Chapter 1 - Prologue

"HAAAH... GRUH..."

Zhan made those awful sounds as he struggled to breathe, with deep wounds all over his body that were bleeding everywhere, his left arm cut off so cleanly that it was completely gone from his body. The pain was so bad that he could barely think straight, but his eyes stayed focused on just one person in front of him, and that was the God of War named Alfonze. This guy was the mastermind behind the whole war of the Grand Crusade, the one who started all this mess and caused so much death and pain to everyone. He was the whole reason why Zhan had kept training so hard for all these years, but now that the day of battle had finally come, Zhan realized he was nothing more than a toy for Alfonze to play with.

"ALFONZE. FUCK YOU..!"

Zhan charged forward without thinking, controlled by nothing but pure anger and hate, his legs pushing hard off the ground so that dust went flying up everywhere and the earth started cracking under his feet. He didn't care that he was hurt bad or that he was probably going to die, all he wanted was to hurt this guy who had caused so much pain to everyone he cared about. His body moved on its own, driven by all the rage that had been building up inside him for years and years of training and waiting for this moment.

"Zhan De VelArte. The Bell Saint. Humans truly are naive. Filthy."

Alfonze crossed his arms and shook his head like he was disappointed, not even bothering to pay attention to Zhan as he charged, keeping his eyes completely closed the whole time. He didn't have time for someone as weak as Zhan, and it was clear that he was just playing around and having fun with this whole fight. To him, this wasn't even a real battle, it was just entertainment, and Zhan was nothing more than a bug that he could squash whenever he felt like it.

*SQUISH.*

A wet, disgusting sound filled the air, and when Zhan looked down at himself, confused about what just happened, it was already way too late to do anything about it. There was a huge gaping hole right in his stomach, blood pouring out of it like a river, but he couldn't even feel the pain because he was just too tired and beaten up. His whole body felt empty and emotionless, like all the life was already starting to drain out of him even though he was still standing there.

"KAAGH!"

He coughed up blood, taking a small step back as his balance went all wrong and he started to fall over to one side. He was already so close to death that he could barely keep his eyes open, but he still decided not to give up and keep fighting no matter what happened to him. Even though his body was falling apart and he knew he was going to die, something inside him refused to quit and kept pushing him to keep going until the very end.

—Everyone... I'm sorry! I couldn't save the world, nor even avenge you guys!

Zhan started crying, his face looking so sad and broken, his eyes shut tight as the tears rolled down his cheeks. He couldn't believe that he was actually losing this fight after all those days and years of training so hard to get ready for this moment. All of that work and pain had been for nothing, and that was the truth that hurt more than any of his wounds, but he had to accept that he had been completely defeated.

"Zhan, you truly were the strongest."

Alfonze said those words like he actually respected Zhan, or at least that's what he wanted everyone to think he meant by saying it.

"FOR AN ANT OF COURSE! YOU NO MORE THAN A FUCKING ANT! YOU TRULY WERE FUN TO BREAK, I'M SATISFIED, ZHAN!"

"YOU SURE ARE BETTER THAN YOUR FIANCÉE, I HAD FUN PLAYING WITH HER! HER CUTE, TINY SCREAMS... OF DESPAIR!"

"SAME FOR YOUR MAID! I SPREAD HER WIDE UNTIL SHE BROKE!"

"HAHAHA!"

He looked up at the red sky in the middle of the wasted battlefield, laughing like a crazy person who enjoyed hurting others more than anything else in the world. His voice echoed across all the dead bodies and broken ground, showing just how much he loved causing pain and suffering to anyone who got in his way. The way he talked about the people Zhan cared about made it clear that he had done terrible things to them before killing them.

"My... Fiancée..."

As soon as Zhan heard those words, his eyes got really wide as he realized what Alfonze had done to her and what she had to go through before she died. The thought of her suffering like that filled him with nothing but pure anger that burned hotter than any fire he had ever felt. He couldn't stand the idea that she had been hurt and scared and alone when she needed him most, and he hadn't been there to protect her from this monster.

"ALFONZE! YOU FUCKING SELFISH GOD!"

There was absolutely nothing he could do to save anyone at this point, not a single person's life had been saved in the end, and Zhan was completely filled with regrets about everything. All the people he had failed to protect, all the promises he had broken, all the lives that were lost because he wasn't strong enough to stop this from happening. The weight of all that failure was crushing him from the inside, making him feel like the biggest loser in the world.

"Puny ant, die."

*CRUNCH.*

With just a single swing of his hand, Alfonze cut Zhan's head clean off from his body, and it fell down to the ground with a wet, heavy thud that echoed across the empty battlefield. Blood splattered everywhere as Zhan's body collapsed, finally giving up after fighting so hard for so long against an enemy that was way too powerful for him. His story was over, and there was nothing left of the man who had trained so hard to become a hero.

Zhan De VelArte, the Seventh Warrior, Bell Saint of the Grand Crusade, had died on this day, defeated by the very enemy he had spent his whole life trying to destroy.
