Jericho ran to me and nudged the side of my hip. Later, I have a doctor's appointment to hear the heartbeat and see it for the first time. I scratched his back, making him kneel.
I stopped, and he stood back up. He rubbed his head on my arm, then nuzzled my stomach. He could tell something was different. Five months isn't that bad.
After spending a little time with my horse, I got to work with the trailer. I quickly left for the doctor's office. "Kat Edwards." I got up out of my seat and followed the nurse back to the ultrasound room.
"Have you found out who the father is?" She asked as I sat down. "There are suspicions that it was Zach, but don't tell anyone I'm saying anything. If more gets out that I even think it was him, the entire town will know it was him then."
"Ok, how many weeks?" She asked. "About twenty-one. Maybe a little over." I told her. "Ok. Let's hear the heartbeat." She told me. I had her record the heartbeat on my phone so I could hear it at any time.
"Alright, and now for the baby." She put the gel on my belly and began. "Huh, baby does not want to be seen." She moved the wand around before finding it.
"There it is." She told me. "Would you like a picture?" She asked. "Yes, please," I told her. After the appointment, I had another scheduled for a month from now. This is going to be a long four months.
I got the picture and stuck it in my wallet. When I got home, I found several movies and watched them, taking it easy.
Someone knocked on the door, making me get up from my comfy spot. I went to the door and peeked out. Zach?
I opened the door, and he turned around. "What are you doing here?" I asked him. He sighed. "Would you mind if I stayed here tonight?" He asked.
"Word got out that even you're sure it's me that did it." Even if I told that nurse not to mention anything, the walls are so thin that other people could hear the conversation.
"Zach. Remember, we're still not sure if it was." I said, letting him come in. "I know.... I went to talk to security to see if I could watch the video from that night. It did show both of us going into the bathroom and no one else." He said, putting his arms around me.
"So that's just more evidence that it could be yours?" I asked. He kissed my forehead and nodded. "How was the appointment?" He asked. I led him into the living room and gave him my phone, which was open to the recording.
He listened to it, smiling as it continued. I went and got the picture of the baby for him to see. He set my phone down to look at it. "When do you go back?" He asked. "A month from today. December 19th." I told him.
"Will you let me know how it goes?" I nodded as he wrapped his arms around my shoulders. He kissed my temple and stood up. "I'll cook tonight." He said.
I took a shower while he cooked, and I was dressed in sweats and a long-sleeved shirt. The bump was barely showing as I pulled the shirt down.
I looked at myself in the mirror. Only from a front view, from now on, I'll look thin. From a side view, I'll look like I have a basketball or a partially deflated beach ball under my shirt.
"I think you'll look beautiful no matter how big you get," Zach said, coming up behind me and setting both of his hands under the bump.
"I bet you'd look cuter in my shirt." He added. I leaned back against him. He kissed my temple again. "Still, no matter if this is mine, I would claim it as mine." He said as he sat his head on my shoulder.
He loves the idea of having a child and family to call his own. "Come on let's eat."
We walked back into the kitchen. He already had two plates fixed. Never would I complain about his cooking. I ate it all without any comment on how good it was.
"It must be good the way your eating it." I stopped eating and smiled at him. His cooking is better than my own mom's. He can cook for me any night of the week.
Zach's POV
Finally a girl that doesn't care that I have to look up recipes for delicious food just to try and impress her. I so hope that it's mine and not some other guys baby.
When I heard the heartbeat it made me feel better about the day I had. Then she showed me the picture of it. I can't wait to meet it in person.
After we ate I got my bag from my truck and went back in. I haven't told her about all the negative remarks I'm getting when I'm in public.
My brothers and family don't want to be seen with me. It's that bad. I honestly don't care what people think about me. I know what kind of person I am and I may have done wrong in the past, but I'm not going to have an awful future.
