Chapter 1 - Prologue

Under the bright moon, in a dark room lit only by its light streaming through an open window, sat a young woman. Her gaze drifted out the window, lost in thought, her mind is like a blank canvas.

Looking into her eyes, you may see a vacant stare of a young woman yearning only for an end to her monotonous existence; disinterest was palpable.

"Show yourself," she commanded, her voice as cold as ice.

Minutes ticked by, silence answering her. To an outsider, it might have seemed she was talking to herself, but she wasn't. A fool might assume madness, but a discerning mind would sense another presence, hidden in the room's shadows, a sudden, unwelcome intrusion.

Insulted by the intruder's silence, she closed her eyes, unleashing a potent aura that constricted the air, making breathing difficult. Even deities would struggle against this power—a hidden strength she guarded fiercely. Its discovery by those in power would undoubtedly bring unwanted attention, a relentless pursuit to either possess it or secure her allegiance.

"Take a chill pill, Raven Aether Sky Arclight. It's only me, Elarion's most handsome witch," a man quipped, materializing before her, stepping into her view to block the light coming from the window.

She glared. He raised both hands in mock surrender.

"Leave," she said, the single word sending a shiver down the man's spine. He rubbed his arms, goosebumps rising.

"Calm down, I know now how you can end your miserable and boring life," he said.

Her interest piqued, she waited for him to continue.

"Well, I read a book from my ancestors and I'm telling you, I had a hard time decoding it as it was written in strange forms. According to the book, you can't actually die as you're blessed by the God to live for eternity, but if there's someone who would take your place, then, you could."

"Take my place?" she frowned, confused.

"I mean, your body won't die, right. That's unlikely, but your soul... could be."

"How?" she was desperate, yearning for an end to her meaningless existence. Since childhood, she'd only desired eternal sleep. Nothing more, nothing less.

"Well, I could stab you with the sword of our nation's first emperor."

She looked at him dismissively. "You're aware it's heavily guarded in the palace, right?" Layer upon layer of protection surrounded the sword; no one had possessed it since. It haven't found its master yet.

The man grinned mischievously. "I can steal it. It'll only take a moment, they won't even notice, especially if I replace it with a fake one. Leave it to me."

"When do we do it?" she asked listlessly.

The man grinned. In a flash, a weapon pierced her chest. As blood flowed from her mouth, he began a spell. Her eyes widened as a black magic circle enveloped her.

With difficulty, she gasped, "Y...you, bitch," before losing consciousness. She heard his final words: "Sorry, this is the only way to kill you as you requested. It should be, you know, unexpected. Just sleep, I'll take care of everything. Goodnight, Lady Aether."

And when morning finally arrived. Aether opened her eyes, checked her body, and then slapped her face. A sharp sting confirmed her reality. The single thought pierced her mind: "I'm... alive?"
