Chapter 17 - complicated 7

My stepmother turned into something else toward me after my brother was arrested. She became so h0stile and t0xic. She blamed me for everything that had been happening in the family.

"Had it been you never stepped foot into this family, things would have been different. It's your fault! You are b@d luck!" she kept saying. And each time, it felt like she was telling the truth. She called me the illegitim@te child of the family with lots of b@d luck

It all started from Abel. That night I had left to be with him—and not even Abel was on my side now.

I tried my best to avoid my stepmother, just so I wouldn't do something I would regret later.

A day after Tony's arrest, Detective Samuel called to say he didn't get anything from Tony—except, of course, the fact that the ring was his and a very expensive one at that. But he had let his mother wear it after she gave him her blessings to marry a Kemi girl.

Stepmother! Was she involved in this?

That same day, my stepmother was taken in. I hated how my family was slowly drifting apart, but I convinced myself it was for my father. I didn't care if they ended up hating me—I had to do what needed to be done.

Her phone was searched. Calls traced. Messages—both deleted and recent—were all outgoing to one person: Mr. Danladi.

It didn't yet prove she had mu*de*ed my father, but it was clear they had been secretly in contact. Even Tony was shocked.

My stepmother refused to say anything beyond what was found on her phone—which still wasn't enough to arrest Mr. Danladi, Abel's father. That pushed me back to Abel.

I met him again, this time with another woman. It didn't even hurt anymore—that a cheat like him was cheating with his fellow cheaters.

"Are you back for me, baby?" he asked when he came into the sitting room to meet me.

"Did you know your father has been speaking with my mother?" I asked straightaway, not minding his now disgust1ng voice.

Abel paused, visibly stunned, then shrugged.

"Well, it wouldn't surprise me. My father loves any woman who can spre@d her legs."

I clenched my fists in rage.

Although I was grateful I didn't end up marrying a man like Abel, I was furious that my stepmother had made it seem like I was committing a crime just by mentioning the Danladi name—when all the while, she had been in contact with Mr. Danladi himself… and maybe even sleeping with him. And in the end, maybe che@ting on my father too.

I got nothing useful from Abel, so I returned to the station. That was when Detective Samuel told me he had found something else.

My stepmother had mostly communicated with Mr. Danladi through email. They uncovered messages about using the gateman to mu*de* my father, ki11ing the gateman afterward, and disc@rding his body.

Apparently, one of the thugs was meant to dispose of it, but they couldn't do it on time—because I returned before they could.

And the worst part?

After the job, they planned to ki11 me too… and make it look like an @ccident.

So that their son...

Tony—wasn't an Evans!!

He was a Danladi. This plan didn't even start few weeks, months, or few years ago! It started before Tony and I were even born!

To be continued…
