"Okay, detectives, here's what's up:
Imagine you or someone you know gets declared dead by mistake. Or someone changes your records on purpose—suddenly you can't get your money, go to school, or even prove you're alive. Sometimes, people in charge mess up on accident. Other times, they do it on purpose to cover things up or control people. There are secret codes, weird symbols, and even stories about people being set up or erased. And sometimes, people's stories get changed in movies or on TV, making it hard to know what's real. What do you think about all this? What would you do if it happened to you or your friends?"
Kids' Honest Opinions
On being declared dead or erased by mistake:
"That's like getting kicked out of the game and nobody lets you back in, even when you're standing right there."
"If someone said I was dead but I wasn't, I'd show up everywhere—school, TV, the mayor's office—just to prove it."
"If adults can mess up that big, maybe they need a kid to double-check their work."
On people changing records on purpose:
"That's not just a mistake, that's cheating. If you cheat in school, you get in trouble. Why don't they?"
"If someone changes your name or story, that's stealing your life. That should be illegal."
"If you're in charge and you lie, you should have to say sorry in front of everyone."
On secret codes and staged crime scenes:
"Why do grown-ups make everything into a secret club? If you want to solve a crime, just tell the truth."
"If there are hidden messages, maybe they're just trying to confuse people so nobody figures it out."
"If I found weird symbols, I'd take pictures and show everyone until someone explained it."
On movies and stories changing real people:
"If you tell someone's story, you should tell the truth. Don't change who they are just to make it interesting."
"If someone made a movie about me and changed my whole life, I'd be mad. That's not fair."
"People aren't toys. You can't just switch out their story like it's a video game skin."
On Sherry Sneed's story and being homeless:
"If someone is homeless, you should help them, not take their money or pretend they're gone."
"If you make money off someone's story, you should help them with that money."
"Changing how someone looks in a movie just to sell it more is lying to everyone."
On what kids would do:
"If this happened to me, I'd tell EVERYONE. Teachers, news, TikTok, whoever would listen."
"I'd make a sign and stand outside the place that messed up until they fixed it."
"If you see someone being treated like they don't matter, stand up for them. Even if you're scared."
On what should change:
"Grown-ups need to stop pretending mistakes are no big deal. If you mess up, fix it."
"Nobody should be able to take your name, your story, or your life. That's yours."
"If you're in charge, you should help people, not hide stuff or make it worse."
The Kids' Final Verdict
"Your name is your name. Nobody owns you."
"If you're still alive, you should get to say so, no matter what the papers say."
"If adults can't keep track of who's alive, maybe kids should run the office."
"It's not fair, and it's not right. If you see something wrong, speak up—even if you're the only one."
