Cherreads

Chapter 6 - [6]

Getting pulled out of my thoughts by Ellie gently shaking my forearm arm, as Mr.DNA continues this long winded presentation, "A full DNA strand contains three billion genetic codes! If we looked at screens like these once a second for eight hours a day, it'd take two years to look at the

entire strand! It's that long! And since it's so old, it's full of holes! That's where our geneticists take over!"

The scene changes to that of a sterile lab where scientists are toil in a lab with two huge white towers, that I believe are super computers on either side, or the scientist.

"These thinking machine supercomputers and gene sequencers

break down the strand in minutes, for our scientists." The image pans out and shows a scientist in the back of the room, with his arms encased in two long rubber tubes, and a harness on that has him strapped to a bizarre apparatus, while he stares into a like

complex headpiece, he's moving his arms but it's so gently, the camera hardly registers the movements.

"The machine this scientist is strapped into is called a Virtual Reality display and it shows our geneticists the gaps in the DNA sequence! Since most animal DNA is

ninety percent identical to that of the dinosaurs, we use the complete DNA of a frog…" the scene changes to an actual DNA strand, except it has a big hole in the center, where the vital information would be but it is obviously missing." Mr. DNA bounds into the frame, carrying a butch of letters in one hand. He puts it in the gap and turns back against it, and while using his back to try and fit the new DNA into the gap he grunts with effort, "...to fill in the…holes and…complete…the…code, Whew, finally!" Mr.DNA let's out a breath as

He brushes his hands off, with a satisfied smile on his face, he turns to us, "Now we can make a baby dinosaur!" He cheers in happiness.

Dad, Ellie and Malcolm all share looks even Dad looks at me funny, not sure what to make of my "hypothesis" being correct.

Hammond takes this moment to speak up, "All this is supposed to have some dramatic music, something along the lines of da dum da dum da dum dum, or something like that it's not written yet, but for now the tour must go on!" Hammond says brightfully as he walks up the aisle, sits down behind is and throws some kind of hidden switch, which makes the safety bars, like on a roller coaster appear out of nowhere and drop over our seats, the safety bars click into place.

"Please don't panic, these safety bars are for your own safety!" Hammond offers no further explanation, as the rows of seats start to move to the right, the screen begins to disappear as the seats slowly oscillate and stop in front of a row of double-panned glass windows, at the very top and just behind the windows there is a large sign that reads,

[GENETICS/FERTILIZATION/HATCHERY] below us inside of a laboratory, we can see laboratory technicians working at microscopes,

while one section is entirely lit by blue ultraviolet light.

Mr. DNA voice comes from speakers built into our safety bars.

"Our fertilization department is where the dinosaur DNA is injected into that of an unfertilized emu or ostrich egg…and overwrites the original genetic code, then it's on to the nursery, where we welcome the dinosaurs back into the world!"

'Wait what now, there was a big skip in explanation just now, did the movie have that?' I wonder and look behind me with the intention of asking John if the presentation skipped something, I see Gennaro has a wonder filled grin plastered on his face, just absolutely loving everything now.

"This is overwhelming, John. Are these characters animatronics?"

'No you dipshit they're people…holy fuck and I thought I was stupid...I mean I am…but still…'

Hammond makes a disgruntled expression at that question, "No, we don't have any animatronics here at Jurassic Park, these are the real miracle workers of Jurassic Park."

Dad, Ellie, and Malcolm make sounds of contempt and frustration as they lean forward, and strain against the safety bars trying to get out of their seats so that they can get a better look.

But they aren't strong enough and the seats start turning again.

"Wait a minute, How do you interrupt cellular mitosis?!" Dad asks and grunts as he tries to fight free of the restraining device.

"Can we see the unfertilized host eggs?!" Ellie asks as well but the turning platform the seats are bolted to are already moving on to another set of windows, which give a glimpse into what looks like a control room.

"Shortly, shortly…"

"Our control room contains some of the most sophisticated automation ever attempted in…" Mr.DNA's voice starts up again

Dad strains to look back into the labs, but the platform is moving along without a care for what he wants.

"Can't you stop these things?!" Dad asks with an annoyed exasperation only parents can typically muster.

"No, sorry! It's kind of a ride!"

Dad looks to me and then to Malcolm, "Let's get outta here!" I smirk and push the safety bars away easily, making the ride stop, while the two men are still struggling to try and push them as a team, reaching over to both. I give them a little assist. Dad kicks his all the way back with one foot for good measure and Malcolm does the same.

"Thanks for helping your father, Alec." Ellie leans over and whispers to me as both men huff like they just lifted up the world.

"It didn't take much, but…probably shouldn't say anything and wouldn't want to damage their ego's." I snicker back to Ellie making her giggle.

The four of us stand up and head for the door of the hatchery.

"Hey! You can't do that!" Gennaro shouts but it's too late, "Can they do that?" Gennaro asks as we reach the door to the hatchery, Dad tries to shove it open, like it would just swing inwards but he ends up slamming into it.

"Dad, it has a door handle, with a key card reader, it doesn't just swing open." I groan in embarrassment for the man as Malcolm and Ellie laugh.

Dad ignores me and rattles the handle anyways, but of course the door doesn't budge.

Looking behind me because I hear footsteps approaching from behind it's Hammond followed by Gennaro, Hammond steps up to the door after Ellie moves dad out of the way, John takes off his glasses.

"John, this-" Gennaro starts to liberally protest giving us access to the laboratory.

"Relax, Donald, relax. They're scientists, I'd be worried if they weren't curious." Hammond says as he types a code, into a box he opens on the wall that makes a portion of the metal door frame open up.

'A retinal scanner.' Hammond scans his right eye, a loud magnetic buzz and a mechanical click come from the door, Hammond then grabs the door handle, turns it downwards, opens the door and steps aside, allowing our eager group to go down into the laboratory.

The hatchery/nursery is a vast, open room, bathed in infrared light, long tables run the length of the place, all covered with eggs, their pale outlines obscured by a hanging plastic shield.

"Don't wait on my account, go on then, have a look around." Hammond says as he takes off his hat and hands it to one of the technicians.

'Huh, Henry Wu.' I think as I look at the late twenties, Asian-American, genetics wearing a white lab coat working at a nearby table, taking notes, looks up and smiles.

'You kinda forget watching the sequels that Henry Wu wasn't always a scum bag.'

"Hello Mr.Hammond." Wu greets John fondly.

"Good day, Henry." John returns the greeting.

Dad walks up to the circular table that Wu is standing beside, that has various eggs underneath a strong heat lamp light, 'Oo, bout to see a baby raptor break it's way onto this world…I'm so fucking psyched out this is awesome!' I express as one of the eggs starts to move, and a robotic arm moves in and steadies the egg.

"Dad, look, it's about to hatch!" I point out and take center stage, "My God!" Hammond, Ellie, Dad and Malcolm join me.

Henry Wu, looks up from his clipboard, and speaks, "Ah, perfect timing! I'd hoped they'd hatch before I had to go to the boat."

I notice a girl around my age she looks a bit like Chloe Grace Moretz, 'Is that Charlotte? If it is, she's a total babe.' I think as Hammond taps my arm smiles at me while handing me a pair of nitrile gloves to put on.

"Henry, why didn't you tell me? you know I insist on being here when they're born." Hammond says, almost sounding offended.

The egg begins to crack open, and the robotic arm moves away.... 'Its not coming out like in the movie.' I start to worry as the baby raptor seems to weak to get out on its own so as a crack appears I reach into the man made nest and give just a little bit of assistance, and just that little bit of help has it sticking it's cute little head out of its shell.

I feel myself blinking away tears, it's just such a beautiful moment to be a part of, 'Don't sorry little one, Papa won't abandon you when it's time to leave the island.' I express while I begin to carefully break away egg fragments, helping the baby dinosaur fully out of its shell.

"Come on, Little One, come on." I hear myself murmuring, chanting the little girl on, only having eyes for the baby raptor, I don't notice how everyone is staring at me.

I feel a tug at my abdomen and an interface appears in the back of my mind, a willing domination bond has been initiated, as I run my index finger over Little One's head [Dominate] [Refuse Domination], 'I shouldn't bind this new born to my will but it says willing domination bond.

I accept it and Little One's golden reptilian eyes lock with my blue eyes, there's an instant connection.

"They imprint on the first living creature they come in contact with, luckily for us that helps them to trust us. I've been present for the birth of every animal on this Island." John murmurs like a proud grandfather as his hand lightly pats my back.

I can feel that since my ability was used on a life form willing to be dominated by me, that I can use it again on another life form.

"Alec, you can't keep her. It was bad enough when you saved that tiger cub and kept it as a pet when we were on the dig in Nepal."

"Don't bring up Sarah not after you made me leave her there to be killed by poachers." I say but my words sound more like a growl.

"You've surely not been there for the ones that have bred in the wild?" Malcolm butts in, "Actually, they can't breed in the wild, population

control is one of our security precautions here. There is no unauthorized breeding in Jurassic Park.

I don't need to see to know that dad and Ellie are exchanging looks, and I can tell that Ellie is just barely managing not to smile.

"How do you know they can't breed?!" Malcolm asks with a cocky arrogance in his voice.

"Because all the animals in Jurassic Park are female…I-we've engineered them to be that way." Hammond keeps his attention trained on me and the new dinosaur, I'm assisting out if it's shell.

"There you go, Little One, you're almost out now, come on just a little bit more." I murmur and Ellie whisper shouts, "Oh my God."

With Little One now free, I carefully cup my hands and pick her up, bringing her to my chest just over my heart, Dad of course is seemingly more interested in its shell.

"Precious things should be kept close to the heart." I repeat words I haven't heard in at least a decade or longer, before returning Little One to underneath the heat lamp, and willing my desire for it to be healthy, I feel warmth course through my body into my hands and out into Little One, before I set her down in the soft grass of the nest.
