Chapter 31
“What are your thoughts, my dear?” Damien inquired, shifting the attention of every gentleman at the table to his wife.
Chloe dabbed at her lips with a napkin before bestowing a soft smile upon the room. “I confess that I am not versed in the intricacies of politics and diplomacy,” she admitted.
Presuming she had no further insights, the gentlemen began to divert their attention elsewhere. However, Chloe continued her train of thought. “Nevertheless, it is apparent that all are weary of war.”
A solemn hush fell upon the room, only to be broken by the Duke.
“Should conquering the Duchy of Carter ultimately benefit our citizens, then it stands to reason that sacrifices are necessary for the greater good.” Damien then raised his glass, a subtle nod for Chloe to proceed.
“Victory in war is never guaranteed,” she said. “While Swanton has prevailed over the Carter Duchy in the past, their military strength may not flag behind ours forever.”
