Chapter 63 - Terms of Engagement

The landing zone was cleared by morning.

A false field perimeter ringed the platform—deflectors set to mimic outdated tech, hull panels patched with false welds, sensor dampers calibrated to hide power cores at half strength.

Aurex would look like a humble, backwater outpost.

But it would not be unprepared.

Mira stood at the front of the diplomatic team—cloak draped over her shoulder, boots dusted, a neutral emblem stitched over her chest. Tarn stood to her right, expression blank, one hand never far from his concealed blaster.

Toren remained behind—watching from the tower, silent.

Then the ship arrived.

The Helix Run descended in a lazy spiral, its engines whisper-quiet, its belly lights flickering like a promise of civility. The boarding ramp extended slowly.

And the envoy stepped out.

Tall. Polished. Pale gray robes over a sleek frame. No visible weapons.

His face was narrow, his eyes too calm.

"Envoy Solari," he said with a bow. "Representative of Trade Federation Outer Orbit Delegation."

Mira nodded once. "Aurex Council Representative Mira Aven. This meeting will be recorded."

"Of course," Solari said smoothly. "Transparency is the cornerstone of trust."

He walked past the first sensor pylon—hesitated half a second too long.

Mira caught it.

He was scanning them.

"You've grown something impressive here," Solari said as they led him toward the outer ring chamber. "No hyperspace beacon. No Senate files. A hidden jewel in wild space."

Mira didn't answer.

He smiled faintly.

"Forgive me—I have a weakness for mysteries."

Tarn watched his hands.

Watched his eyes.

Didn't blink.
