Chapter 40 - Memories (2)

Everyone was basically situated in their beds for the night so all that remains is for me to close my eyes and sleep. At least everyone seems to be getting along alright.

Artemis lays down in his bed, Amelia next to him like usual since she prefers the comfort of it all more than anything.

I don't know how much harder the path ahead will be but I'm willing to travel through it either way. I'll work harder to become even stronger with these shadows— Even if it's something that I have to sacrifice something for.

I'm going to keep them safe and I'm going to stop those bastards from bringing back the goddess of death.

He dozes off with those remaining thoughts as everything slowly begins to change around him, the estate forming once more as he looks to see his mom right besides him. (7 Years ago.)

She puts a book down on the table and opens it up. "Swords are important but so is education Art. You need to know about the world if you want to move forward in it, at least that's what would be best." Mom says with a smile across her face.

Mom was the one who taught me as much as she did about the world, it makes sense since dad wasn't much for books. Mom taught him a lot about the way the world is too.

She begins to teach him about the world through the book before them. "Our world was a lot different before people discovered that they could use magic. Magic flows within most of the population but not everyone can use the same types of magic." Mom explains.

This was when mom first taught me all about magic and the different types of magic that she knew about. It truly was a lot of educational times with her above all else.

I couldn't complain about it since it was a good way to get a break from all the practicing with my sword.

His mother has short black hair, blue eyes, and even with her tattered clothes she still gives off this feeling of nobility. This was the first time Artemis was truly remembering how his mother looked.

I know I looked at them when everything happened at the estate but I never truly looked at them. Some part of me must've blocked it out for the emotional side of things.

I can't say that it's surprising since I've not really dealt with the memories of everything that have happened. I just keep moving forward with the thoughts of revenge while all my other memories of them are happy.

"Artemis are you listening?" Mom asks while staring directly at him.

He lifts his head up to meet her gaze. "Yes mom, I'm listening." He responds before looking back towards the book.

Distant clashing could be heard as some of the other slaves fought off some of the monsters, that was the daily occurrence around these lands.

They'd typically have to fight off some goblins, undead skeletons, and even potential bandits once in awhile. It was always different based on the day and the time.

Creek. A door opens up and Artemis's father walks in, covered in blood from the battle they just finished. "Teaching our bit more about the world huh? Haha." He chuckles before wiping off some of the blood.

Dad was usually pretty carefree when it came to us and it was always a nice change of pace with him around. He'd only be serious when it came to training me with the sword or if the monsters were too excessive some days.

"Of course, he should know all about it. We never know if he'll get the chance to experience the world so he'll need to be prepared." Mom speaks up with a bit of joy in her voice.

Technically they shouldn't of had me in a situation like this but the Rose family is a lot kinder than the other families. They actually cared about the slaves more than most and gave a lot of leniency.

Something that you wouldn't expect from a family who owns us, at least I never would've expected it.

The rest of the day he continues to learn about magic, the different cities, towns, and even some of the kingdoms. It was definitely quite the hefty learning day for Artemis.

But these memories are what helped shape him to be the person he is today, even if revenge isn't something they'd ever want him to accomplish. They weren't violent people, nor did they ever want their son to experience such a thing.

Everything begins to disappear as someone shakes Artemis awake. "Hey, can we talk?" A soft voice can be heard next to him.

I didn't expect to be randomly woken up by someone in the middle of the night but these things do happen.

He rubs his eyes and looks to see who it is, it was Liora. "Liora, what's going on?" He asks quietly.

She just gestures for him to follow her as she begins to head to the other room. Artemis doesn't hesitate and just gets up to follow her quickly. He made sure not to wake anyone up as he left the bed.

"Okay, so what's going on Liora?" Artemis asks quietly once more.

She takes a second as she figures out how to explain it. "I do have an idea of where to go next and who to handle, but I don't know if any of us are strong enough." She responds with a bit of fear in her voice.

Sigh. She woke me up in the middle of the night to tell me about this when it could've waited until the morning? I guess that's something.

Artemis lets out a small yawn as he goes to speak. "Then where would we go instead for the meantime or who would we go after instead?" Artemis asks with a bit of a tired tone in his voice.

"Helfri." Liora answers.
