Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Beast, the Name, and the Rumors

My Life as a Background Extra… with Overpowered Luck

where Ash tries to name his accidental beast companion... and fails to lay low (again).

"So... are you going to name it?" Kai asked, carefully hiding behind his desk.

The Netherfang Beast,a mythical creature feared for destroying armies in ancient times, was currently sprawled on the classroom floor, snoring softly with its tongue out. Occasionally, it let out a little snork and kicked its giant fluffy leg.

I sat on the floor next to it, scratching its chin like it was a dog.

"Eh… probably should," I muttered. "Can't keep calling it 'Hey, You.'"

Kai blinked. "You summoned a legendary beast by accident. And now you're worried about names?"

I shrugged.

"I'm thinking... Toast."

Kai choked. "Toast?!"

"It was the first thing I saw this morning."

"...That's not how naming works."

I glanced at the beast. "What do you think, Toast?"

It let out a happy rumble.

"See?" I said. "He likes it."

Later that day, I stepped outside the classroom and was immediately greeted by the sound of whispers.

"There he is!""That's the guy!""The one who tamed the beast!""Did you hear? He stared Iris Velhart down and she backed off!""I heard he doesn't use spells. He just wills things to happen."

I sighed.

I just wanted to go to lunch.

Toast, now somehow shrunk down into a puppy-sized form, trotted beside me, happily wagging his tail as we walked through the courtyard.

"You're really not helping, you know," I muttered to him.

He barked.

A group of first-years shrieked with excitement. "He barked at them! That's a warning growl! He's protecting his master!"

...Seriously?

I ducked into the academy cafeteria and headed straight for the farthest, quietest table.

But, of course, someone had to sit across from me.Someone with silver hair, sharp eyes, and a ridiculous sense of drama.

Iris Velhart.

Again.

"I'm not here to fight," she said calmly.

"Good," I mumbled. "Because I'm here for curry."

She narrowed her eyes. "I've been investigating you, Ash Wynn."

"Wow," I said, spooning curry rice into my mouth. "Creepy."

"You've never trained publicly. You never participate in duels. Your records show zero achievements. Yet... you summon an extinct Myth-class creature and casually delay a duel with me."

I chewed slowly, then swallowed. "Maybe I'm just really lucky."

She leaned forward. "Luck… doesn't explain power like that."

I pointed at Toast, who was now floating upside down in the air, chasing a floating meatball. "You sure about that?"

She didn't answer. Instead, she stared at the floating meatball. So did I. I had no idea where it came from.

"…That wasn't you?" she asked.

"Nope," I said honestly. "But I'll take it."

Toast chomped the meatball mid-air and landed gracefully on the table. A group of girls across the cafeteria squealed.

"I'm gonna die of stress," I muttered.

Iris stood up. "Whether it's luck or something else, I'm watching you, Ash Wynn."

"Cool," I said. "Let me know if you find out anything. I'm still confused myself."

She stormed off. Toast burped.

I finished my curry.

Another normal day.
