Chapter 5: The Letter That Never Left

POV: Naina (Unsent Letter)

Dear Aanya,

I don't know why I'm writing this.

Maybe because I don't have anyone else to talk to.

Maybe because I still wanted to believe you'd understand—

—even after you didn't.

Do you remember that night at the lodge?

The night we were supposed to share ghost stories and junk food, when everyone else fell asleep and the lights went out in the corridor?

That was the night he found me.

He wasn't supposed to be there, you know. He told the school he'd "check in on us." Said it was for safety.

He found me alone, near the stairs. Said I was "mature for my age."

I didn't know what to do when he touched me. I thought if I just stood still, maybe it would stop. Maybe it wouldn't be real.

But it didn't stop.

I told you the next day.

I told you in a whisper, my voice shaking like my hands.

You stared at me for a second. Then you said:

"You're overthinking. He's just weird, not dangerous."

So I stopped talking.

I smiled in class. I walked behind you in silence.

I watched you laugh with him, even.

And I told myself you didn't mean it.

But you didn't protect me, Aanya.

And when no one else believed me, your silence said more than their words ever could.

I'm not angry. I just want to be remembered.

Even if only in guilt.

—Naina
