The first thing he felt when he opened his eyes was the hollow weight in his chest. His body jolted upright, red eyes scanning his surroundings in an instant.
Empty.
Nothing. Where?
He tried to trace the remnants of a scent—his omega's pheromone— but all he found was void.
Zion finally came to his senses when his alpha instincts screamed at him. A searing pain split through his skull, like someone was slowly cleaving it open with an axe. Wracked by the kind of pain no human should endure, he stumbled, eyes wild, searching every corner of the room.
Nothing. The omega he had chosen was gone.
And with that unbearable agony— the sensation as if his skin was being flayed alive from within— Zion's vision darkened. He grabbed whatever his hands could reach and smashed it. He didn't even register the glass shards crunching under his feet, or the blood pouring from his fist after he slammed it into a crystal vase, tearing his skin open.
