The private dining area at Brooks Resort felt more like an interrogation room than a restaurant. Adrian's question about Julian hung in the air between us, heavy and threatening. I needed to be careful here.
"There's nothing to discuss about Julian," I said, focusing on twirling pasta around my fork. "I was just surprised to see him there."
Adrian's eyes remained fixed on me, analyzing every micro-expression. "You seemed more than surprised. You seemed afraid."
I set my fork down, meeting his gaze directly. "Mr. Valois—Adrian—I appreciate the job opportunity, but my personal history isn't relevant to my ability to teach your son."
"I disagree," he countered smoothly. "Anything that might affect Leo's environment concerns me."
"I assure you, it won't be an issue," I said firmly, picking up my water glass to hide the slight tremor in my hands.
Adrian studied me for a long moment, then nodded once. "Very well. For now."
