had faced in their dealings with Count Cormier.
“Even though Alice is my daughter,” continued the Viscount, “she has always been rather wild and unpredictable. To be frank with you, Chloe, I worry about her ability to carry out the responsibilities of a duchess, given her impulsive nature. If the Duke truly loves her, there is no issue, but if that is not the case… I fear she may end up hurt.”
Were his paternal instincts sounding a warning? Chloe forced a smile to comfort her father.
“I shall speak with Alice.”
“Thank you, Chloe. She has been avoiding my gaze lately,” he responded, a note of melancholy in his voice.
